A New and Exciting Beginning

The End of an Era

    Hi All,

I started playing MTG back in 1994 right when Fallen Empires came out (I was in middle school). Back when a starter deck of Revised cost $7.95 (bought many of those, kept none sealed!). Played hard for 4 or 5 years, gradually waned in interest, and was basically completely out by 2000 or 2001. The Urza's block was probably the last one I bought anything from. Back then, you could buy a great condition beta or unlimited Lotus for ~300-400 bucks (though, as a 12-13 year old, it might as well have been todays prices since that kind of money was unimaginable then).

Sold a giant box of old cards to a cardstore about two years ago when I moved. Kicking myself for that now.

About a month ago, my best friend, who I spent years playing MTG with (and who happens to live fairly close to me since I moved in the area two years ago) told me he'd bought a lot of commons/uncommons on Ebay and had built a few decks. A wave of nostalgia passed over me. I went over and we nerded out for about 12 hours playing *****ty decks with cards we'd never heard of or seen (there were almost no cards from our era in the lot, save for reprints or functional reprints). I ended up buying my own lot of commons/uncommons. We both agreed we weren't going to get back into it hardcore, just some cheap lots to play some super casual games.

A month later and I've been buying lots of singles on Ebay, and two boxes of Kaladesh (one to keep, one to crack). He's done the same, in a addition to buying two sealed boxes of Eldritch Moon. We are talking about attending local draft tournaments. He's recruited his wife and a bunch of friends, some of whom played back when we did, others who are complete newbs. I've been going to his house every Sunday to play.

So much has changed since we got out 15 years ago or so, both in the game and the community. I was absolutely SHOCKED that MTG is even more popular now than it was 15-20 years ago...I thought we were playing in its peak!

The itch is back though and we're in deep. Didn't take long. We obviously have more disposable income these days than before, so that helps.

Anyway, that's my story. Looking forward to rejoining the community (I don't even think I had an internet connection at the peak of my playing!)!
