I voted for something else, I don't think Green should have an iconic creature type. Green really should have a fatty that reflects the setting the of the set it appears in, any one of the examples listed works in a given setting and magic has reasons for the other iconic types so why worry about it.

I dunno if Baneslayer Angel compensates for not having Double Dragon....

I'm going to work Sign in Blood into my deck....its like a mini Harmonize - a minimonize!

It doesn't by itself but its fairly easy to stall with it until I can cast to a hellkite, which gives me a better chance at racing with another ramp deck game 1. Before m10, it was pretty much, either hope for a wrath or resolve a primal first, againist jund ramp now I can be more aggressive.

wheres your path to exiles! I like the list, ut I wonder how important having volcanic fallout and Firespout are, both I think aren't needed.

I would cut one and up martial coup by 1 and add in some paths.

I also like how your replacing actual CA with planeswalkers, very smart.

Although I do think that Elspeth is much better than sarkhan vol right now.

I don't like path in ramp too much, againist five color control and other ramp decks it can backfire pretty bad, againist aggro I rely on the board clearers to take care of the little guys though I may mess with the ratio, but I like having both because fallout is amazing againist faeries which always seems to stick around, and spout for kithkin which get out of fallout range in a hurry. That said the deck is definately going to go through some changes soon, part of the reason that i'm running Naya ramp is I think it will handle the lorwyn rotation better (if ramp can, losing fertile ground, primal command, and finks is gonna hurt) I'm going to experiment with a mix of earthquake (allows me to run birds of paradise) and volcanic fallout.

I like sarkhan vol a little better then elspeth as a 1-of. I think it plays a little nicer with martial coup and the threaten ability has proved to be very useful.

Austere command is pretty solid but i like martial coup better it usually breaks the game in my favor, I think if I didn't run knight of the reliquary it would be better choice though just because its faster.

Elspeth, knight-errant is really good, but I don't run her in my builds because I feel that my build needs chandra for repeatable removal (I think lightning bolt makes her better then angry ajani, cause she can take one)

this is the current Naya build im working on....

Its a little slow, but once it stablizes it gains life very quickly, hellkite + baneslayers as finishers really makes up for not having broodmate dragon, it really could use some more card draw though.

What? Incinerate rotates out the same day it comes in. Wink

I thought they changed it so that the core sets would rotate in october with the next expansion block so tenth would be legal until Zen.

I will admit I missed that disclaimer but regardless in my mind it still makes the card not a functional reprint.

Human as a creature type isn't effected by any where near as many cards, as the creature type elf is. Even though the ability is the same, the new ranger gains no benefit from an elvish archdruid if it were a civic wayfinder it would become better if both were in play. This new ranger cannot serve the same function that civic wayfinder does in an elf deck because it doesn't have the same characterics that elves do namely a relevent type, it can't be a 3/3 beater simply by being in play with imperious perfect so it can't be a functional reprint imo.

Another issue as far as pricing is concerned is whether or not most people are going to drop the same amount of money, for cards that rotate on a yearly basis, I expect the duals and walkers to be fairly consistent in m-- sets but I doubt the other chase rares are going to reach the same prices.

    1. Civic Wayfinder -> Borderland Ranger - I wouldn't consider this a functional reprint, bottom line is wayfinder is an elf and that is an important distinction.

I would add Cudgel Troll to the poll its gonna be really good once incinerate rotates although it does really make me wish another troll had made the cut.

I really don't mind this set too much, I think a lot of people lost sight of the fact that even with the big changes promised at the end of the day it was still going to be a core set. The general powerlevel seems to be up a little but a lot of that is simply because its smaller so a higher percentage of it is going to be playable. The functional reprints seem kinda lame, but they want limited to be fun, so civic wayfarer might might elves a bit to strong in tribal.

My main concern is with singles prices, I don't really want to pay much more then 5-10 bucks for a good rare in a set that rotates out every year, and I don't like mythics like elspeth that kill my wallet so I am afraid of one popping up in a core set.

    From best to worst

Red - lightning bolt, ball lightning, hellkite are all great, and I think the magma phoenix is being overlooked, plus the new goblin chieftain who looks pretty good (it does kinda irk me that goblin one drop already has haste but thats nitpicking) adds up to one mean color.

White - really tough soldier tribe with enough cards to maybe make it viable in constructed, no wraith but White shouldn't want one with this set (martial coup on the other hand?) all the angels look decent so they should cause some problems. A good amount of flexible spells, its amazing how fast white got good again.

After this it becomes a lot less clear, green and black are really close imo, Green has fairly good creatures but not much else, and black is pretty much the opposite, if black had a board clearer It would have been then better color.

Green - I think green is really solid I would have like some more card draw effects (really anything besides elvish visionary to be honest), but it got some nice tools, Cudgel Troll is going to be pretty good after tenth rotates regeneration is going to be a lot better, Acidic slime, birds, new elf lord, stable stag, llanowar elves, Mold adder (sideboard), and nature's spiral all have a good chance of seeing constructed play and even ant queen has a chance.

Black - Good discard, two interesting tribes I have to be honest I really don't care for a mythic tribal lord card it just bugs me though vampires are better then zombies so I see why wizards did it I just don't like it. Lots of decent utility spells, good removal though they will have some problems with creatures that Regenerate. It doesn't really have any bomb creatures though besides the new lord of the pit but even then.

Blue - Really didn't seem to have much of a theme or splashy cards, merfolk where pretty underwhelming. sleep may be decent but overall blue got sucker punched.

  • posted a message on [M10] What rares from 10th are staying?
I have to admit I'm fairly interested in m10 as well, that said I expect for them to reprint a least a few cards at every rarity that make us raise an eyebrow like upwelling or might of oaks cause they like having a few crappy rares (spikewise) for each color. What I hope happens is that they use m10 as a bridge between shards, and zen (forgot how to spell it :p), which would explain birds staying in to fix mana, and also cause wizards doesn't totally hate me (hopefully they keep troll ascetic as well, cause he might see a little play once lorwyn rotates). If thats the case we might see some repreints that we never expected and it might feel completely different from any core we've seen before and maybe weathered wayfarer will be back.

I like the snake dude, does look like a Vedalken with a python rapped around her + the snake's eyes are blue. no enemy wedges does leave the question of what the color this is (it really looks UG ), Vedalkens getting out of the Sphinx/ Blue Sphere and becoming like Momir Vig perhaps? Coiling Oracle does come to mind, I do think a similar ability only with an ARB name and creature type Vedalken Shaman maybe? It's gotta be green, maybe the snake has charmed the Vedalken? I would like to see that. Also, Mystic Snake could be it too.

I think I would like mystic snake or coiling oracle reprint over just about anything else they could print, and the art reminds of mystic snake so now im really hoping for it.

I agree with urzassedatives its too early to predict the meta. That said I think spell breaker may find a home in Naya ramp deck, where broodmate isn't an option and may allow for some bigger threats because you don't have to worry as much about remove soul, it also makes threshers even better againist faeries. It also wouldn't suprise me to see a deck after rotation, that goes, t1 bird, t2 woolly thoctar, t3 spellbreaker, t4 cliffrunner behemoth.

Its definately going to into my mayeal EDH deck, I love how many people are excited about it just for that format.

as long as there are creatures in standard, fallout will see play.

im sure fallout is not the worst vs martial coup either... (the 2nd sweeper to stay after rotation, other is scourglass)

don't forget infest, as as the new knight, I think it might see play but not until lorwyn rotates, then maybe it'll show up, but even then the mana fixing is going to be interesting.

wow, I really like this card. Not as good as Broodmate but hey thats ok I stll like this card. It's interesting to say the least, and hell its a fun finisher for Block or Kaleodoscope. Best part is that it's a dragon token maker that doesn't require blue and a bunch of tokens or extra red to make one token. 4/4 is great and the potential to make 3/3 or bigger (probably better off sticking to 3/3s) it's certianly going to be fun. Heck throw this in with Sarhkan Vol and this card can become really brutal. Wish it had a little hint of black in it so it could see more competitive play but I'm sure someone realized that if it had black in it people would start thinking of ways to making it a staple.

Yeah its just below curve in standard which is nice because I don't want to be a staple cause it looks like a lot of fun and more of a power multiplayer card. It and sarken are really nasty together though, its a card that I think may be playable after lorwyn rotates out, (I could see a ramp deck running, this, and broodmate)

    Quote from DanceofMany
I like this card. Jund tokens is actually starting to look pretty viable once Lorwyn rotates out, especially since it uses green, the color of mana ramp.

Let's say you accel into this even 1 turn early and drop it on T5. On T6, you have a 4/4 flyer and 2 1/1 (possibly 3/3) flyers, and will have 2 more every turn after, plus you get the first one during your opponent's turn, giving you an immediate chump blocker if needed. Me likey.

yeah I expect for jund ramp to be tough for a while, though broodmate dragon is still going to be the finisher of choice for it. Im really curious to see if fertile ground ends up in m10 cause if so mana ramp is going to have a chance of being tier 1.

    Quote from BLu
I´m wondering what led to R&D making a (mostly) red card that is simply better than Verdant Force.

Well red gets lots of token production so its not that suprising, it'll be interesting to see if green gets an updated verdant force at a comparable powerlevel cause 6 mana for a 4/4 flier, with flying tokens is quite a bit better.

    Quote from jethier
I say Broodmother dragon is a damn good card. In any deck with mana ramp she comes out early. Keep in mind you get a token EVERY upkeep, so you can attack with the token that comes into play during your opponents upkeep. More over, you could sac the token from your opponent's upkeep to the one on your upkeep to net a 2/2 flier every turn. No drawback either! It's like a fixed Bitterblossom of sorts.

well 3/3 flier, but yeah its good I just don't see as a better finisher then broodmate (I know you didn't say that I just want to point it out), its better in the long term, but worse in the short term. For example if I cast a broodmate, and my opponent has a celestial purge, he still has to worry about one 4/4 flier, whereas in the broodmate situation he is going to more than likely trade straight up. if he doesn't have an answer I can swing with 2 4/4's, with a dragon broodmother I can swing with her and a 1/1 which is not as scary. granted if she lives for more then three turns chances are your opponent doesn't have a chance.
