  • posted a message on The MTGS Wiki Round Table
For the last few hours, I have been going through things that I have missed during my absence and other things that haven't been missed but have been there, such as the main page, that may require a design (if not a rebranding).

This is an aesthetic matter but MTGS Wiki has essentially had the same main page and look since 2008/2009. Now is your chance to make a difference.

For the main page, what do you think would be the best layout for this page; what should be displayed; and what colours (list of colours at Wikipedia) would you like to see used? Uploaded sketched or MS Paint jobs would be helpful but words are good too!

How would you like the wiki to look like? Shout at the sysops!

I can't even create "MTG Salvation Wiki: Community portal".

The 404 error messages for MTGS Wiki and here could be more helpful <http://www.xmlplease.com/error404>.

  • posted a message on Your hobbies and interests; what are they?
This intro post requires work but this thread is self-explanatory enough and hopefully won't become either heated or cold.

My hobbies include reading, astronomy, playing pool and racquet sports, and shopping.
My interests include dealing with people and trying to help them and cooking.
My professional interests (as in what one does; if you have no employment, meaningful or otherwise, I suppose this would be blank) include fighting morbidity and mortality on the front lines and in a back-seat position. I sometimes find myself doing paperwork.
My passions include (subsets of) people. It can be difficult.

The news has become unpleasant to read due to the high volume of Olympics-related articles and there's nothing interesting to learn about them.

Mostly I hang around and kill spam.
Which is the technical way of saying that we dismantle and occasionally card baseless speculation.
That's most of the duty Star and I share, aside from the more general rules.
Perhaps it's time I revisit that subforum.

So, what does subforum or its users do there? Not to try to have you merge with the wiki, but conceivably there's significant (potential) overlap between Storyline and MTGS Wiki. The entire boards could become a wiki, though. Tongue
We're also trying to put together better info threads with newer links and generally improve the quality of our resources.
Glad to know that you appreciate my appreciation for references.

What are usually used? Novels? MTG.com? There's not much out there really and as soon as there's a new block, there'll be little else of that in the near future.

It wasn't so bad before Mirrodin.

    Seriously? Wow, ok.
Sorry. Don't take this the wrong way or personally.
I thought people might be interested in the Called, for instance, being comprised at various times by the major movers in this community, & having made the jump from chaos on News, to the format we're used to, to this site.
    Maybe.

Not sure what to say, so I won't say anything.
    Quote from Barinellos
Honestly, only the Called would find that interesting and then the question would be if they would look at the wiki for any information about themselves or not.

Your average wiki reader isn't going to find it interesting, probably because the average wiki reader won't know who they are to start with.
The average MTGS Wiki reader is unknown.
The average MTGS Wiki visitor is a spammer.

I feel that sysops, general editors, and some MTGS members, some of whom are staff, should talk about this sometime.
    Keen? Available? Let me know.

It's certainly been taken care of now, but I was just hitting random pages the other day and realized that this hadn't happened at that point.
    Grin
I checked the talk page and was stunned to see I had raised the issue a full year before.
Noticed that too two times now. The previous time, sometime in late 2011, there were no references for this, so I didn't budge.
So it's good to see this finally addressed.
Well, I suppose you can support my move if anyone says to move it back. Tongue

I CBB to open my PM inbox but could you describe your work as a Storyline mod? I'm not really sure what you guys do there and haven't ventured that way since The Squirrel Master (or however it was spelt).

Cleared your cache? Deleted your temp folder?

B (not sure how this is said or what it means), is this page (http://wiki.mtgsalvation.com/article/MTG_Salvation_Wiki:Community_portal) also broken for you by any chance?

    Quote from TheRogue
I don't necessarily have time to take a business management class or have any such classes scheduled for this coming year.

but as a non-business major what can i do that would be something i can add to my resume or list of experiences that might suggest i'm a good candidate for manager or director level positions?

Never worked in this industry but have friends that have or do.

If you want to be dishonest about your résumé, you could list things and maybe get the job or more likely get screened out at the interview.

Perhaps you should consider working your way up? It'll be so worth it when you're promoted to manager or director someday and doing this will enrich one with experience that might so dearly be needed.

Are night classes or part-time education not an option? Whatever you do, best of luck with it.

Hi, Sen. Thanks for your reply. I concede that I asked a somewhat stupid or silly question; perhaps I should ask for some categories of productivity programs that are available on iOS.

This iPhone thing is terrible for n00bs. Tongue I'll probably have a better idea as soon as I talk to people IRL and set up my cellular data/Internet access on my phone. The telco needs to get its stuff together! Mad

  • posted a message on PLOS Rebranding and Academic Journals
This is mainly for those "nerds" (I mean this in jest and with love) and academics, but what are your views, if any, on the rebranding of PLoS (Public Library of Science)?

Quote from David Knutson, 23 July 2012 »
    http://www.webcitation.org/69j2pzKwV
You may have noticed some visual changes to PLOS. Given our growth, it was necessary to provide our well-known logo with a long overdue refresh. We’ve simplified the “globe”, made it scaleable and modernized the typeface of our logo—small changes that make it easier for people to read and provide options for use in a variety of settings (both on and offline), today and in the future.
We have previously organized our journals according to subject areas (Medicine, Biology, and Interdisciplinary, i.e., PLOS ONE) and are now are taking the opportunity to give distinctive accent colors to each of these. Furthermore, we are capitalizing “PLOS” to address community feedback regarding the difficulty with consistent pronunciation and writing our organization’s name. We will continue to put the name “PLOS” on everything that we do to show our presence and consistency as a nonprofit organization founded on the aim to build a “public library of science”.
Thank you for supporting PLOS and our mission to transform research communication.

I think it's easier to type when I type it but it's also sort of ugly-looking.

On the note of academic journals, to which do you subscribe? Any faves? I personally like big-name journals for what are likely obvious reasons and those to do with my field of interest, which I unfortunately cannot disclose.

What sorts of apps are you looking for?

I have all of my files stored in Dropbox,
Updated the original post. As soon as I sign up for data, I'll consider these; but, at the moment, I'm without Internet access.

Considering the future of computing is basically all in the Web, it really doesn't matter all that much what my phone itself can do or has on it as soon as I ring my telco and request data (and agree to associated charges); or, so I jest.

"bu.mp" is worth considering if I'm at a meeting, gathering, conference, seminar, etc. ... and très lazy.
and access them with the Dropbox app and GoodReader.
Good reader's dear, by which I mean it costs a non-zero amount.
For word processing I use iA Writer.
Again, not free. Frown I can pay it but I'm a cheapskate.
What other kinds of things are you looking for?
I don't know honestly. What can apps do?

Info and stuff glut; there's too much out there. I might have a better idea from choosing than listing, tbh.

Online review sites have recommended a number of apps, but other than being highly repetitive and sometimes painful (for example, not another recommendation for Twitter), but one app that frequently pops up in lists is "Simplenote".

Can it be shown that he's not receiving a benefit by using prostheses? That having to carry less weight, use less energy, etc. isn't an advantage to a runner?
    How Suspicious...

What are you on about/what are you going on about?
It sucks that he doesn't have full legs.
    Yes.
It's awesome that he's able to function at the level that he is.
    How Suspicious...
I still don't think he should be competing in the Olympics in running.
Yes, though I don't think he should be competing any sport in which his prostheses have any* role in the actual activity (golf, for example, would be fine; running in the Olympics and Paralympics are both noes).

*Surely you understand what I mean.
    Quote from Cervid
He should be allowed to compete in the paralympics[sic].
I wasn't specific before but now I'll be more specific; I disagree with this.
There's no way to ensure that these prostheses are not conferring an advantage,
Yes. I don't know why you've misconstrued my post, granted I wasn't being specific as to that point of yours with which I disagree, and then proceeded to badger me with a random line of argument.
    Quote from Belgareth
This. It's too much of a slippery slope and really goes against the intention of the olympics[sic] as a proving ground for the highest acheivement[sic] in human excellence.
Otherwise where do you draw the line.
    I would agree with this.
    Quote from Highroller
That being said, didn't he fail to qualify twice before ultimately qualifying?
    And?

The issue is more fundamental than the impact of the prostheses, or at least it is to me.
    Quote from Highroller »
I know the Olympic Committee banned a swimsuit that caused unfair advantage, and I believe they initially banned Pistorius before allowing him to compete. So it's clear that they are taking these things under review.
To use the cliché, that's apples and oranges.

    Quote from dcartist
Personally I was for inclusion of Casey Martin and using a cart on the PGA tour, because I don't believe that walking 5 miles at a leisurely pace constitutes a significant component of the athletic competition of golf (Casey had a disease that made his leg very fragile and subject to severe problems if he walked around a lot on it, but he could walk, stand, and play golf just fine). The tour was better off making the accommodation and not looking like a bunch of *******s.
KTS. The Smashing Pumpkins frontman also has it.

This is most definitely a different set of circumstances from that of Pistorius, though.

But PGA tour, and some pro golfers were up in arms about the "purity" and "athleticism" of the sport, and I wanted to hit them over the head. I was definitely all for "Just let the guy freaking use a cart. He's gaining no "competitive advantage". To me that was definitely an example of "reasonable accommodation" that would not ruin the sport, but only improve it by having A guy like Casey allowed to play. Truly a "level playing field".
I agree with the "let the guy use a cart" but I don't know much about golf and its tourneys.

Maybe it's not but, to me, the game is simply hitting a ball into a hole and not suffering too much from heat-related disorders. From my uninformed understanding of golf and the competitive game of golf, being an athlete of any particular variety isn't a matter or necessity in either.
    Quote from Cervid
He should be allowed to compete in the paralympics, but not the olympics. There's no way to ensure that these prostheses are not conferring an advantage, and I can think of several reasons to think why they might, which have been mentioned previously in this thread.

It's awesome that he's able to run like he is, but I think he should be awesome in the paralympics.
    I disagree.

Think about it; leg prostheses for track and variations among prostheses. (Sidebar if you will: Is there even Paralympic running? I know there is wheelchair racing.)
