I buy a play set of Commons and uncommon and play sets of the staple rares/mythics. I make no effort to get bulk rares unless I have a specific build for them.
I think it should be banned for Arena singleton. It forces you to play Rat Colony or build a deck that beats Rat Colony. Results are you have 60% of people playing Rats. Makes the event boring and why I never play this format on Arena.
I think Arena is a better value. Packs are cheaper, can easily get 3-4 free packs a day if not more. Also get free singles daily too. I spent $50 and have built two competitive decks that gave me almost out of platinum.
I think I got something like 6 free decks just competing the missions and most of them are actually fun to play and can win games early on.
Pros:
1- i’m busy with work & family so can't make it to FNM every week but if u have an hour I can fire up Arena for a few games.
2- Cost is less for me.
Cons
1-No trading/dusting can result in taking a long time or a lot of money to grind a deck compared to other digital card games.
2- No interact with other players. However, a large portion of MTG players are toxic so this is maybe a pro depending on you MTzg community.
3- No tournament play. Ladder is cool, events are cool but I miss actual tournament play.
4- potential for Wizards to pull the plug and you lose every dime you spent.
Thanks for the suggestions. I have some of the cards suggested already so I'll try them out first. Krosan Drover and the Goreclaw are definitely on my want list now.
I find myself seriously outgunned most of the time. We have a commander league at the FLGS so it's kinda on the competitive side. I generally run budget decks in commander like Xenagos, God of Revels or Shu Yun, the Silent Tempest and Narset, Enlightened Master. Just seems like in 3-4 player games I never win and rarely even eliminate players. I mostly get locked out by prison decks or combo decks go off.
Are there are any budget decks that can combat these two issues?
I screw up things for a long time when playing a new deck. It's 100 cards, one copy of each. It may take 20 games to see all the cards once. So, I don't have the text memorized yet and sometimes I forget what a card does because I haven't seen it in a month.
I think overall it's very good for the early stages. Doesn't too buggy. The visuals are very good, particularly the animations. Gameplay is fast. There are a lot of things that need fine tuning like deckbuilding, matchmaking, and holding events/tournaments. But I think these are all things they are working on. I like it better than MTGO. MTGO is more like paper magic which is cool in a way but I play at my store for the paper experience. Arena feels more like a digital fast play version like Hearthstone. I'm a dad that has time once a week at best to play paper magic but with arena, I could eventually play a few games on break at work or while sitting on my couch. That's a plus.
Yup you will get masterpiece versions of Ral, Telefari and Vraska. So well worth it. I still have four keys if anyone wants one. Only have two days I believe to use them.
I've used Channel Fireball, Card Kingdom, TCG Player and randoms on eBay. Haven't had any issue with any of the first three, just have to shop each one for the card you are looking for to see which has it at the best price. No one store has the best price on every card.
