The mana disruption sometimes works great, but other times they just always have another land. I have really noticed how unlike real life the shuffling is online, I can go through 35 cards of my deck and find 0 paths and verdicts, or find all of them in the first 15 cards. Same thing with my opponents, I notice them playing full playsets of things in the first 5 turns of the game so often it ridiculous. The best thing about field of ruin for me is filtering out all the basics in my deck while dealing with a problematic opponent's land, even with 24 lands flooding loses me a lot of games.
I went 4-1 with the Elspeth, Knight-Errant / Geist of Saint Traft package in the main last night, Elspeth was awesome and I only lost to a mono red blood moon deck where I just couldn't find a basic besides 2 plains in game 3. I did play the dream turn 3 Geist into turn 4 Elspeth once, but Elspeth just by herself won a couple matches. I like how both her abilities are +1 unlike Gideon AOZ and a 1/1 chump blocker against a 10/10 death's shadow is just as good as a 2/2. One game I just took 15 damage in 1 attack instead of blocking because her +3/3 flying along with my colonnade was lethal after that.

Oct 19, 2017Lots of first time posters lately I would take your first list -1x Negate, Cryptic, and Supreme Will +1 Search for Azcanta, Mana Leak or Logic Knot, Sphinx Rev. If the Elspeth works out for you then leave her for now. Also I'd try a 2/2 Tec Edge Field of Ruin split, I'm currently on 3 Field 1 Tec.Posted in: Tier 1 (Modern)
Oct 18, 2017Time was definitely a problem when I was playing in paper, but since I've been playing online so much I've gotten to the point where I always have more time than my opponents. Always think about the various possibilities for you next turn or your opponents turn. I think if and when I go back to playing more in paper I will play a lot faster than I used to, but even then you have to share the clock with your opponent, and you may have to take riskier plays than you would online to avoid draws.Posted in: Tier 1 (Modern)
In regards to Gideon Jura I've probably won way more games not by attacking with him, but by forcing opponent to tap down and then swing in on my turn. If Jura can survive more than 1 turn or is coupled with a Jace is when he's at his best, but in combo matches you're probably dead before you play him or dead if you tap out for him. I still really like Elspeth also and would like to have her in the 75, but things are too fast lately, and I'm not sold on cutting Jura either.
Oct 18, 2017I think Grafdigger, RIP and Surgical can all kind of fill the same spot. Runed Halo is also good in those spots against Storm and Valakut especially. I agree that 3 Gideon of the Trials is probably 1 too many, I don't know what it is, but with just 2 in the deck I never fail to find at least 1 of them per game. On the other hand sometimes when I have all 4 verdicts post board I still can't find onePosted in: Tier 1 (Modern)
So Kerrick's recent deck runs really smooth, I screwed up against some weird BG Eldrazi deck that was super heavy on graveyard interaction, but wasn't in game 1 so I didn't bring in RIPs and lost. I also lost to Gaea's Revenge again, and really wished I had a blessed alliance or maybe it's correct to leave a couple verdicts in against scapeshift these days.
Oct 17, 2017Thanks guys! I didn't notice that there were only the 2 GoTTs at first either and was thinking you could end up running out of ways to kill your opponent. I could see decks with abrupt decay being an issue, but I suppose you bring in quellers against them? What about switching wall #3 for secure the wastes? I only tested secure a couple times and it felt strong and flexible and also a good snap target in the long game.Posted in: Tier 1 (Modern)
I also tend to play extremely cautious, probably gets me killed sometimes when I could go for a kill but instead sit back and do nothing. I also hold on to cryptic command forever sometimes when there are situations that maybe I should just counter a low impact spell and draw, or bounce a land, but I try to get max value out of it.
I played against classic Jund a couple times recently and I kept bringing in all 4 verdicts and then remembered it's really just a control deck without blue and they don't run many threats so I think that's a match where you probably want 0 verdicts actually? Abzan or BG usually run a lot more creatures so 4 verdicts is probably right for those. It's easy to forget that you don't really have to sideboard much sometimes, I was better at light sideboarding in paper where it takes longer to look through your deck and time is limited.
Oct 16, 2017Looks good, I will give it a shot because I've been having some bad luck lately. Why do you prefer the 2 cages and 1 RIP, and Pulse of the Fields over Timely? I have been struggling against some of the CoCo combo decks recently especially the Knight retreat and infinite combo ones, so another cage makes sense, but it's so overpriced online... I swear against combo decks they always get nut draws at least 1 game against me and then I probably don't mulligan aggressively enough and just keep hands that are regularly good. I worry about mulling a hand with like 3 lands and turn 1-3 plays to just try to hit a hate card.Posted in: Tier 1 (Modern)
Do you have a specific board plan against most decks? I still have a tough time deciding if I should cut Gideons, Jaces and the situational counters against certain decks.
Edit: I guess some of the mid-range decks like Abzan / Jund or random other things like UR Young Pyromancer Blood Moon are some of the ones I'm talking about. The plan for things like storm is pretty straight forward, yet still the most difficult to win.
Oct 15, 2017Seems like the kind of deck that would want 1 Ajani Vengeant I could play something like this, I like that it doesn't use a full playset of tarns. Is this in the SCG open? Haven't been able to watch much and I'm out tonight.Posted in: Tier 1 (Modern)
Oct 14, 2017Haven't tried settle the wreckage yet, but anything that wrecks bogles is good in my book. I wish Kerrick or Benny's lists would ever get posted on the daily 5-0 decklists. I need to just pick a solid deck and stick with it for awhile instead of changing so many cards all the time.Posted in: Tier 1 (Modern)
Oct 11, 2017@Kerrick I've had matches where I don't see a geist game 1 and then get killed by it game 2, it's just so hard to deal with if it resolves. I've tried taking out all the verdicts and just plan to counter it, but that has failed me a few times also when they wait until turn 4 and have a dispel. Is your recent list still about the same as before? I'm doing really well in friendly leagues with mine still, barely missed 5-0 yesterday cause of horrible draws against dredge.Posted in: Tier 1 (Modern)
Settle the Wreckage seems really intriguing and I think I'm going to give it a shot in place of 1 of the verdicts. Great for manlands, PWs and those chains of reality smashers tron players always have.
Oct 10, 2017@YuzhouJ Jeskai Queller is a tough match, I've beaten it a fair amount of times, but I still don't have a complete plan against it. Their snaps are more valuable than ours so I think RIP and Cage are good, it's hard to decide how many verdicts and paths to leave in. Wall of Omens, Planeswalkers and Spreading Seas are all kinda iffy even though they are a 3 color deck it's hard to really color screw them. I usually end up leaving in 2-3 verdicts and Spreading Seas, maybe 1 Wall and bring in Counters, Geist, life gain and GY hate. I'd like to figure out a more "correct" strategy against them myself.Posted in: Tier 1 (Modern)
Oct 10, 2017@Nekat I'm like 20+ and 1 against Death's Shadow in the past couple months, I remember the one match I lost to abysmal land flooding... I mostly agree with Jayjay and Cody except I don't take out any cryptics. I just take out all counters that aren't cryptic and bring in 4th sweeper, 2 rips and blessed alliance. In your case you also have Celestial Purge and Condemn which gives you 2 other good cards. So probably -3 mana leak, negate, 1 jace, 1 snap. +BA, Purge, Condemn, 2x RIP, WOGPosted in: Tier 1 (Modern)
I think you should really add a Gideon Jura to your mainboard though, you can afford to take out the seachrome coast IMO and I would probably change prairie stream into Island #5, I've been running fine with 24 lands.
I still have the most trouble boarding against things like Vizier Company and really fast creature combo decks. Sometimes I take out mana leak and negate because they ALWAYS have a turn 1 noble and mana leak becomes dead fast, but then again you might just need to counter their turn 2-3 plays to slow them down a tiny bit. Spreading Seas is another card that could maybe be cut against them since they have mana dorks, chord and coco so they aren't too worried about colors as long as they have 1 or 2 green. These kind of matches are also the ones where I'm uncertain on how many PWs to leave in or out, GoTT isn't good against a swarm of creatures, but he can buy you some time or end up being a win con later. Eternal Witness and Finks are annoying too, but not sure if it's worth using RIP for them unless they are using Knight of the Reliquary.
Oct 8, 2017I just went with a 3-1 Field / Tec Edge split (mainly because I only had enough saved credit for 3) and had my first 5-0 in awhile. Played against Jeskai Queller, E-Tron twice, Mardu Burn, Titanshift, and only lost 1 game against Jeskai Queller. Field was super great against Tron and I top decked one when I really needed it vs Valakut, it actually worked great against burn too cutting him off white and black. One game vs tron I played turn 3 crucible, started recurring a Field and soon I had a Jace, Elspeth and Gideon on the board and he had nothing.Posted in: Tier 1 (Modern)
Here's my current decklist which I'm pretty happy with... Gideon AOZ has been a game winner recently for me, I'm not cutting him again. He single handedly won my last 2 burn matches, playing him on a board with Eidolon is stupid good.

Oct 8, 2017Haha that image made me laugh, poor tec edge I'm about to give Field a try, the more I think about it I think I will really like it. Being able to fetch a basic to replace it seems amazing and most decks will run out of basics before us. Not sure if I should just go all in with 4 or some kind of split...Posted in: Tier 1 (Modern)
Oct 7, 2017I like the 4 opt, but 2 sphinx rev and 2 AOZ without any GoTT is really weird, although I can't really talk because I couldn't win a match yesterday. I was doing pretty well with 4 opts a couple days ago, then yesterday I switched back to a more Benny list with 4 SV and lost like 8/10 matches. Nothing but combo, I got turn 3'd by Elves, Vizier company, Knightfall Retreat which I forgot existed, storm a bunch of times... pretty awful day. I had this crazy idea of switching all the verdicts to the sideboard and mainboarding spell quellers and the 1 geist and clique, because at least recently verdict has been too little too late half the time for me.Posted in: Tier 1 (Modern)
