Miracle trigger on the stack? Aurelia's Fury targetting you... seems like decent Bonfire/Terminus protection, which added to the many other uses of this card, is pretty powerful.

Yes, once declared as an attacker or blocker, that creature is still an attacker or blocked until after the entire combat phase has ended. So they are still an "attacker" or "blocker" during the End of Combat Step.

So, as long as your Lady Caleria is going to survive the Combat Damage step, you can use her ability in the End of Combat step just fine.

For all the complaining about the set's name... at least it injects a bit of mystery and speculation about where things are headed.
Compare that to "New Phyrexia" and "Avacyn Restored", which basically gave the story away in just the name... At least this set's name isn't "Izzet Wins!"

Search the City is awkward, but at it's core it's a delayed "Draw 5 cards and take an extra turn"...
There's gotta be something you can do with that, right?

Just curious, is FTV printed in english only? Or in other languages as well?
It would be difficult to tell the name difference if (as an english speaker), my opponent had japanese forests and a japanese FTV Dryad Arbor.
The P/T is easily covered up by stacking lands, but the name is the one thing that's hard to hide.

  • posted a message on Chandra the firebrand against multiple planeswalkers
The only way to deal non-combat damage to an opponent's planeswalker is to target the PLAYER with a damage-dealing ability, and then redirect that damage to a planeswalker. You're never technically targeting the planeswalker directly.

So, for Chandra's ability, you have to choose your opponent as the target, and redirect the damage to only ONE planeswalker he controls.

Any prediction on how these two seemingly-disjointed stories will intersect next week?

My guess is that the prisoner that Relov was bribed to release was the Gorgon (maybe Ludmilla?).
I don't think that this isn't the first time Relov has been bribed by the Orzhov. He didn't question for one second what that pink number meant, and seemed 100% confident that the money would be deposited if he did what was requested... So, maybe Relov is also the one who ordered the Mass Arrest (at the behest of the Orzhov), which led to the circumstances that allowed for the prison riot which let Ludmilla escape.
Perhaps this is some grand-scale Orzhov scheme in which they have some use for Ludmilla, or just earning the Orzhov a MASSIVE favor from the Golgari.

So many possibilities, this is why I love Ravnica! Smile

    Quote from nukeman8000
I don't know if this is exactly right.
The OP stated that he was in the middle of searching for his Image when his opponent responded. So that means that his opponent already had allowed the Pod activation to resolve, which makes it too late to respond.

Maybe you missed the part of the OP where he said:

I use pod, sacrificing the bird. And I stupidly rush the game forward and say "fetching a phantasmal image" and begin digging for one.

I think it's pretty well implied that he didn't wait for his opponent to respond before skipping ahead and resolving Pod's effect.
If you rush forward and don't give your opponent a chance to respond between activating an ability and resolving it, your opponent has every right to back you up to the point where the ability is still on the stack.

It doesn't matter how many sources are dealing the damage, and it doesn't matter how many instances of damage are being dealt to it. If all the damage the creature receives is simultaneous then the ability triggers just once.

Well that's just simply not true.
If purebred is blocked by two 2/2 creatures, when combat damage is dealt he'll trigger TWICE. Just because damage is simultaneous, doesn't mean that its all one instance of damage.

    Quote from pierrebai
I'll bite. First, I don't know what set you're playing, but getting back 4 tix off (on average) 3 rares is hard to believe. Non-chase rares sell for something like 0.005 - 0.01 tix each. You'd need to pull something like a Sigarda, Host of Herons or better in every draft.

Two, I don't know why everyone focuses on drafting. I used to swiss draft, but now I'm exclusively on 4-packs sealed instead. If you're swiss-drafting, I'd urge you to consider that option. The advantages are:

    1. You still always play all 3 rounds.

    2. 3-0 is 5 packs, 2-1 is 3 packs. Both of these are better-than-swiss-draft. 1-2 pays 1 and 0-3 nothing, which is par with swiss.

    3. No tix necessary to enter. Only 4 packs. That really helps going nearly infinite.

    4. Opening 4 packs means one more chances at getting a valuable rare.

The main downside is that decks are more diversely powered. Some will get the nut pool. On the other hand, The nuts is less good that the equivalent in a draft. You can 3-0 with what may seem like an average pool. I did yesterday where my only bomb was (the arguably very good when going long) cathars' crusade. Never despair, the less color-focused nature means that a lot of people go three color, so you can get wins against superior deck due to mana fixing problems.

There's no question that 4-pack sealed is the best value for limited queues available on MTGO. However, the maindrawback I see in it is that it's not very good practice for any format played in real life. So while you may be able to go infinite with 4-pack sealed (where mill strategies are overpoweredly good, etc.)... Good luck making that work for you in an IRL booster draft.

i did not read all the way trough the topic, so sorry if i am repeating stuff..

    On the batterskull incident:
If it proceeded the way the OP described, mr Black was wrong. Wat i read was (in order) :
    Stoneblade guy returns BS.
Stoneblade guy activates SFM, putting BS in play
Stoneblade guy plays STP on skuller
Stoneblade guy puts token on BS, wants to block

This is a legal chain of events. The plow could have been cast in response to the BS etb trigger, which he chooses to let resolve later on. It was not explicitly stated that he did, but it also wasn't stated that he didn't...

I'm pretty sure under tournament rules, if you want to maintain priority after adding something to the stack, you have to explicitly state something to that effect. So, if you intend to respond to the Living Weapon trigger with StP, you'd have to say "In response to the trigger" or "retaining priority after the trigger goes on the stack". If you don't say something to that or a similar effect, you're assumed to be doing the second thing after the first one resolves.

This would be relevant if Batterskull were a lapsing trigger, but it is not. It's been pointed out earlier in this thread that Batterskull isn't a lapsing trigger, so as long as it's caught within a turn, a judge would resolve the trigger even if it was missed at the original time.

Having the guilds rebuild onscreen would just make us suffer through another Scars of Mirrodin. I'd rather we skip directly to New Phyrexia for the next block.

Agreed. How big of a success would Mirrodin 2.0 block have been if things started at New Phyrexia (or even Mirrodin Beseiged) and had a full extra set to tell the story of the Praetors' factions struggling for dominance (which many people seemed to enjoy far more than the war leading up to it).

Do we really need a set that says "welcome back to Ravnica, in case you missed it the first time, here's an update on how the guilds are doing. Maybe there will be some conflict later, stay tuned 3 months from now!"

Does anyone have any strategies or colors that have proven strong for cube? any color that isn't as good as the others or is strong?

White weenie is very powerful, especially with Armageddon (there's also the Portal-set Armageddon). Just make sure you draft sufficient ways to "push through damage" once your opponent starts playing things bigger than yours (i.e. solid white removal, or splash a removal color).

Pack 1, take dual lands over mediocre middle-picks, even if the dual is only in one of your colors... You might find yourself having use for a splash later, and having access to that dual is really helpful.

W/G mid-range can be very good if you prioritize the good "incidental life-gain" cards like Kitchen Finks, Heirarch, Baloth, Faith's Fetters, etc.... I had a breeze against aggro decks with that.

If you are feeling adventurous, keep your eye out for a Reanimator deck. There's LOTS of tools for such a deck, and it's easily the most powerful if you can pull it off. If you do, be sure to hate-draft the graveyard hate, you don't want someone wrecking you with a 14th pick Tormod's Crypt.

    Just some ideas, good luck!

  • posted a message on Switcheroo and gaining Hexproof
If I play Switcheroo targeting my "Creature A" and my opponent's "Creature B", and in response my opponent gives his creature Hexproof, does Switcheroo do anything upon resolution?

    The rules say:
608.2b If the spell or ability specifies targets, it checks whether the targets are still legal ... The spell or ability is countered if all its targets, for every instance of the word "target," are now illegal. If the spell or ability is not countered, it will resolve normally. However, if any of its targets are illegal, the part of the spell or ability's effect for which it is an illegal target can't perform any actions on that target or make that target perform any actions. The effect may still determine information about illegal targets, though, and other parts of the effect for which those targets are not illegal may still affect them.

Since there is still at least 1 legal target, Switcheroo is going to resolve as much as possible. However, I'm not sure what "as much as possible" is in this situation... Will it succeed in giving my creature to my opponent and fail to give his creature to me? Or just fail/succeed altogether?
I seem to remember some weird ruling about targets that are made illegal but still on the battlefield still being able to give information for the resolution of a spell/ability, but not entirely sure...

    Any help would be appreciated!

Please use card tags in future posts. The Forum Guidelines explain how to do that. -Carsten

No. Flashback costs are paid with the original casting cost of the card. This applies to all alternate cost cards, like Daze or Foil.

This is correct, but kinda misleading.
The reason that you can't use an alternate cost like Force of Will's or Daze's is because Flashback IS an alternate cost. And, when casting a spell, you can only choose one alternate cost to use.

It just so happens that with Snapcaster Mage, the Flashback cost is equal to the original Mana Cost of the spell. Note, however, that cost REDUCTIONS can still work with Flashback.
    The simplified process is:
    1) Choose the cost of the spell (either the original Mana Cost or an alternate cost)
    2) Apply reductions/increases (like from Blasphemous Act or Thalia, Guardian of Thraben)
    3) Pay the cost.
