    Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. Sorry for the disappearing act; nice to see things have carried on without me, though.

    No, I'm not going to explain why I was gone; nobody needs to hear horror stories of what someone who's insane and lying can put you through legally.

    I'm also probably not going to be coming back, mostly just due to lack of interest on my part. I will come by and check in every once in a while, though.

    Have fun, guys.

    The DCC: February 27th, 2015

    Welcome to the DCC!
    If you have any questions or comments, feel free to post in the All-New DCC Discussion Thread.

    How To Play

    How does this card-making game work? It's simple! Whenever your card receives a vote in the day's poll, you receive [1] point for the month. If your card ends up with the most votes for that day, you will receive [2] additional points for the month. In the event of a tie, each person who tied receives [1] additional point. At the end of each month, the person with the most points on the scoreboard wins that month, then the scoreboard is cleared for the next month. You can participate in as many or as few days as you want in any month.

    Rules

    • Each day you may post any card you want. On the next day all of the posted cards will be put into a poll the thread as long as your card didn't get disqualified - see the next point for more details. If you post more than one card in a DCC thread, only the first card you post will be taken.
    • When you vote, you need to make exactly two votes for two different people. Vote for the cards that are listed in the first post, not other cards being posted in the thread. If you notice that you've only voted for one person, include your second vote in a post, even if you're not submitting a card.
    • If you want to change your vote for any reason, post that change in the day's thread (you can include it with your card if you want). Changed votes in the discussion thread will be ignored.
    • Voting for only one person, for three or more people, or for yourself will earn you an asterisk by your name in the monthly leaderboard. So will failing to vote if you've posted a card. (We're not going to do anything about people who don't vote or post cards; that would be kind of silly.) This indicates that you're on probation for the next 21 days. If you're on probation and you make another improper vote, your card will be disqualified. Repeated disqualification is grounds for warnings and/or infractions for not following the game rules, so please don't do it.
    • Voting for everything in the poll will be grounds for a lifetime ban from the DCC. Don't do it. It just wastes the thread creators' time.
    • If you wish to post a render, please use the hyperlink option when posting your card and make the card name the image link. Renders are usually large enough to clog up the list, so submit a text-formed card and (optionally) a link in the name to the render.
    • This thread is just for your card submission. Take your questions/comments to our discussion thread. If it's a question, comment, or complaint about probation, PM me instead and I'll explain it.
    • Anyone can post the new thread for the day. When you post it, make sure that:
      • You have a poll in the thread;
      • You include everyone's cards (excluding cards that have been disqualified);
      • The poll is marked as public and multiple choice with a one-day time limit; and
      • You update the leaderboard with the previous day's scores.
    (An easy way to post the new thread is to hit the multiquote button on every post in the previous day's thread, then click Post Reply. Select everything in this post, copy it, and then paste it into the first post for a new thread. You'll have to clean up a few small things, like quote tags around the opening post and the previous day's cards.)

    Note of the Day

    Up early today so I can go cash my paycheck.

    Also, I don't get another day off until next Friday. Gaaaaaaaaaah

    I sometimes flush my own designs on account of wordiness / ugliness. Usually I just sit on them for a while and I'll think of a way to do it that's a little easier on the eyes.

    In the case of Ice Cauldron, it's one of those designs that time forgot. As neat as it is once you understand it, I don't think I could get behind it if it were released now. That text box is a hot mess. In my opinion, comprehensibility counts for something.
    Yeah, I've tried redesigning Ice Cauldron at least once myself. Part of the problem is the whole "...and you only get to use it for that card, but you can go ahead and cast that card without using that mana" edge case, which I'm pretty sure a redesigned version wouldn't bother including.

    At that point it could be as simple as "X, T: Note the type and amount of mana used to pay this activation cost." + "T: Add the last noted type and amount of mana to your mana pool." (well, not exactly, as you don't want to be able to activate the second ability without having activated the first ability once), which is a surprisingly short card... but generally that garners complaints about "memory issues" from some people.

    (You could even improve the card by basically having the noted mana operate as a stack - the last ability proceeds to also "erase" your last note in addition - but at that point the card might actually be a little too good to be printable.)

    The DCC: February 24th, 2015

      • You have a poll in the thread;
      • You include everyone's cards (excluding cards that have been disqualified);

    Eh, the reason it's manifested is because there's no guarantee the original top card of your library is a permanent card, and at present manifest is the only way to get a face-down instant or sorcery onto the battlefield.

    Incidentally, that's where the second ability comes in. Practically speaking, it amounts to "unmorph anything, if you choose to pay its mana cost". The problem is that when it's an instant or a sorcery (or, really, an Aura as well), you can't just say "okay, turn it face up"; you have to go through the normal spell-casting process. So the process ends up being similar to casting things from your graveyard, except this time it's from the battlefield. (Yes, that means that "whenever a creature leaves the battlefield" triggers will get triggered.) The side effect is that it means that for things that can unmorph without problems, they have to go through a slightly more complicated process than just turning it face-up; but it's an existing process, at least.

    That said, I don't normally like "cast this from the battlefield" cards because there's rarely a good reason to do it that way instead of just flickering them. This happens to be one of the exceptions where you can't just do that.

    As a real quick example, take MDenham's Errekwor Stone on February 18th. I think I get what it does... it seems cool and creative... but it takes a lot of shortcuts with standard Magic terminology, and I'm left questioning whether I'm reading it as-intended.
    It takes exactly one shortcut! Smile The problem is that exchanging things isn't used very often (it's defined in the rules, though; but it's just not used very often because some of the requirements that it imposes internally aren't obvious at first glance).

    For what it's worth, these would be the rulings on that card:
    • If you somehow lose ownership of the targeted permanent, the exchange fails;
    • When the exchange occurs, the targeted permanent goes on top of your library at the same time as the original top card of your library gets manifested. It may enter the battlefield under another player's control if the targeted permanent was controlled by another player;
    • Everything that was attached to the targeted permanent remains attached to the manifested card;
    • With the second ability, you are not casting that card from a player's hand, but from the battlefield. It will go to the stack, and if you somehow have a face-down token, it will cease to exist at that point.

    That said... the wording was chosen for a specific purpose, and is almost entirely standard wording. The "one shortcut" I mentioned - making manifesting the top card of your library part of the exchange itself - is the exception, and it exists because the standard wording of "Manifest the top card of your library, then exchange it with target permanent. If they were exchanged this way, put the targeted permanent on top of your library." (which is the functionally equivalent version - leaving out that "If they were exchanged this way" clause makes the ability do things differently when you have an empty library) just doesn't flow as well when you read it. As a result, I'm reasonably certain that Wizards would choose to use the same wording I did. While there's something to be said for precision, sometimes you can be precise to the point of getting in the way of clarity.

    The DCC: February 21st, 2015

      • You have a poll in the thread;
      • You include everyone's cards (excluding cards that have been disqualified);

I especially like that it can act as soft removal in a pinch. BTW, I cost it at 4 in the MCC, but I want to test it at 3 here.

      • You have a poll in the thread;
      • You include everyone's cards (excluding cards that have been disqualified);

    Correct. Also, this used to be a lot easier when it was just a poll at the top and I could see who voted; there wasn't necessarily a "dead" post consisting of only votes for people who wanted to vote but not submit a card. (The reason it switched to the current setup was because when MTGS moved to this forum software from vBulletin, we lost the ability to see who voted for what in a poll. Needless to say, that makes determining whether or not people voted correctly impossible through the poll system.)

    The DCC: February 13th, 2015

      • You have a poll in the thread;
      • You include everyone's cards (excluding cards that have been disqualified);

    The DCC: February 10th, 2015

      • You have a poll in the thread;
      • You include everyone's cards (excluding cards that have been disqualified);

    Nah. At four mana you'd need 8 lands in play for a big swing, in addition to being restricted to basics.
    You'd only need six lands (two of which are Karoo-type lands) to swing for 12 at four mana; granted this means you're probably running a RG deck of some sort with decent land acceleration.

    At three mana you only need one Karoo-type land (plus Pyretic Ritual) to play it, meaning you can swing for 6 with a total of three lands (on top of whatever you already have). That said, that's Modern instead of Standard that you'd be worrying about there.

    That's hard. It certainly feels weak at 3 but also too strong at 2.
    The correct response is obviously "1R + 'As an additional cost to cast this, sacrifice a Mountain.'" then.

    EDIT: More seriously... keep 'em 3/1, give them trample. Looks good at three mana, and probably still okay even as far as four mana then.

    • If you wish to post a render, please use the hyperlink option when posting your card and make the card name the image link. Renders are usually large enough to clog up the list, so submit a text-formed card and (optionally) a link in the name to the render.

    • Anyone can post the new thread for the day. When you post it, make sure that:
      • You have a poll in the thread;
      • You include everyone's cards (excluding cards that have been disqualified);

    The DCC: February 7th, 2015

    The DCC: February 4th, 2015

      • You include everyone's cards (excluding cards that have been disqualified);
      • The poll is marked as public and multiple choice with a one-day time limit; and

      • You have a poll in the thread;
      • You include everyone's cards (excluding cards that have been disqualified);

    I'm all for pushing the boundaries of what's acceptable in MTG, but unless I'm missing something, refine would fundamentally change the game of Magic. If 14 cards were printed with this ability, it would be possible to make a deck of 53 refine cards and the 7 cards you need to win 1st turn, every time. Basically, it would negate the "Decks must have a minimum of 60 cards" rule.

    The DCC: January 28th, 2015

      • You have a poll in the thread;
      • You include everyone's cards (excluding cards that have been disqualified);

    Working today, have tomorrow off, then get to figure out things for this weekend.

    Also, Indighost's score has been corrected (I'd forgotten to add in the points to his total yesterday).
