Do you have a playgroup in mind? Is there a store you plan on going to? Do you know anything about their meta or playstyles? Do you have any ideas on how you want to build your first deck or what you want to focus on to start with?

I was planning on going to a store called Comic Quest but my mom doesn't like the area. I don't know anything about the local meta, and I honestly have no idea what kind of deck I want to build. I'd rather not spend too much into a deck as of right now because I don't know if I'll like the playstyle.

I've heard that Commander is a casual format, so if that is true, I'd probably be interested in it, as a new player.

What is Commander all about? And how frequently do decks rotate out?

Casual oriented? So is Friday Night Magic considered "Hardcore"?

I want to get into Standard play at FNM.

The thing is, I'd rather not buy into an established deck, because I may not like the style of play it offers or could get bored of it quickly. I know getting a Deck Builder's Toolkit isn't as powerful as buying singles but could a deck built from it stand a fair chance?

Just checking, I've seen some newbies thought they could play FNM with their pre-release decks with 20 extra cards. The guy got mad that he did horribly because he went 2-2 with the deck but went 0-5 at FNM and didn't understand why.

Sure you can put together a random deck out of 6 packs (more if you win rounds at pre-release), but I wouldn't say using the deck is the way to test the player level. It's best to ask around including the store employees before diving into an FNM if you're that worried.

Actually what city/state/country do you live in? Someone here is bound to be close to you and know the stores pretty well and can tell you where to go.

I understand, I know you're just helping the new guy. Honestly, I wouldn't ask the store employees as they likely wouldn't know (or care) about the local meta. I could just show up without a deck and watch everyone, but I don't think the store employees would appreciate that.

And by using the prerelease deck I didn't mean using it as a way of "testing" the player level. Basically I just plan on bringing it as an excuse to see what types of decks people are playing. I think I have a pretty good idea of what a proper high level deck with good synergy will look like.

I'd second trying some drafts or prerelease out first. There's nothing wrong with brewing your own deck, but you'll get more experience in that department by playing limited first. Additionally, you're never going to need to drop $100 to build a draft deck, only $15+ for entry.

    Besides, welcome to the site!

Honestly, everyone, I think going to prerelease is in fact the best strategy. Not only will I get play experience and a deck for $15+, but I can bring that deck to all the local game stores just to see how competitive/casual each one is. You know, test the waters.

Thanks for the warm welcome, Omnom! Love the signature, by the way

FYI do not bring that deck you build for pre-release to FNM. For one, the deck you build from your packs for pre-release is 40 cards. Second, it's still very inconsistent and different from if you built a normal 60 card deck for Standard, even if it is a homebrew. A casual deck will still beat a limited deck a majority of the time.

That's right, I'll need to add 20 cards to it. But who cares if I lose with it at FNM? The point of using it is to test out the local meta and see how casual or competitive everyone is, and then use that information to actually build a decent deck.

I wasn't going to use my prerelease deck permanently. Even as a newbie, I'm not that silly :p

Yeah! I was actually planning on going to the prerelease to build up my collection and get some gameplay experience. It's good to know that FNM has some casual players, too.

If I had sufficient deck building skills with a few cards from booster packs, would I have a good chance at FNM? I don't care so much about losing, as long as it helps me fine tune my homebrew. I know a lot of people just buy singles but I'd like to experiment with different playstyles.

I've been poking around these forums for a bit, and one thing I noticed is that everyone here treats FNM like its a super competitive tournament. This worries me. Will I have to buy $200 worth of singles just to build a half decent deck? I'm just starting out, I don't want to invest too much at first. And I don't want to play with seasoned pros who'll get annoyed with a newbie like me.

I checked the link, and it seems very scary for FNM. A tightly-knit deck like this isn't something you'd usually find played at your local game store, is it? Also I'd like to spend $100 dollars or less initially.

I am a new player who only owns a welcome pack (Basically I have some forests and mountains and some commons). My mom is worried about me getting into the game because of the costs. Can someone recommend cheap ways to craft a good deck for standard at Friday Night Magic?

Keep in mind most decks at FNM will easily beat an "intro" pack from Walmart but probably won't be as strong as competitive standard decks. At least, based on my research. I also don't really care how much time it takes to build up a decent deck.

My strategy is to go to prerelease and build a deck there, but that's just a starting point.

Yeah, making a pauper cube sounds like a good idea. Use it to get your friends into Magic, and since the cards are commons you don't have to worry about them being unsleeved.

I'm not really sure. Will releasing large sets affect how fast cards rotate out of standard?

Is draft the same as league? A lot of stores have leagues where you pay for some boosters and make a deck that you can play over and over with others in the league.

And both Draft and Sealed fall under the "Limited" category, right?
