I believe WOTC poorly planned just how many special cards to include in each set.
Scouring TCGPlayer, it would cost me ~$1,600 to collect all 30 inventions. Three months later and another 24 pop out for what'll likely be over $1,000. By the time Kaladesh rotates out, there will likely be 200+ Masterpieces in total, each one probably AVERAGING $50. That's close to $10,000 for just one of each masterpiece.
I realize that some collectors have the pockets to spend $5,000 a year on investment and showcase cards, but the vast majority of players don't. Further, I feel that money that would otherwise be used on other Magic products is spent for collecting these.
Hell, you could get a PLAYSET of every From the Vault for under $5,000 and not have to worry about dropping $5,000 more a year to keep up.
I think these masterpieces are very cool, but I think that they're releasing too many in too short of a time. 25 over a whole block could have probably been a good number; it would allow even most players to try to collect a set if they only had 12-13 to try to collect over a few month period.
Nobody has brought it up yet, but the Kaladesh Inventions start with the 5 gearhulks and then begin in alphabetical order with Aether Vial at 6/54, ending with the three swords at 28/54, 29/54, and 30/54.
I assume the two new swords are 31/54 and 32/54, followed by Inventions that carry on in alphabetization, then followed with X number of Aether Revolt-specific cards rounding out the numerics (i.e. 50/54 - 54/54).
Therefore, I think the only Inventions that'll be in Aether Revolt, other than some Aether Revolt-specific artifacts and artifact creatures, are artifacts and artifact creatures that begin at Swo- up to Zz-.
Anything like Engineered Explosives was skipped over as evidenced by it being absent from the first thirty Inventions. It would have been between Crucible of Worlds (11/54) and Gauntlet of Power (12/54).
