I think I was trying to bend the rules to my favor, since it's not really as clear cut. My original thought was that this situation is like having Balance.
With the resolution of Balance, you'd select all your targets, and the sacrifice happens when all choices are made and then the creatures all leave play simultaneously.
So with Devour, I figured that you'd just be choosing the targets to be sacrificed as the "Devour" resolves...which I concluded as the creature is on the board with the counters and the Soul Warden leaving.
1. From my understanding, "As this creature enters the battlefield" also means it's something (phase/step/choice making) that happens before it's actually on the battlefield.
2. This just makes other issues that aren't as clear to me. Like say I Victimize the Soul Warden. The sacrifice happens on resolution, but would mean that it's off the field before the other two creatures come back from the GY.
3. The replacement effect happening before the event explanation rule seems flawed to me too. Like for example with Infect/Wither. Wouldn't the damage be the event? wouldn't you have to deal the damage before giving the counters?
Board state: I have Soul Warden in the battlefield and enough land/mana.
1. I cast a Creature with Devour. Mycoloth
2. Creature goes through to resolution.
3. I selected the Soul Warden to be "sacrificed"
4. New Creature enters battlefield. Soul Warden hits Graveyard.
5. I get +1 health.
I can not find a ruling or applicable rule(s) specific to this situation.
My contention is that the Soul Warden exits play AT the SAME time and there's a look back issue somewhere due to "simultaneous" things occurring from a single event (the devour creature resolving)...and the SBA window would look back to that event. I do not believe at any time, the Soul Warden would hit the GY before resolving (ie, creature hitting the board)
I think this is correct because it's similar to the Blood Artist and multiple creatures being destroyed from a board wipe.

Thanks if anyone is still following this thread.

Anyone have an idea on this?
Thanks.
