Thanks for the very detailed reply! With the suggestions you posted I think I want to mix in some swamp in this deck. Since I'll be taking out some of those lands do you recommend to just add basic swamps?
I found some Flayer Drone that might be a nice addition if I wanted to add red as my third color as well.
I was recommended to watch Budget Deck Tech a while back and boy has his videos been AMAZING. I'm recently getting back into the MTG scene and this is helping me decide what I want to play. Specifically, I found this video:
Now, I know it's probably not the best deck in the world, but it seems like a lot of fun AND I have most of the cards already so it's rather cheap to play. It seems interesting to me so I would like this to be my first standard deck I build (and nothing rotates! :D)
I tinkered with it a little since I had some of the cards he said I could replace with. Now, my question is: I have 1 Kozilek, the Great Distortion , 2 Thought-Knot Seer and 2 Hangarback Walker. He stated that if you had these you can more than likely upgrade the deck to make it even more powerful. What do you recommend I take out to put in place of these? I'm not opposed of buying more of them if needed to make it better. I was thinking of Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger as well.
Also, would it be possible to add another color to this deck if I really wanted to turn it up a notch? I like the way this flows, but if I can make it even better I would like to (I've also been reading mono decks aren't really that popular in the format at the moment.)
As you can see I'm not a deck builder (yet) so I'm looking for guidance to get me started. Hopefully one day I can do this on my own, but there's no shame in asking for advice
Thanks for taking the time to read/respond to my thread!
Edit: I just wanted to state I love this tagging feature. Makes things so much easier!
I'm a semi-new player looking to get back into standard. I've been out of the game for about 8 years so it's been quite a while. From what I've been reading a new rotation is coming soon. Since KoT and FR are being rotated out I want to start looking into making a control deck based on what's left. I'm assuming it's a good idea to wait for the new set to come out in April, but I wanted to see what else is out there for me to start building. If a black/blue deck is possible I'd like to make one of those since those are my two favorite.
A little about my MTG history: The last time I played was around 2007-2008 with my friends super casually. It was a blast and eventually I wound up making a pretty old school goblin deck. I don't have my old cards anymore so I'm starting fresh again. I just spoke with someone at a LGS about their MTG nights and he said there's always people there playing every night. I've never been to one of these so I know it'll be a little nerve wrecking at first, but I really want to get back into it and start playing again. It's mostly standard, which I don't mind at all because I like getting new cards and making decks; I like to stay fresh.
Does anyone have recommendations on where to start? Like, which set I should start with first, etc? Keep in mind I'm open to basically anything: buying singles, starter decks, booster boxes (I'm a huge nerd when it comes to opening packs. I love the thrill). SOI looks really interesting as well so I figured this might be a good time to get back into it. Money isn't an issue, but I'm not willing to spend hundreds on single cards. I used to play Mountain/Swamp, but I kind of want to get into Island control, maybe with a mix of swamp since it's one of my favorites. I just wanted the Pro Tour 2015 and saw a deck that used no creatures and all spells and was able to win. I would love to try something like that since that seems pretty amazing. Maybe, eventually, I would like to go to tournaments once I get back into it and get better at it again, but for now I just want to build some standard decks and have a lot of fun.
I'm still catching up with the terms of cards; I looked up madness, but what you mean when you say he becomes an outlet for your opponent?

I played around a bit and came up with this:
4 Matter Reshaper
4 Reality Smasher
4 Endless One
4 Hangarback Walker
4 Bearer of Silence
2 Warping Wail
4 Spatial Contortion
3 Titan's Presence
4 Crumbling Vestige
4 Ruins of Oran-Rief
4 Llanowar Wastes
4 Mirrorpool
4 Sea Gate Wreckage
5 Swamp
I'm thinking of adding Grasp of Darkness. Trying to decide what I want to take out, if anything. How does anyone feel about Ob Nixilis Reignited?
