I am marveling at how incredibly dense everyone posting in this thread is. You talk about how brainstorm was so vital to vintage, how it enabled so many things. That is exactly why it got banned. If one nonland card is being an auto-include in the majority of decks, that is a symptom that it's overpowered. The only exception I see to this is FoW, which serves to directly counteract combos.
Brainstorm deserved banning because it was so incredibly popular. If someone were using, say, ravager in 3/4 of decks, it deserves banning. Why not the same with brainstorm?

Yep. The Island Fish had "Island" in its typeline, and polluted delta allows the fetching of Islands. It was erratad to just be a fish, but apparently this was pre-errata.
