It has certainly been a while since I've shared my decklist progress.
This is the Animar list I've converted for a French 1v1 league. (Which I am conquering btw.) It is breakneck fast and is still fairly viable in multiplayer.
I would just have to remove some of the less legal cards for normal multiplayer games, prime time for example.
I'm personally eyeballing Illusory Ambusher. Instant speed card draw on a creature... Potentially for 1 mana? Yes please!
The thing is, I'd rather have a draw spell that is proactive instead of reactive. I ran Consecrated Sphinx in an earlier listing and then you realize that you have to let your opponent play and potentially mess you up just to get extra cards. Meanwhile, you could just play Slithermuse/Mull Drifter/whatever and draw cards during your turn and increase your options.
Just my two cents.
I wonder what you guys think of the new Ezuri card? It wouldn't be hard to rack up a lot of experience counters with discounted creatures and have him act as an alternate Xenagos that provides further discounts (the +1/+1 counters would remain on Animar after combat phase, right?).
In my experience, if an Eldrazi isn't outright counterspelled, it is exiled/unsummoned before it even has a chance to swing. I'm basing my opinion solely on it's ETB effect since you can just bounce it constantly and remove the whole board in a few bounces. Also exile > destroy.
2.0 does a better job of clearing the board and unless you're super scared of being milled to death if Kozilek ends up being exiled or whatever, I can't see why you'd run both.
I run Painter's Servant specifically to protect Animar as I always name Black or White. I can see the appeal of naming Blue but I wouldn't sacrifice protection for one card. Also, the 2C cost fits nicely in my curve.
I haven't seen Animar Duel decks run any of those cards to be honest. I'm assuming it's because those specific combo pieces can't easily be tutored. Here's a list of the top winning Duel Animar decks http://www.mtgtop8.com/archetype?a=313 - most listings use a variant of Jester's Imperial Animar (I mix goodstuff and Imperial).
I started playing MTG last year and started crafting my first EDH deck in feb '14, which was heavily based on Gelf's Animar build. It has, of course, evolved a lot since then, especially since I switched to playing Duel Commander almost exclusively. My listing can be found here : http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/18-01-15-edh-animar-cry-me-a-*******-river/ (Do note that I'm running an illegal card - Painter's Servant - in regular Commander).
Compared to Gelf's deck, I focus a lot more on combo pieces (Kiki + Deceiver/Zealous/Pestermite etc) and I ditched a lot of mana expensive big creatures in favor of smaller, ramping critters like Bond Beetle. I also run more control spells and protection.
Just wanted to say thanks Gelf for making the thread, I had a lot of fun with this guy and hopefully I'll help with the discussion in the future.
I run a very similar 1v1 deck myself, the only obvious card you're missing is Imperial Recruiter, which is pretty much essential in Animar.
