I think this mechanic is obviously super abusable, but also, it should be worded so that it counts nonland mana. Ideally it would be a time'travel mechanic a la:
Freeplay X (If you cast this for X, return the game state to how it was prior to casting this, then put this onto the stack.)

kjsharp posted a message on [Monthly Card Contest] ***MCC*** Discussion ThreadI really like this design but I couldn't get it to fit the challenge. 3 key words was just too much, as concentrating the power there prevented me from making the power and toughness big enough to pull off the design. So I'll just share it here. I really like how this might open up room for fight spells weaker than Dromoka's Command to see play in Standard. Plus he's mighty cute...and giraffasaurs apparently were a real thing ("giraffatitans").Posted in: Custom Card Contests and Games -

I'm not sure of anywhere official you can go for this, but I wrote up the thing below a few months ago, and I'm pretty sure it's accurate.Quote from Sub_Silentio »IcariiFA, is there a guide anywhere as to how one ought to order evergreen keywords? I'd hate to see people lose points on quality if the template isn't standardized. I'm sorry if this was already discussed/posted elsewhere, I just couldn't find anything via Google.
Quote from Flatline »Thanks for the reply The_Hittite. The thread you are linking is the first time I've actually seen someone try to list all of the evergreen abilities in the correct order, which is actually quite surprising. I've attempted to update that list to modern times. There is no way that I know of to compile a list that is certain to be 100% accurate though, so this list is the best I could do....
Flash
Defender, flying, first strike, double strike, menace, vigilance, reach, deathtouch, trample, lifelink, hexproof, indestructible, haste, protection from <name>
?Prowess?
Here's a synopsis of how I arrived at the list I did....
- The cards Akroma, Angel of Wrath and Chromanticore give a good baseline to start with. They show us the following order: Flying, first strike, vigilance, trample, lifelink, haste, protection from <name>.
That leaves us with the following keywords to figure out: defender, prowess, double strike, menace, reach, deathtouch, hexproof, and indestructible. Here's how I placed each of them...
Defender - Fog Bank shows us defender comes before flying. Simple.
Double strike - Kalemne, Disciple of Iroas shows us that double strike comes before vigilance. Drogskol Reaver shows us it comes after flying. It's not possible to say for sure which comes first, first strike or double strike, but I think it makes sense that first strike would come first.
Menace - Kari Zev, Skyship Raider shows us that menace comes after first strike, and Dire Fleet Ravager shows us that it comes before deathtouch, so it could fall anywhere in between those two abilities. I think it would come before vigilance and reach because it has to do with how the creature can be blocked, which seems to be given a lot of weight if flying is taken as an example.I'm actually surprised it doesn't come between flying and first strike, like the ability (intimidate) it replaced did.I'm not sure the crossed out sentence is true. All that can be said for sure is, intimidate came somewhere between flying and trample, as can be seen on Withengar Unbound.
Reach - Ramunap Hydra shows us reach comes after vigilance. Deadly Recluse shows us that it comes before deathtouch. I think Deadly Recluse can be trusted because both abilities have their reminder text.
Deathtouch - Deadly Recluse shows that deathtouch comes after reach. Gifted Aetherborn shows us that it comes before lifelink. It is impossible to say whether deathtouch comes before or after trample, but I think deathtouch coming before trample would make more sense for a card that had both (which has never been printed).
Hexproof - Ormendahl, Profane Prince shows us that indestructible comes after lifelink. Insidious Mist shows us that hexproof comes before indestructible.
Indestructible - Insidious Mist shows us that indestructible comes after hexproof. Hazoret the Fervent shows us that it comes before haste.
Prowess - This one is impossible to say because Wizards has yet to print a card with prowess that doesn't include the reminder text (as least not that I could find).I put it where I did because I felt like it.Which is why I list it separately from everything else.
I did this as quickly as I could, so please excuse an errors or omissions. I hope my reasoning for the list makes sense. If there is anything glaringly wrong with the list, or my reasoning behind it, please feel free to respond. It would be cool to make this list as accurate as possible.
Edit: I changed the list so that prowess was listed separately from everything else. I don't want to give anybody using the list for reference to get the wrong idea. I'm also unsure about my placement of menace, although I'm all but certain it comes between first strike and deathtouch. I'm pretty confidant about the rest of it. -

Sometimes? Maybe. This time? Saying my planeswalkers second ability didn't work with his other two was objectively false. That was not an opinion. Now, if he had started by saying "having to have two or more creatures die to stack your library is too much effort" or something to that effect, then sure, that would of been a reasonable evaluation of the card since we are all just mentally playtesting here. But that wasn't what was said in the initial critique.Quote from CaseAce »
Agreed, except your definition of mistake sometimes feels like "didn't agree in lockstep with my opinion on the matter".
Yup. As often noted on these forums I'm harsh. I'm the early American Idol season's Simon Cowell. I'm the Snape to the potions class. While I don't disagree that being nicer would probably make people more receptive, it doesn't make my points wrong either. Also agreed, but your tone is so often unfriendly that it can be hard to hear the good advice through the bad attitude. Which may just be to our detriment, but I've always enjoyed the adage "you catch more flies with honey than vinegar".
I don't think the sarcasm was needed.*sigh* I know it is dude, but that wasn't the point and I think you know that. You are an excellent designer, but everyone has room to improve, and the way you come across sometimes seems that you think you're above improvement.
If anything I think people misinterpret my harshness. It's not because I think I'm above improvement. It's because I want more people to improve, and I'm tired of the kiddy gloves.
Before this year my participation in these contest was more sporadic, and while I won occasionally I did't feel people held my opinion as highly as others just because I participated less. This year I wanted to make a point: If I consistently entered and put in some level of effort into these contest, I could consistently win. That I knew what I'm talking about. That's not to say I think everything I design is perfect or even good, but now that I've gotten this far into the year, that I feel I've proven that I'm one of the front runners here, my opinion are still easily dismissed even when I'm not expressing an opinion but objective fact. Particularly by newer folks. It's frustrating.
So when I point out that there was an error in a critique and it's ignored? That bothers me. While I have plenty to learn and there are certainly other points of view I respect hearing and touch on things I miss, maybe the lesson here is this; while I certainly could learn to be nicer, there is a pretty good chance I know what I'm talking about and it shouldn't be so casually dismissed. It's not like I call out every post that doesn't list my card in their top 3. Just ones that I see that say something that shows they objectively miss-evaluated that card in some way. -

Thanks, everyone. I didn't even think this was my strongest CCL run in a while; it kind of gives me confidence that I can win in a month where I thought I was having an "off" time, haha. I did design Unified Drive though, which I was crazy proud of. -

void_nothing posted a message on Essence of the HourglassPosted in: Custom Card CreationQuote from Sub_Silentio »Quote from void_nothing »Time shenanigans 100% are in red's pie, it's just outright creature destruction that isn't. This should be tricolor if you're going that way with it.
Do you think this fits best as a Grixis design? I mean we've seen blue have destruction with stuff like Pongify and red having it in Obliterate. I'll grant these are rare cases, but Grixis strikes me as way more evil than something like this. Perhaps it'd need a total flavor overhaul then.
Essentially stealing your time in this world away, flavorfully, sort of a la the Weeping Angels, is extremely evil. Red does mass destruction like that occasionally but only destroys creatures when it's destroying basically everything else (Apocalypse, Worldfire, more recently Star of Extinction), and Pongify is "transmogrify" rather than "destroy" in terms of function - it's a pseudo-Polymorph, which blue does do. This does not replace/change the creature and it is not on a mass scale. Needs black, period. -

It should say "If you do, that creature gains vanishing." in place of "Creatures your opponents control with time counters on them gain vanishing." - To post a comment, please login or register a new account.

Sorry again, just in the spirit of competition, I want to ensure everyone has as maximally equal of a chance as one another to avoid common mistakes.

Set on a world where gladiatorial combat determines the social order, people are born into a life where they live, breathe, and eat battle - competing in daily competitions for everything from food to plain glory. There is no internal logic to this world. The strong survive. The weak fall. It's a simple world, but a brutal one nonetheless. There are no Gods here. There are only the sounds of steel on steel, screams, and cheers.
You may ask yourself, what kind of a being would find themselves here - never-mind declare themselves Emperor? How truly sick of an individual they must be.
Planeswalker - Tibalt (M)
+1: Shuffle your library, then reveal the top card of your library and put that card into your hand. You lose life equal to its converted mana cost.
-2: Deal 1 damage to target creature. It gets +2/+0 and has haste until end of turn.
-8: Target opponent gets an emblem with “Whenever you cast a spell, take damage equal to that spell’s converted mana cost.”
[3]
Of course you probably saw that coming. What you will not see coming is the individual who Tibalt is using as both his champion and favorite target for torment.
Planeswalker - Garruk (M)
Whenever a creature dies, put a loyalty counter on Garruk, Gladiator Champion.
-2: Target creature gets -2/-2 until end of turn. If it dies this turn, create a 2/2 green and black Wolf creature token.
-X: Garruk, Gladiator Champion becomes an X/X Human Barbarian creature that’s still a planeswalker. It fights each creature target opponent controls.
[4]
I can't promise this set uses a lot of new design space, but I like to think there are a few cool things here. I mostly centered the set to have emphasis on Exalted(WUb):
Malignia, the Lone Blade 4WB
Legendary Creature - Human Knight
First strike
Exalted
Whenever a creature your opponent controls attacks, if it was not attacking alone, that creature gets -X/-X where X is the number of attacking creatures that player controls.
3/3
Morbid:
Legendary Creature - Elf Shaman (M)
When Soulstitcher Glina enters the battlefield, search your library for up to three creature cards and exile them. Then shuffle your library.
Morbid — 1GU, T, Return a creature card from exile to your graveyard: Create a token that’s a copy of it. Activate this ability only if a creature died this turn.
1/4
And Bloodthirst, though I don't have any particularly cool multicolored mythics to show that mechanic off. But let me assure you that this is a very combat-centric set, with a ton of equipments, and a lot of reasons to rush into battle and get some creatures in your graveyard:
Legendary Creature - Human Barbarian (M)
Haste, menace
Whenever Artilius, the Battle-Mad deals combat damage to an opponent, put the top card of your library into your graveyard. If a creature card is put into your graveyard this way, untap this creature and after this phase, there is an additional combat phase followed by an additional main phase.
3/2
Other, sub-mechanics will include Equipments, and a Morbid variant that is unnamed, which triggers abilities only if you've lost life this turn. But, finally, for my UR friends I don't want you to feel left out from the enemy color legendary brigade. For you, I did something a little different.
Legendary Creature - Djinn Wizard (M)
Flash
Prowess
When Stormcaller Shinzan enters the battlefield, create a 0/1 red and blue Elemental creature token with prowess for each noncreature spell you own on the stack.
1/2
Anyway, I know this is getting long, and is kind of a lot of information. I'd love any suggestions or comments below - maybe some things you'd like to see from these legends, and possibly stuff regarding my mechanic choices or even any cool reprints that you think should make the cut! This was only an hour's worth of journaling at work today, so things are pretty rough. Hope you enjoyed!

All games have winners and losers - there is almost a level of divine elegance to it, where those who are most skilled or lucky are advantaged. While those who cannot overcome the tricky hands of fate or who cannot master their trade are penalized accordingly. It sort of reflects life in an oddly beautiful sort of way.
I digress - because there is also a third type of person playing your games - and it’s unfortunate because so long as there is a reward or a prize, there too will be cheaters. They can be the ruthless shark who is willing to do literally anything to win, the child just learning to play who augments natural talent with slight of hand, or even the gamemaster who is driven to desperation to hang onto their title in a world they are being quickly forgotten. Magic has had its fair share of rogues and cheats - and now it’s your turn. For you see, even your talented champions from Round 2 have a few tricks up their sleeves.
PLEASE NOTE: that the choices you make in the first two rounds will softly determine some of your design stipulations if you advance to the Top 8 and beyond. This will not be a hard constraint, but should keep your challenges focused on the task at hand.
PLEASE NOTE: This month we will continue with the mandatory Top 3 rule. Your card will receive NO POINTS in any round you fail to submit a Top 3 by the judging deadline. Submitting critiques will still be optional (but encouraged!), and will be worth 2 bonus points per round on its own.
