Mardu midrange would be a decent option. It's a solid midrange deck that has the best removal in the game good creatures like Dark Confidant and Kalitas and also Lingering Souls to fight grindy decks. It's not the best midrange option mostly because it lacks good threat to close the game like Tarmogoyf but otherwise it's a pretty solid deck.
Maybe he doesn't know where to find a good list? Google Patrick Chapin Modern Grixis and you should find something sweet. $1,100 is probably doable with some smart shopping.
