Nakhla posted a message on What cards are you most happy to see go from competitive Standard? What cards will you miss?Posted in: Standard Archives
Maybe I don't feel the ire towards Mono Black's arsenal because I remember how mediocre it was in INN-RTR Standard: Nightveil Specter, Desecration Demon, and Pack Rat were all non-starters when they first came out. Even with Liliana of the Veil in Standard, no less, there just wasn't a viable Mono Black deck, and goodness did the deck brewers try.
For me, the only thing I'll be happy to see leave Standard is Mutavault. I like Mutavault; I play with it, but it was far more omnipresent than any single card had a right to be: every single deck uses it in RTR-THS Standard.
I'll be sorry to see Supreme Verdict and Sphinx's Revelation go, they were the cornerstones of Control the past two seasons. -

Great first pick for RUW, definitely fantastic in limited.
Will be very sad when opened in prize packs/booster boxes, definition of a dollar rare. -

Legendary Creature - Human Soldier
When Anafenza the Foremost attacks, put a +1/+1 counter on another target tapped creature you control.
If a creature card would be put into an opponent's graveyard from anywhere, exile it instead.

God, Dictate of Karametra is a ballsy play in a meta that has a fair number of devotion decks. I do really like these lists, though. Pearl Lake Ancient and Villainous Wealth are some intriguing wincons.
Interesting to note the lack of Prognostic Sphinx.
Silence the Believers becomes very good in a deck like this.
I would also include 1-2 copies of Embodiment of Spring. Helps the aggro matchup and converts to a land later in the game.
Also, the lack of mainboard disruption in the form of Thoughtseize makes me scratch my head. Counterspells are great but the deck seems like it would be weak to cards like Goblin Rabblemaster and Brimaz, King of Oreskos.

A burn deck has 16 or more spells that deal damage to you. We have...Courser? Cool story.
UB is already a tighter list. It's not 100% tighter play that will make BUG do well. It's 100% tighter draws. Which automatically makes us weaker.
We don't ramp into late game plays. UB already has Gandalf. We get it a turn earlier sometimes and then we will win, as long as burn isn't being pointed at our face.
Reactive game is how you will go turns 3-x. Before that you are Sylvan Caryatid and Courser. For what? Two points of life.
I'm not trying to naysay this deck. I'm simply pointing out that its advantages over pure UB control lists are negligible.

Jeskai's real menace is their burn. Stock up on some more lifegain and you have the inevitability in that matchup. There are plenty of cards that we don't use (Horizon Chimera, the refuge lands, etc.) that we could use to gain life and put roadblocks in front of them. Villainous Wealth will also blow them out.
With Kiora as subpar as she is there is little reason to continue with BUG and most folks who want to control will have to do it in UB or UWB.
Our green cards are:
Sylvan Caryatid
Courser of Kruphix
Kiora, the Crashing Wave
Not really compelling reasons to play green at all, if you ask me. I want this deck to work as much as all of you but I am struggling to see a reason to continue developing what is clearly a diluted strategy.

Void Snare is very good as well and will help the monogreen devotion matchup, which has historically been quite difficult for us.
Tlaloc, love the Singing Bell Strike. I admit that I overlooked that card until now. Seems like a nice answer to several of the decks doing well in the format, specifically Jeskai Tempo.
Tempo plays into walkers are how we function. There isn't a lot of good 2-for-1 removal out there right now so we have to take what we can get in Sultai Charm and Hero's Downfall.
