Azrael posted a message on Regarding Non-MTG Related Sub-ForumsPosted in: Community DiscussionQuote from CorpTI'd probably add Debate and Mafia, but that's a good start.
I'm just going to number this out.
1. How much do you know about any of the sections you want to destroy? For starters, the MTGS Mafia forums are frequently touted as the best place to play mafia on the internet. That's due to the fact that we have both a long-time group of veterans, many of whom have played together for seven years, as well as a steady stream of newcomers that wouldn't be available to us on a stand-alone site. We have creative designs, lovingly crafted flavor, and a number of entertaining players - things that just get lost amidst a giant site and slow-paced forum like mafiascum.net. The amount of data that we have here would be very difficult to save, and the amount of time and nostalgia that many of the members have for these games are considerable. People put a lot of time into them, and they have a lot of fun, and they like to have that fun among people that they know in the place they've always been.
2. Would you care to take a guess at how many of the site's moderators have emerged out of these sections, many of them reaching the highest levels? Try recruiting moderators purely out of the MTG-related sections of the forum, and you're going to wind up with forums that look like SCG, TCG, and Wizards. Many of the site's dedicated mods and members originate in those areas - people who are willing to put in extra time to take part in a community, and not just talk about a card game.
3. Its morally callous, and significantly angers/annoys people who did nothing to deserve it. People enjoy their time in those sections, and most of them don't have a bit to do with drama on other parts of the site. The mafia section hasn't gone on the warpath in self-defense in about five years, and throughout its history has wished for nothing more than the chance to play the game without anyone gumming up the works for us and imposing unnecessary structure. Most people in other sections are exactly the same way. Most of them have probably never seen the inside of CI.
4. Moderator burnout is a function of a lot of factors, but one of the most critical is how the moderators envision their role. When moderators seek to make the userbase happy and consult with them on what changes are necessary and desirable, no one complains. There was no great secret or special skill-set involved in why from December to February of this last year the staff kept CI entirely free of drama; and even saw a spontaneous moderator appreciation thread pop up. Whenever there was a controversial decision, admin went to the users for feedback, and we took what they said seriously, we policed our own as needed and had representatives from every important constituency represented on staff. When you shift towards a model where the moderators take on an authoritarian, top-down management style, and do things such as close down entire sub-forums wholesale without regard to how people will feel about that, you're going to create a mess.
5. Is the site here to serve the moderators, or are the moderators here to serve the site? -

HomaridHoney posted a message on Regarding Non-MTG Related Sub-ForumsUltimately, MtGS is not simply a Magic forum; it's a collection of communities brought together by a common love of a children's card game.Posted in: Community Discussion
Think of MtGS like a virtual LGS - you go there to sling cardboard, discuss the latest block, and scheme up new strategies. And tell jokes, talk about common interests, and even just wax philosophical about life in general. With friends. As a community. It's natural for relationships to develop when you spend so much time in the same virtual space as somebody else, and I personally believe the site is improved greatly by providing a place for its users to socialise that isn't necessarily bound to "what do you guys think of Card X?"
Let's not kid ourselves here. Most non-MtG sections of this site run fine and drama free. I can't remember the last time the Mafia subforum was splashed across Community Issues. To use a tired expression, we'd be throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Which is odd, because I'm not even sure throwing the bathwater out is what we want to do. Gotta stay green.

No, I'm not going to explain why I was gone; nobody needs to hear horror stories of what someone who's insane and lying can put you through legally.
I'm also probably not going to be coming back, mostly just due to lack of interest on my part. I will come by and check in every once in a while, though.
Have fun, guys.

How does this card-making game work? It's simple! Whenever your card receives a vote in the day's poll, you receive [1] point for the month. If your card ends up with the most votes for that day, you will receive [2] additional points for the month. In the event of a tie, each person who tied receives [1] additional point. At the end of each month, the person with the most points on the scoreboard wins that month, then the scoreboard is cleared for the next month. You can participate in as many or as few days as you want in any month.
a pollthe thread as long as your card didn't get disqualified - see the next point for more details. If you post more than one card in a DCC thread, only the first card you post will be taken. You have a poll in the thread; You include everyone's cards (excluding cards that have been disqualified); The poll is marked as public and multiple choice with a one-day time limit; andOverslept because last night involved me staying up later than I wanted to originally.
