    Is there a reason these aren't best out of 3? It seems insane to me that an aggressive, fast deck will almost always win if they win the coin flip with a strong opening hand. I really hope this gets fixed.

    Thanks for the reply, I'll check this out later. I'm assuming the single elim prizes are better, but I just want to play the matches more than anything.

    New to the forum, also new to mtgo. Been playing magic for many years though. Decided to get an account to play more commander and to also try some vintage cube since I really enjoy watching streamers play it.

    Last night I went 3-0 in my first ever cube with a ridiculous artifact deck, I had a lot of fun. This was single elimination format and I'm wondering how I can do a Swiss format instead? Or do they only do one format per vintage release? I have no idea how any of this works and the FAQ page is vague at best.

    Doss single elim allow me to play my matches the next day or do I have to complete them back to back? After my first opponent lost it jumped me right into the next match without even prompting me.

    Also is there any use for QP's for a casual player like myself? I was excited to win player points to enter into more drafts, but my QP prize seems like something for special events. Sorry that was long and winded, thanks!

  • posted a message on New Game Type - Landmine
    First off I am not entirely sure if this is the appropriate spot for this post, if it needs to move so be it. My small group of friends enjoy Commander on a regular basis, and every now and then we'll try to brainstorm some new game ideas to make things more entertaining. Mostly it amounts to nothing viable or lasting, but we've engineered a new game play that works quite well with Commander and makes the entire match more interactive. The game mode can likely also be integrated in other formats but has not yet been tested. Without further adieu, I present Commander Landmine;

    All Commander rules are in play. All basic land is removed from each deck. You replace all land lost this way with replacement cards that can be legally used with your Commander. There are community mana piles in the middle of the table for each mana type active among all Commander cards.

    For each Commander color there will be x40 of that mana color in one pile. For example if three players have Commanders with a blue mana cost, there is one pile of x120 blue mana.

    For each x40 mana in each pile add two tokens called Landmine with, "Whenever you draw this card, destroy all basic lands you control and all basic lands in your hand. If lands would be lost this way, place them back into the original draw pile. Shuffle Landmine back into the original draw pile." We use Zombie tokens for Landmine ID but you may use anything.

    For each x40 mana in each pile add two tokens called Manashield with, "Shroud. Indestructible. If Manashield would be removed from the game, bring it back to the battlefield under your control. You may only draw up to 2 mana while you control Manashield. If you would draw a Landmine, instead of your land being destroyed, tap all land you control and discard a card. Shuffle Manashield back into the original draw pile." We use Angel tokens for Manashield but you may use anything.

    Game Rules:

    In addition to all Commander rules these modified and/or additional rules are in play;

    You may draw 2,3,4 or 5 cards to open. You must declare how many cards you intend to draw before drawing. Our preferred mulligan rule for this format is you may mulligan once, reshuffle your deck, and draw minus one of your prior draw amount.

    During your upkeep, after your library draw phase, you may draw up to 5 land from any community mana pile. You must declare how much land you take and from which piles before drawing. If you would have more than 7 cards at your end step you must reshuffle that much land back into the original mana pile until you are down to 7 cards unless you have no maximum hand size.

    You may use fetch lands from your library to search any mana pile and play a land as normal, then shuffle that mana pile. You may not draw additional land after this.

    If you would possess two Manashield cards they can be activated in two separate instances of you drawing Landmine cards.

    So there it is, Commander Landmine. So far it's been well received in my community and it adds more interaction among the group with an element of gambling on how much land you should reach for. Please let me know if you and your friends try this and if there's any modifications you would like to suggest. Thanks for reading!
