Just bought the deck but instead of 4 tarns I went with 2 tarns and 2 delta's due to budget issues. So my mana base is now: 3 Strands, 3 Islands, 1 Mountain, 2 Tarns, 2 Deltas, 4 Canals and 3 Vents for a total of 18 lands. I figured that having only one basic mountain, subbing 2 tarns with 2 deltas wouldn't hurt much. What do you guys think?
I'm about to buy into the deck and currently deciding my list. My question is about the mana base, each deck I see seems to use different lands. Is there any consensus on a standard mana base? And why it differs so much from one list to another?
So I've narrowed down to two decks and I need help picking one: UR Storm and UW Control.
While I love the control playstyle, UW feels too passive sometimes and heavily match-up dependant. UR Storm, on the other hand can combo off pretty soon but gets hated on by so many cards and I'm not sure yet how to deal with that.
I plan on getting the deck for LGS play, where I'll play against stuff like: E-Tron, Elves, Affinity, Merfolk, GDS.
The list I'm looking at (and most lists currently) runs 2 Gideon of the Trials and 1 Jura, plus the 4 colonnades and the Elspeth on the sideboard. Playtesting with a friend who plays E-Tron, I've been struggling a bit to keep things controlled long enough to be able to beat him down, since etron has lots of heavy threats and Ulamog which even when countered, it removes 2 permanents from me. Overall I love the playstyle and I'm pretty sure I still have a lot to learn on how to pilot it, so I'll probably build UW Control.
After some time off of MTG I'm about to buy into Modern and I'm looking for suggestions on which deck to play.
I like decks with fewer creatures and tons of spells, basically Control and some Midrange decks.
The ones I'm currently considering are UW Control, U-Tron and maybe UR Storm.
My concerns regarding each one: From my testing with UW Control I've been struggling on closing the game, sometimes I stabilize but the amount of space I give my opponent is often times enough for him to come back. (I guess I'm playing it wrong, since there's so many clutch decisions each turn)
UR Storm: I enjoy the way the combo wins out the game, but it seems a bit uninteractive and thus not as much fun to play.
U-Tron: I like the concept and the way it plays, but the deck is a bit off meta (Which doesn't indicate much since I only plan to play at LGS level).
Any help choosing one of these or suggestions of other decks I haven't thought about is appreciated.

I'm about to invest in my first deck for Modern, and I've been considering UW Control. I read somewhere that control decks usually don`t last much in Modern as the metagame shifts constantly and the deck comes up to put other decks in check every once in a while. My concern is whether the deck will last for long. I plan on taking it to FNM's, so of course I don't need the best deck in the format, I just want to be sure my investiment will last.
My other options are UTron and UR Gifts Storm.
Thanks!
In modern you cannot rely on a single deck to be 'good' for an extended period of time - regardless of whether you choose control or any other archetype (due to meta fluctuations which is a symptom of bannings, unbannings or new printings). To reliably be on a competitive deck in modern you need to own at least two decks - as it is very likely over the course of 12-24 months that one of your decks is going to be poorly positioned for some period of time. UW control is one such deck that has this profile - it did relatively well during the eldrazi winter and is doing well again now - largely due to its good matchups with the formats biggest decks (DS and E-Tron).
I completely understand that. But even when the deck is struggling is it still viable for LGS play?

Just bought into the deck and would enjoy to read a report.
Thanks!

Still looking for input here, please.
