Got housed vs the newest version of UW Control this weekend. I had a great hand 1st game and then was shut down by Supreme Verdict. Game 2 got housed as he played stony silence out of the gate and I got mana screwed and had to mull to 5. Just curious what the best way to combat this matchup is for us as it seems to be more and more popular right now. Thanks!

    Hey Guys,

After not playing MTG for the last few years I was going through some cards to sell. During the process I found a half way built Affinity deck. After selling a few cards I decided to trade a bunch in to some shops to complete the deck, which is for Modern. I have finally completed the deck and and still have some credit left over and was looking for some help with what to do next.

I have about $420 left over in credit and was going to buy some staples that would be easy to move in the future or possibly allow me to have a start on another Modern deck. My original plan was this...

    Tarmogoyf x3
    Verdant Catacombs x3
    Thoughtseize x2

After looking at some top 8 deck lists I realize I can put together Scapeshift for about the same that I can buy those 8 cards for. Instead of using Windswept Heath x3 like many I'd still buy the Verdant Catacombs x3 as I don't believe it matters for this deck, but the possibility of using the VC in the future in a different deck is greater for me than the WH.

Anyway, was just looking for some thoughts. If you have an idea that would be better than either of these let me know. I'm just searching with what to do with the remaining credit right now. No, I won't spend it on you!!! Wink

    Thanks
    Mike

Goyfs are currently around the $90 range in card shops. I know the floor usually hits around 5-6 weeks after the set release. Do you guys expect these to go down a bit or is it time to buy now? I have enough trade credit at 2 shops and am trying to determine when to pull the trigger on a play set.

Really? Because the hands without mox opal feel awful, Affinity is awful if it goes with the traditional drop 1 on turn one, drop two on turn 2, etc. One of the reasons I sold my Opals is because I worry about the prices tanking. Mox opal does not feel like a good spec

Affinity is just a bunch of synergetic cards glued together, the cards themselves are awful

Are Mox Opal's being used in any other format other than Modern?

    Hey JuzamJace,
If you are buying Mox Opal and Arcbound Ravager masterpiece cards then yes they are likely to hold value. They cards are so rare that the price will stay high even if the cards are reprinted with regular pictures. If you want to have decks in the future to play with I'd just buy play sets of cards you can use for different modern decks. $800 can probably buy four modern decks or more depending on the deck. If you want to speculate on Jace, the Mind Sculptor now would be a good time if you can get him for $60 or less. His price will probably go back up $100 just because he is the most notorious card. I don't think wizards is going to unban anything else from modern for years. I'm basing jace and stoneforge demand off of commander. If you want to speculate on stoneforge you can but I wouldn't, it's very likely to see future reprints.

Thanks for the input! I don't really care about. Holding more decks cause I don't play anymore. It's figured I'd build the Affinity deck to have something. I think I'm going to stick to my original plan and buy those cards in masterpiece collection and buy up Jace's with the leftover. I've been lucky with JtmS so far.

    Hey Guys,

I stopped playing MTG for the 2nd time a few years ago and was recently going through some old binders and boxes pulling out some leftover stuff of value to sell and I came across an old Affinity deck I started to construct. I sold some stuff, but I've decided to trade in a bunch of stuff to Troll & Toad & Card Kingdom to finish the deck. My son right now is into Pokemon so I thought maybe he'll eventually get into Magic and I'd had a Modern deck to mess around with. I've always been into pimping out decks and was wondering what everyone's thought's on the new Masterpiece Inventions set is? Do you think it's going to hold value? More particularly Mox Opal & Arcbound Ravager. I have about $800 in credit between the 2 store and am trying to decide how "pimp" to make the deck. Or do you think I'm better off just buying the cheaper versions of the cards and investing it somewhere else? Maybe a few JtmS, Stoneforge, etc and hope they get unbanned. Anyway, would love to hear your thoughts!

    Thanks
    Mike

I've just smashed a Grixis Shadow opponent right now, two easy games ended in turn 4 and 3 respectively.
Anyway, I'm back now at home, I've played my Monday Magic night at my LGS and finished 2-2. Won against Cheeri0s and Abzan, lost against Jund and RUG Scapeshift.
Did some changement to the list, going 4x Steel Overseer and 1x Spire of Industry instead of 1x Galvanic Blast and 1x Glimmervoid

    G1 vs Cheeri0s 2-1
G1 I just rolled my eyes when I've seen Sram, but I've unexpectedly managed to win thanks to a fast and wide army, pumped with Steel Overseer. He used to draw, draw and did nothing, probably didn't find the Retract
G2, Cheeri0s did Cheeri0s, winning on turn3 and I didn't find any removal at all.
G3, mulligan'd to 6 because of an ALL colored cards hand, I've kept a two lander, Galvanic Blast and Whipflare plus two creatures hand. I scried for a Plating, I didn't remember what the two other cards were but Plating was enough to kill him, alongside my two removals, allowing him to do nothing at all.

    G2 vs Jund 0-2
G1, got smashed with the obvious Turn1 IoK for my Champion, then he just played Goyf, plus removals for days.
G2, same start but for a Master, the rest went the same way as G1.

    G3 vs Abzan 2-1
G1, the exactly same start of G1 Jund (Blooming Marsh, Inquisition of Kozilek, take your Etched Champion). He won thanks to multiple Lingering Souls and Decays. Nothing I could do.
G2, I won thanks to a wide army, a Plating and a final attack, keeping BB for instaequipping my Plating to an Ornithopter, dodging his Path for my Skirge.
G3, T2 Stony Silence and he got some removals, but I managed to grind him out with Master of Etherium, Vault Skirge, multiple Nexuses and a later Champion joining the party and attacking each turn, while the rest of the board was stalled by Goyfs, 4 Souls (I had Two skirges and 2 Ornithopters), Hierarch and Flayer. Then I drew another Champion in the final stage of the game, and it was an overkill.

    G4 vs Scapeshift 1-2
    G1, t4 kill with a Plating.
He won G2 and G3 in the same way. Prismatic Omen plus Scapeshift on 6 lands, tempoing me out.

Overall a quite solid night, although I keep finding my BGx and URx matchups nearly impossible to win, since half or more of their deck is great against me. I was considering a pair of Hangarback Walkers to fight them, since the card is great, but cutting cards in Affinity is extremely hard to do...
Also, I've ran Stubborn Denial in the SB just because I'm waiting for my second Ghirapur Æther Grid.

The meta in my LGS is too damn hostile anyway. 85% is grindy, with Grixis variants, Jund, Abzan, Company and Shadow everywhere. Two guys play that stupid Lantern deck, and two play Tron variants. A couple plays Scapeshift, and the rest (very few) plays Dredge, 8Rack, Burn or Taxes decks. I think I'll hold on playing Affinity there, and I'll sleeve my Scapeshift deck instead, although that's not even nearly as fun as Affinity, but I really can't go on a suicide Modern session everytime Frown

I run the exact same main deck with the exception of I swap out the 3rd Etched Champion for a 2nd MoE. I run 2 more of the Etched and 2 more of the MoE in the sideboard. Run 4 MoE in mirror and colorless eldrazi and 4 Etched Champions vs the rest.

I don't particularly like MoE in my meta for the reasons I've said.
Also, I am almost never happy to see Blasts in my hand and I often side them out, and I much Prefer Thoughtcast. Maybe that is a flex spot for two Hangarback Walkers...

What are your thoughts on Glint-Nest Crane? I've seen people running 4 lately, but maybe just 2 in place of the Blasts.

It's true that blue is bad, but the format as a whole looks good, and full of diversity. Oh, well. I was very for the preordain/SFM unban, but after reading Todd Stevens article I had a feeling there'd be no unbans.

Blue is so bad that 27% of the decks on MTGGoldfish are running a basic Island. Rolleyes

I guess people just like to trot out horrible decks.

Affinity runs a single island...hardly a blue deck.

I, like many of you have always been fond of playing blue control decks. Many of us that started way back, for me it was Revised, tend to gravitate toward blue. With that being said I don't blame WotC for not making any changes. The fact is Modern is thriving, so why change anything? Blue is currently so bad that 1 unban isn't going to turn it around. My guess is they are fine with how the format is currently playing and nothing will change in April either.

    Hey Guys,

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this, but I didn't know where else to. I am posting my trade list and was curious how you get the "foil" symbol to show next to the cards?

    Thanks
