    Vote: Satyr Hedonist.

If we wanted to reach out to GW agro, Snarecaster is an option, but not very good. I'd rather just take the Goblin Piker.

Whoops. I'll be mostly inactive for the opening parts of this--my laptop is undergoing repair and I only have access to consistent internet weekday mornings.

    Vote: Horizon Chimera.

I doubt we're going to go anywhere constructive with this line.

I think we've reached the end of constructive discussion. This is only going to go off the rails.

    Closed.

Since the discussion is hinged on Modern, I'm going to move this thread there. Modern moderators, if there is an appropriate stickied thread covering this topic, feel free to merge/redirect/close this one.

As always, we have an Official Thread for these types of things. Please use that instead of creating a new one.

  • posted a message on Shipbreaker Kraken vs. Prognostic Sphinx
I have yet to see an answer to this question, so I figured I'd fire it off here.

At the prerelease, player A controls a Shipbreaker Kraken and the required mana to make it monstrous. Player B controls four creatures, one of which is Prognostic Sphinx, and also has at least one card in hand.

It is player A's turn, and he activates the monstrosity ability. It resolves, and player A targets all four creatures player B controls with the tap effect. In response, player B activates Prognostic Sphinx's ability, discarding a card. The Sphinx gains hexproof and becomes tapped.

My question now is, does Prognostic Sphinx remain tapped underneath the monstrosity effect of Shipbreaker Kraken? The ability did not fizzle, because there were multiple legal targets, and Shipbreaker Kraken specifically refers to "those creatures" as the ones that were targeted. However, with hexproof, would the Sphinx have dodged the lockdown from the Kraken's ability?

    Thanks in advance.

I suspect we're on the express train to nowhere constructive with this kind of thread. I'll preemptively shutter it.

We just shuttered the last thread on this one. Given that we already have the relevant testimonies and nothing else has (currently) changed, I don't think this thread has much left to go on.

So it's pretty much Enlarge vs. foil Howl of the Night Pack. Both cards are pretty late here, which is good for us, but I think I'd take Enlarge here for a more aggressive build. Howl is fine, but we're pushing a bit on the heavy end of the curve.

    Vote: Enlarge.

The Darksteel prerelease promo, Shield of Kaldra. I have exactly one copy of this card, and it serves many purposes (in terms of memory).

    - It was my first ever prerelease.
    - I attended that tournament on my fourteenth birthday.
    - In spite of being terrible at Limited (60-card deck, main deck Lich's Tomb), a couple of my opponents were so gracious as to help me identify what to cut and why some cards were perfectly playable (I recall one of my opponents telling me that Grimclaw Bats was acceptable, and could eventually just be even trades on life).
    - I still got a consolation pack despite having to leave early.

Fortunately enough, Donato Giancola, the artist for the Kaldra prerelease promos, was at the Fifth Dawn prerelease, and I got it signed for good measure. While it does lurk in my old binder full of junk and promos, I sure as hell don't intend to part with it.

I can't remember how good or bad Utopia Vow was. Pacifism is sweet, but accelerating/fixing can be a thing.

Recluse is obviously the card with a lot more basis, and perhaps MMA has swayed me towards it.

Vote: Saltfield Recluse, willing to be wrong.

Giant Spider is still on-color, but I have to wonder if we'll be blue or red as our secondary. Sensory Deprivation is a fine pick in blue, as well.

Vote: Giant Spider, but not against changing to SD.

We have more than a sliver of hope, what with all these Slivers wheeling and stuff.
