I just got my tops for painter. It really sucks to know that I invested in a fringe deck that I knew wouldn't put me in the best position competitively. I have always loved grindstone so I wanted to play the deck for nostalgia. Its not the tops that bother me. Its the ancient tombs, city of traitors, and imperial recruiters that piss me off. What a freaking waste of my time.

I am not trying to be pessimistic here. This set seems really awful. Am I crazy? The rare slots seem so so so bad.

    Cycling abuse? Count me in!

Its 6 mana. By turn 6 you have probably cycled everything. So the plan is what? Do nothing until turn 6 then make drakes. Maybe if we had actual counterspells in blue.

This entire set seems like EDH cards.

The original functionality always made perfect sense to me, but I'm that kind of person. As a judge, I received so many questions about split card CMCs, even from experienced players, so I fully understand and support the change.

As for the cries of "dumbing down the game", exploiting weird rules loopholes doesn't make you a good player, sorry.

Im not sure it has anything to do with people thinking they are good players. I think people are tired of being told one thing just to have it change because wotc panders to new players/potential customers.

I started playing in 96. I played through 2004. Came back to the game in 08-13. Took another break. I started getting back into it 15.

It is less fun, the cards are lame, the ones that aren't lame get nerfed or banned.

It really does seem like part of the community gets to dictate or define what "fun" is to the other parts. Just my opinion. Magic has more players than ever. Good for wizards. I think the game is the worst ive ever seen it.

Yes, they are dumbing down the game. Sell your collections and play legacy. Its the only real magic left. Standard will be Pokemon before you know it.

Find a play group that allows it. Nobody can tell you how to enjoy the game. Dont concern yourself with banlist.

It's true that blue is bad, but the format as a whole looks good, and full of diversity. Oh, well. I was very for the preordain/SFM unban, but after reading Todd Stevens article I had a feeling there'd be no unbans.

Blue is so bad that 27% of the decks on MTGGoldfish are running a basic Island. Rolleyes

I guess people just like to trot out horrible decks.

I want to play decks with ONLY islands.

I, like many of you have always been fond of playing blue control decks. Many of us that started way back, for me it was Revised, tend to gravitate toward blue. With that being said I don't blame WotC for not making any changes. The fact is Modern is thriving, so why change anything? Blue is currently so bad that 1 unban isn't going to turn it around. My guess is they are fine with how the format is currently playing and nothing will change in April either.

Its the reason why its not viable that bothers me. Because its viewed as not being any fun. They don't make cards to make it better because they don't want it to be better.

For me, that's fine, I can play older formats. I just feel bad for any new players who are told blue control is for griefers who ruin all the fun of playing op creatures on turn 2.

If they never make blue reactive viable then fine. Spells need to be stronger though. We need more fatal pushes. Im sick of playing yugioh.

Blah, it makes me sad there is no place for blue reactive in modern. Wizards worries about new players way too much. They would rather kill one of oldest deck types rather than upset new players when their totally awesome craw wurm is countered. I wish it was 1999-2004 again.

That's where some people differ. For some reason, many people believe some archtypes have an inherent right to tier 1 status. Even multiple tier 2 reactive blue decks are insufficient according to some (many?) players - all that seems to matter is that a Uxx reactive shell is tier 1 (and tier 1 as we define it, absent a WotC definition).

In support of this, I have read various statements which imply that WotC promised that banning twin would open the doors for another Uxx deck to be tier 1. This is not what WotC stated for the banning:
Decks that are this strong can hurt diversity by pushing the decks that it defeats out of competition. They can also reduce diversity by supplanting similar decks. For instance, Shaun McLaren won Pro Tour Born of the Gods playing this Jeskai control deck. Alex Bianchi won our most recent Modern Grand Prix playing a similar deck but adding the Splinter Twin combination. Similarly, Temur Tempo used to see play at high-level events but has been supplanted by Temur Twin.

We considered what one would do with the cards from a Splinter Twin deck with Splinter Twin banned. In the case of some Jeskai or Temur, there are very similar decks to build. In other cases, there is Kiki-Jiki as a replacement.

In the interest of competitive diversity, Splinter Twin is banned from Modern.
I don't think there is a way to read a specific tier 1 promise in that. Multiple tier 2 decks, to me, appear to be acceptable from the ban announcement.

Given that, I don't see why at least one Uxx control build must be tier 1 and no worse.
I think the much bigger issue is that there are no T1 control decks at all. If there were some form of control like Lantern or RW Prison in T1 it'd be a different story, but as it there are multiple T1 Aggro and Midrange decks, a ramp deck, and a combo deck (I'm counting RG Valakut as combo, though some might argue that it isn't) all for players to choose from, but if you want to play any form of control, UXx or otherwise, there's nothing really there nor have any new control decks really broken through since Nahiri tanked from T1.

I'll concede that there is no obligation for Wizards to print cards necessary for UXx control decks to become T1, and I'll concede that having a control deck consistently remain T2 is a clear sign that Control isn't completely unrepresented. However, I don't think it's really wrong for players who want to play a more reactive game to ask for the tools necessary for a control deck to break the barrier into T1 and either stay there or at least sit in the high T2/low T1 category. Yeah, Modern doesn't stop being a fun, popular format with a huge variety of decks to play and expect to do well without one, but I don't think it's so wrong to want a little extra variety

I don't play modern. I would play modern if I thought playing control wouldn't be a complete waste of my time.

The "playing against control isn't fun" argument really bothers me. Less bans. Please stop asking for everything to be banned.

I think the optimism around this set making modern affordable and creating a paradise for the format isn't going to work out in the long run.

I think this game will die without chase cards. A lot of people open packs in hopes of winning the lottery. So, while it may allow more people access to tournies, you are going to completely alienate collectors and investors and whether you want to believe it or not, those people are just as important as tourney players.

Im fine with trying to keep card prices around 50 to 60. People who want everything reprinted to the point where everything costs a dollar?

I think those ideals will kill the game long before speculators or investors. I hope they don't print into oblivion.

What is the incentive for LGSs to crack packs for singles? Its not worth anybodys time to crack 100 booster boxes to sell 1 to 5 dollar cards.

I miss the days when people could play with whatever they wanted to without the player base whining and complaining that having their cards countered is "cancerous" or unfun.

I miss control because of the time period of magic it represents for me. When everybody didn't send wizards mad tweets and found ways to beat decks they didn't like outside of "ban it" "needs to be banned " "ruins my fun".

I don't think I'm on board the hype train. It seems fine, but leaving up 2 artifacts is still an oportunity cost. I don't think improvise is as good as people seem no think. I am interested in seeing if artifact control could work though. Prophetic prism seems really good with improvise.

I agree. Improvise is jumping through hoops and meeting requirements for the spells to be good. This is going to be mana leak for 3 some times. That's bad.
