Vault makes Jund and Delver a joke... pathetically easy. So does the gifts package. They simply cannot deal with your almost 3 plans of attack (lifegain/kill them/gifts->iona). To those of you who are not running this (especially gifts), you are simply missing out.
~PTQ Report~ Total Record of played matches: 6-2-2
My father and I both played my version of BANT. My father left his deck at the house before the tournament, so he played a slightly sub-optimal sideboard (after borrowing ~60 cards), that ultimately lost him one of his matches.
We ended up playing one of the rounds, and I conceded to him because he had better breakers. His final record was 4-1-1 (getting 10th-7 people were tied at 13 points), and I ended up 3-2-1. Also, the one match that my father lost was to himself because he didn't know that maelstrom pulse killed both wurm tokens from Wurmcoil... (however, I didn't know this either).
Round 2: UW Tron DRAW (Very good matchup... VERY bummed, but got to realm razer, which was sweet).
Round 3: UWB Control (2-0 Win)
Round 4: Concession to Father (He had better breakers)
Round 5: UR Delver (2-0 Win)
Round 6: Melira Pod run by Ali Aintrazi (2-1 Win)
Overall, the deck performed very well as it had in testing.
In changing the deck, I do not much like the kitchen finks; however, my father likes them a lot... I think perhaps Spell Snare or lol DISTORTION STRIKE would be better, or maybe elspeth or swordWaP. We thought Strangleroot was better than goyf, but again, it is a close call.
Gifts adds a whole new dimension to the deck that CANNOT be overlooked... a fast gifts for Iona/Elesh will win the game against 70 percent of the field.
Well, there you have it! Bummed that we didn't top 8, but you win some; you lose some.
I've been running this deck a lot, and needless to say, I really think this is a very resilient and all in all AWESOME deck, it wins a lot, and is the best aggro deck I've seen since affinity. Currently, I like the UW version the most, but I'd like to try a black version with duress main instead of preordain. Could it be better? Worse? I really like unified will in the sideboard, but idk, also opinions on spellskite mainboard?
What even beats this deck? Honestly, I'm really finding a hard time beating Valakut or losing with Valakut; does Valakut have any objectively bad matchups? The only thing I could find close is maybe Hawkward? hmmm what are your guys's thoughts
Here is what I would do - perhaps they are questionable, I would dismember the battlement, and I would spellpierce any ramp spell, and counter harrow because it immensely sets them back, but if I didn't have spell pierce I would let them resolve their ramp, and counter/remove their bigger creatures. I DID draw multiple luminarchs/leylines every single game, but a more of a problem was either not drawing enough answers or not drawing enough win condition (luminarchs) or luminarchs did not get there. It seems to me that the list just isn't all that consistent against valakut for whatever the reason. I mean almost every game I would get a jace or even multiples and even when swimming in card advantage, it did not seem to get there. Have you tested against a Valakut deck running solemns? If you have please post the results because atm, it doesnt seem to work.
Also, did NOT have Gideons, because I was just testing Blade's list because he is a good player. Perhaps Gideon will give the pressure and the protection needed to post good results against Valakut, but then again, perhaps not.
I had leyline turn 1 4/5 games, 2 games preboard 3 games post board. Turn 1 Leyline turn 2 luminarch got me there game one, but beyond that it never would work out. Even with the amount of removal that they have, solemn + ulabrask + primeval means its very hard to play the sit back and wait for luminarch game. My draws all game wern't even bad, it just flopped in the end. Not once did he burn me out with Valakut; all games were decided by small incremental damage through solemns etc... I know that 5 games is a small subset, but even when I felt like I was drawing well, it never seemed to work in the end.
I playtested Blade's creatureless version against Valakut, LSV's version with solemn simulacrum, and it wasn't very good at all. I won one game and lost four, with solemns etc your luminarchs never seem to go off, and its not that I was playing poorly at all earlier today I was very happy with the deck beating UB with two consecrated sphinxes out etc winning very often; however the fact of the matter is if you cannot beat Valakut then go home; needless to say, I will try other UW versions of the deck, but Blade's version is probably not going to be the one that I bring to Nationals.
I played in the North Carolina regionals 260 people placed second with elves, here is the list. (I went 6-0-2) playing against cawblade twice, RB vampiers, jund, kuldotha red, and monored
Quote me for truth you rehabs Elspeth is always better than Rafiq in every instance UNLESS u have shorecrasher mimic out, that is THE ONLY TIME where Rafiq is better. Now flame me for kicks
Regardless of the math of the 5th card being a spell or no (which wasn't what I was arguing against, BTW), what I know for sure is that having four lands on top will make me lose games regardless if the probability says that even the next 20 cards are lands, while putting them on the bottom will take those 4 dead draws away.
THAT is what the Knoll is good for, taking dead draws away and being occasionally relevant.
K Jiaozy, saying "Regardless of the math" is like saying "regardless of the statistcs" If you knoll and have 4 random cards on the top of your library, no matter if you put them on the bottom, the next 4 cards could be all lands, or some lands, or all spells. Without deck manipulation, Spinerock Knoll helps nothing in taking away dead draws.
What do u think of -4 rafiq +1 Finest Hour (along with the 3 already in) +x Kitchen Finks +x Dauntless Escort, Rafiq just seems so underpowered whenever playing him, he dies to everything and just gets blocked by SP 3 times... Persist + Finest Hour means whenever they wraths, or remove one of your creatures you will still be able to attack with a creature the next turn.
I really do not like Rafiq in this deck, I believe that garruck, or even Chameleon Colossus or Battlegrace Angle would be better.
I drafted green every. single. time.
The green in this set looks ... pretty phenomenal, but as do both the black and white, so I guess only time will tell.
Blue looks HORRENDOUS! :((( Aethermage adept/Looter
