I find this thread mildly disgusting. The game the OP and his friend played is irrational and destructive and I cannot comprehend why they would play it. Thumbs down.
As far as I know kory there's no transcriptions of the casts available. You can read the show notes and follow the links in the text of the article which will give you the gist of what was discussed, but you'll miss out on the commentary and wisecracks.
wow tom still listening to the cast but i have to comment immediately and say you are the heart and soul of monday night magic, you're consistently amusing and informative and I'm amazed by you hosting week after week without any payment or reward aside from the adulation of the comment threads. If the comments aren't being complimentary I can see how that would get you down, but I hope you know that the majority of listeners like hearing you on the cast
On the cast so far - Jack, I totally agree with you about monocolour, I'm getting sick of the RGUUBWW casting costs. I hope Alara Reborn will be the last hurrah of this trend for the time being and the next block will take us back towards monocolour - all they'll have to do is to let reflecting pool, filters, lorwyn tribe duals etc rotate out and not replace them. not every block has to have multi-lands! Also this is the second cast I've heard you on Jack and you're much improved, I'm really glad to hear it!
edit: in response to the all natural deck enhancement; hahahahahahahaha
decided to go for a block deck this time, using Master Transmuter. If I was to stretch it to standard I'd also put in Thousand-Year Elixir to complement Master Transmuter, but since every other card I'd want is in SoA I figure it can be substituted with other things, like Filigree Sages.
The main synergies are between the transmuter and Tidehollow Sculler, as you can stack the comes into play and leaves play triggers and the bounce cost to remove the card from their hand forever. Sanctum Gargoyle has a great 187 ability that I'd like to reuse, and Magister Sphinx is the big fatty I'd like to put out for free. Resetting him every turn can also keep me alive indefinitely against an opponent who can't do more than 10 a turn.
All this bouncing and replaying can really beef up a Glaze Fiend, especially when I untap Master Transmuter with Tezzeret. Sigil of Distinction can be played for 2 counters early and bounced later to recharge, or it can be played for free just to have something to bounce.
Great show guys! I vote for a longer show. But the idea of themes for certain weeks of the month I also like (maybe just for a tiny segment in the show, because right now I like all the segments). Perhaps one week could be tribal week, one would could be spike week where Gavin talks about the meta in the current tourney format, then one week could be limited week, ect. I also miss the combo of the week :-P.
since i'm in a combo-y mood (who am i kidding, I'm always in a combo-y mood) here are some conflux combos to sate your johnny appetite! I will leave their explanation as an exercise for the reader
Sigil of the Empty Throne Auratog Brilliant Halo
Your huge Auratog might shrink at the end of turn, but your army of 4/4 fliers is there to stay!
Mark of Asylum Aether Flash
Your opponent's small guys die when they hit play, while yours survive.
Wall of Reverence Merfolk Thaumaturgist
Makes Wall of Reverence worthwhile targeting itself
Kederekt Parasite Forced Fruition
They are really pushing one drops in the last few sets, this card reminds me of Disciple of the Vault which is a bit of a worry!
Welcome back and congratulations Gavin! I like the shows at around an hour long, its enough time to fit in all the content but doesn't feel like it drags. Welcome also to Eric, who was a bit quiet but a good addition to the podcast when he had something to say Tom, are you trialling replacements for Derek?
I'll be back with a deck if I remember before next week. Thanks for the cast guys, it makes the slow hours at work pass so much faster.
Sorry guys, I'm 14 minutes through and I'm not going to continue because the whispering is creepy and grating. You sound like a smart guy Jack and the things you say are fine, but the way you say them is really off-putting! Hope to hear you again, without the whispering
Rather than do the deck challenge this week, I'd like to relate a story from a casual 3 player game I played with my friends last night. One friend was playing his Kelpie control deck, and the other was playing his Magus of the Vineyard-Feral Hydra-Wurmcalling deck. He played out 2 Magi on turns 1 and 2, which I was quite pleased about as it meant I could play Wild Pair on my turn 3
The next turn I played Minion Reflector and turn 5 I started going off. I had an essence warden in play and a couple of mana elves, and I played another warden, fetching a 3rd with Wild Pair, and copied both of them with Minion Reflector. I then played 2 Elvish Visionarys from my hand, fetched up 2 Deranged Hermits and copied both the hermits for a total of 22 new creatures with FIVEEssence Wardens in play!! Both my opponents promptly scooped as neither of them had any board sweepers and I had just gained over 100 life, and a friend at the next table on hearing the story commented "i wasn't even in that game and i scooped." Good times
aw man, i had this fantastic combo all planned out and was about to post it until i realised you don't get the creature back until end of turn
Thanks for the cast guys, and thanks for the spoilers! I love spoiler season, all the guesswork and puzzling things out, and picking what cards will be big hits and what won't. That bant birds of paradise with exalted sounds fantastic, especially if it's not a rare. Obelisk of Alara on the other hand sounds terrible, 8 mana for a bad bonded fetch? or for Flame Jet?
I have a couple of questions for the next cast if you don't mind:
1) Do you guys ever speculate on singles preorders, on the expectation that they'll rise in price? This worked out well for me on Bitterblossom, as I got my playset for less than the price of 1 now.
2) (I can't remember if this has been asked before, but) What do you guys think about the surfeit of colour fixing around at the moment? Personally I think it's pretty ridiculous and I hope that live long and prosper bring back 1 and 2 colour decks - people should have to think hard about whether they can go to two or three colours, not just throw Rhox War Monk in the same deck as Cruel Ultimatum!
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to Tom, Gavin and all my fellow listeners
Aggro/Control game plan, use your grave pact and sac effects to control the board and discard effects to strip their hand, then accelerate into an Ebon Praetor or Desecration Elemental or resurrect them with Soul Exchange, and then feed them Thrulls until they win you the game. Alternatively, make a whole bunch of thrulls and pump them with Thrull Champion until they win you the game. Saccing thrulls at appropriate junctures should let you keep Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder around as well to make more valued subordinates (aka. Praetor fodder).
Thanks a lot for the cast guys, sounds like you had a fantastic time in Memphis when should we expect to hear interviews, you've got a fantastic selection of magic personalities to listen to! Also, is monday night magic taking a break for christmas? have a great holiday season either way tom and gavin
drop some nasty threats that come with drawbacks that don't matter because their creatures can't attack into your caltrops and minefields. the repercussion idea is great (thanks!) because even attacking with the goblins gets damage through.
this is the best deck i think i'll even netdeck it for my next multiplayer game, if those old rares aren't too expensive!
I would like to hear Gavin sing, in the style of an AC/DC tribute band:
'Cos it's M T G
It's Monday Night
M T G
We'll Unmake your Hellkite
etcetera, etcetera.
As for a Cauldron of Souls deck, I've just figured out an overly complicated combo: Cauldron of Souls, Goblin Bombardment, Oona's Blackguard and a Pestermite! Give the pestermite persist with the cauldron, sac it to the bombardment, it will persist back and get a +1/+1 counter from the blackguard leaving it in minty fresh condition ready for another sacrifice. Unless of course I don't understand the rules correctly and it'll die before it gets the +1/+1 counter? Who cares about the rules when you have a 4 card combo in 3 colours!
Bonus: Carnival of Souls combo, because everyone loves those! carnival and Deathgreeter in play, along with 2 Nether Traitors and a sac outlet, we'll use Nantuko Husk this time. sac one traitor to the husk, gain a life. sac the other traitor and pay a black to get the first traitor back, which costs you a life and gives you another black mana. repeat ad infinitum and swing with a supermassive nantuko husk!
No mention of my email? My heart is broken D: Please get back to me guys!
okay, finally finished the cast. top show guys, one question though - will derek ever return? i think jack from north carolina spends more time on monday night magic than our elusive 3rd co-host! Thanks for persevering with this week's show despite the technical trouble, I enjoyed it a lot
I'd definitely invest in some black tie sleeves! The only place to get sleeves around here is the overpriced hobby shop in the middle of the city, which is a pain to get to. And no matter how bad the deck I'm sleeving up, I'll know I'll always be that bit classier than my unwashed opponent.
I've got a couple of questions for next week's show, but I think I'll send them via email. I'm looking forward to the Worlds show
i notice mike turian is listed as one of the developers on the new set, Zendikar. I hope you'll be asking him plenty of questions about it!

So often at multiplayer tables I'll see a massive Witch sitting across the board from a Chameleon Colossus, with this janky 3 card combo who needs Rite of Consumption?
