So Runo was in Wizards after all… which we anticipated but did not get. Why didn't he make it? Why do I get the sick feeling that he ended up being Kess. Think about it. She's a Grixis Wizard with flying. Take her exact card and make her Vampire Wizard instead, and she'd be Runo Stormkirk. With the flashback effect not only reminiscent of Innistrad, but emphasizing Runo's Blue side, and the concept of depths as recurring spells (Pull From the Deep).

How sad we got a nobody instead.

Yeah, Kess was probably Runo at some point in the design process.

Of course, if that's the case, I hope that his actual card (if he ever gets it) won't be inferior to Kess.

What I like about this article is that it shows a planeswalker actively plane-hopping.

The stories these days typically show planeswalkers on a particular plane for a lengthy period of time before moving on to another one.

Also, I guess Tarkir is on the map now for planeswalkers, since both this guy and Vraska have been there.

So it looks like the guy from this sets curse cycle is in fact the unluckiest planeswalker, maybe we'll see more of him in the Unset?
    http://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/feature/cursed-commander-2017-edition-art-descriptions-2017-08-22

Yeah, it is however seen that the instructions were not quite respected... the black curse is really not set in Grixis, as the city is not derelict. They could sell it as Fiora if they wanted. In the same vein, the green curse looks not like Tarkir, but Innistrad.

While they goofed a bit with the visual, the whole tragic story about Grixis is that it used to be like Bant before it became overrun by the forces of evil, so if you really stretched it, this is the most well-preserved remnant of that in the shard.

As for Tarkir, he's probably camping out in Qal Sisma.

I guess The Unluckiest Planeswalker is the adventurous type, since there are far better places to explore on Alara than Grixis, and Tarkir is just dangerous overall for outsiders.

So what ever happened to the "storyline" of Nissa staying on Amonkhet and helping the people recover after Bolas's destruction of Naktamun? Was/is that even a thing? I only read Hour of Devastation lately and skipped some stories before that, maybe it came up somewhere. It certainly seems to be implied on cards like Beneath the Sands or Sidewinder Naga.

It was also in the art book IIRC, but I'm not entirely sure what to think about that at this point, especially since Nissa's tone shortly before she abandoned ship implied that she gave up on Amonkhet.

They're also kind of redundant. Artifact creatures already existed. Even temporary artifact creatures already existed. They added nothing, except another "let's turn card type X into creatures" mechanic. It's more lazy design along the lines of the 20 or so kicker variants we've seen the past 5 years or so.

One speculation I had about what Vehicles were going to be was a reverse Equipment. In other words, the creatures are equipped to the artifacts instead of the opposite, and the artifacts then do whatever as long as they're equipped with the creature. Being artifact creatures as long as they're crewed makes sense to me at the very least, since vehicles move and are basically extensions of their drivers.

Also we've had vehicle cards in the past, but they didn't "behave" like vehicles.

Well, different people can have different opinions. I personally got bad memories about Vehicles so I don't like the concept at all.
At least, they may be semi-evergreen just as Curses. And yes, I hope to see less broken Vehicles in the future.

You don't think people had bad memories about Equipment too?

Equipment also started out busted in Mirrodin, because they wanted to push it as a new concept, just like they wanted to push Vehicles in Kaladesh. Also outside of Copter and Heart of Kiran, how many Vehicles actually proved to be problematic?

You probably know how many players dropped Magic after Mirrodin (I guess Affinity was the main reason but still).

I think Mirrodin is a lesson on how not to do an artifact block, which despite the hiccups, I think they've somewhat learned since Kaladesh wasn't nearly as color pie-breaking. Aetherworks Marvel, Smuggler's Copter and Heart of Kiran were pretty impactful cards in Standard nonetheless, and Paradox Engine is mostly busted in Commander. The Cat combo didn't involve any non-token artifacts, which I guess was different.

Ixalan isn't an artifact block anyway, so we don't have to worry about the inherent dangers of that kind of thing.

All I'm saying is that I don't think Vehicles will bring down the game if they become evergreen or deciduous.

If it were up to me, I'd honestly have the Western theme also be on Ixalan (but at a different time), but not everyone would like that.

Does commander have any anniversaries coming up? I could see a set of reimagined Elder Dragons as the face cards for a set; give them more of a mechanical identity and revisit magics history.

I could see them being used to supplement story-wise whatever is in standard, for example, 4 Ixalan legends from a past era with some connection to the world we see in standard (previous captains of named ships, young versions of current captains, rulers of now ruined kingdoms etc.)

I like the idea of using Commander sets to showcase specific historical figures on various planes outside of Dominaria. Some examples:

Alara: Asha, Cylia, Crucius, whoever was responsible for ripping the plane into five pieces
Old Phyrexia: The planeswalker who built the place
Kamigawa: Choryu, All-Consuming Oni of Chaos, The Sisters of Flesh and Spirit
Ravnica: The Guild founders that didn't get cards, especially Azor I
    Shandalar: Kenan Sahrmal
Amonkhet: The three corrupted Gods in their original forms
Theros: The R/G god before Xenagod, Agnomakhos
Innistrad: Marycz, Shilgengar, the 4th Powerpuff Angel, maybe the last known Innistrad elf

...and so on and so forth

    1.) Do Dragons reproduce sexually?
2.) The Elder Dragons are said to be the progenitors of dragons across the multiverse.
3.) This isn't a question, so why call it that?

I'm not supporting the theory btw, but I am pointing out why your three questions need work.

    1. Broodmate Dragon and Dragon Egg imply yes.
    2. Maybe so, but why would Bolas deliberately create offspring that could one day rise to challenge him? Unless you're telling me he spontaneously creates dragons the way our skin sheds in flakes. I can see him bioengineering a dragon army to serve him, but after his close encounter with Ugin on Tarkir, maybe there's a reason Bolas is sticking with an army of stone Zombies for now.
    3. This one's a joke. You know, like when someone says "I got two words for you" and they say a word with two syllables?

1.) I guess I should have said "Elder Dragons" instead of just "Dragons" in that one, since that's what I really want to know, but Broodmate Dragon does lend support to that idea. Apparently drakes and wurms (wurms being descended from Elders who had their wings ripped off) are also descendants of Elder Dragons, which paints a pretty weird and somewhat messed-up evolutionary tree. That also calls into question why the Ur-Dragon doesn't beat in the hearts of drakes and wurms too.

2.) We may never know either way. I think it's likely that Bolas has given rise to offspring himself, but whether or not any of that offspring is still alive if they exist is another question.

    3.) I see.

Right, so in summary: flying laser battleships yes, electrical super scientists yes, genetic engineering yes, basically the Borg from Star Trek yes, guns no. Smile

In fairness, I can understand that aesthetic choice, even if I don't really agree with it.

MTG is already blurring the line between magic fantasy and science fiction as-is, especially with artifact themes.

I don't mind guns being in the game personally, but I can kinda understand why they don't want to cross that particular line.

    My version:

    Licia, Sanguine Tribune WBR
    Legendary Creature - Vampire Soldier

Pay 1 life, Licia, Sanguine Tribune gains your choice of Vigilance, First Strike, or Deathtouch until end of turn.

Tap. Licia, Sanguine Tribune deals X damage to target creature or player, where X is the amount of life you gained this turn.

    3/3

Why get rid of the lifelink? Is it to avoid her fueling her own 2nd ability?

Other than that, this seems interesting. I think we should have had a Boros commander like this long ago.

Are Homunculus actually living creatures that reproduce or are they more like Thrulls(created lifeforms)?

I don't know about Ravnican homunculi, but the ones on Alara (Esper) and Innistrad are definitely artificial.

    Three questions:

    1. With who?
    2. Why?
    3. No.

Bolas and Niv simply both happen to be megalomaniacal dragons with a lot of resources at their disposal, Bolas moreso than Niv.

posted a message on Ixalan and Rivals of Ixalan
XLN is already being printed, there's no doubt about that. Rivals, however, may not have already been printed, but it's almost surely been finalized and no changes to the cards can be made.

Perhaps this makes a difference going into Dominaria, but I highly doubt it. Changes to the story have a far greater impact on the cards themselves than minor changes like number changes (eg mana cost, P/T, etc.) where story changes may have changes to the art, which are done well in advance of finalizing the set, and could change the overall flavor of the card, which could mean entirely reworking the card. This seems like a pure gimmick a la Mirrodin Pure.

However, speaking of Mirrodin Pure, I hope if we ever go back to Mirrodin, that we get Mirrodin Pure in some way. That would be pretty awesome imo.

IIRC, everyone in the story, including the guy who created the place, has written Mirrodin off as lost. The corruption is too deep to save it, short of "resetting" it to factory zero or something.
