Boreez posted a message on IGN Spoilers - Nicol Bolas, Dragon God, Deliver Unto Evil, The ElderspellThe Elderspell, broken? Are you kidding me? Your opponent needs to have 2+ planeswalkers in play for this to be card advantage, and even so, they'll already have gotten at least 2 effects out of those walkers, which may very well negate the card advantage.Posted in: The Rumor Mill
On top of that, it's double black, meaning that it's a hoser card with a restrictive mana cost.
Jesus, the overreactions on this subforum. -

When this card is seeing even legacy play, its hard for the other potential late game control stuff to compete as Teferi is so far above it all that the alternatives are just a joke.
I think banning Teferi in Standard would be a huge mistake. It would more or less put control type decks way out of the format's top tier decks and I think that's a bad move since the current meta has a bit of everything running around the top of the field. So why remove one when the format is "healthy"? Teferi isn't overpowered and a lot of the time he hits the board it's just trying to stall the opponent more than win.
I don't get why people want to ban strong cards just because they're being played in other formats too. Everybody wants their decks to be strong and have strong cards, but people start yelling for bans when there's an actual strong card.
I really don't think Teferi has any warrant for a ban in Standard and to be honest I don't really think any legal card in standard is could get banned right now since the format is rather weak to be honest.
(Sorry for double post.... I suck with the quote thing here)
WOTC would be loathe to ban Walkers cause they are expensive. As for Teferi what is funny is this is Teferi with the restraints on cause Maro fully admitted they made sure not to print much that is good for Teferi in Azorius. Just imagine Teferi in a set with Supreme Verdict and Sphinx's Revelation.
Still I think its fine the state of standard is strong. -

Hell yes. After several times of having my Selesnya aggro creatures deafened, contempted, cast down, countered, etc. I finally built a Gruul deck with Rythm of the Wild and 4 Vine Mares, 4 Gruul Spellbreaker in the MD and some proper company and went undefeated. Monoblack recursion, Grixis control, Jeskai control and Sultai midrange were ran over by hasty uncounterable hexproof mares.
*yeah there were other shenanigans in play, but whatevs, control had to learn its place (yes, I was salty).
On topic, yeah a reign of 3-color goodstuff was my first thought when Ravnica was announced. I would ask for the return of Blood Moon but by now even a significant portion of the players get mad when they lose to the card and consider it unfair. I hope the third set brings at least something akin to Anathemancer but don't hold my breath. -

canman87 posted a message on Why does blue have the best aggro deck, the best control deck and the best combo deck?Saying you've played since the mid '90s doesn't do anything to help your argument ( for the record I've played since '98 myself, since that seems to matter to you). If anything, you should have learned how to play against blue cards in all that time, so in my opinion you probably aren't playing correctly in a lot of your matchups. It isn't really like the archetypes you're complaining about play all that much differently than their historical analogues have, so a lot of the lessons you (should have) learned from playing back then are still relevant.Posted in: Standard (Type 2)
Just as there is a complicated strategy involved in playing around Wrath of God, you need to learn how to play against blue cards and in particular things like counterspells. For example, in this Standard format and the few directly preceding it, it is often correct to play into a counterspell when your opponent plays their fourth land and says go. You want this be a card they actively want to stop you from resolving so they don't just ignore it and EoT draw some cards; make them have to choose. You won't always be able to force their hand, but this is an example of a window of opportunity you have to apply pressure in a meaningful way. You might be able to cause them to miss land drops and have to play awkwardly for the next turn or two.
That's obviously just one scenario and there are many more to consider, but aside from that... play better decks and play better in general. I could sit here and write a novel about the things you can do that would be effective against me as a primarily blue-based control player, but I'll spare you from that. Just don't get mad that whatever brew you're working on is being bested by decks that have millions of hours of refinement invested in them by the majority of the player base. Blue is a very strong color and for most of Magic's existence that's been true, but it isn't unbeatable. -

Settle the Wreckage ramps Sultai into bigger Hydroid Krasis
Even Jeskai Control is not viable right now.
If you want to play control, you would be better suited to play Esper, Grixis, or even straight UB

Also, this deck probably does not want a three cmc counter. Negate and disdainful stroke would be my choice.
Overall the deck looks pretty cool.
How many activations are you getting from Lazav?
Oh and if you dont want to go all in on vraska's Contempt then Murder may be a nice choice.
You could also add Arguel's Blood fast in the side for control matchups

The concept of B Orzhov Control W [Black/White] is designed around Kaya's Wrath
The restrictive mana cost of Kaya's Wrath and simplicity of two tone mana offers a straight forward painless land base.
BW otpions include premium removal. A tap-out style as an alternative from draw-go blue based counter spell control. Strong against a creature heavy environment. Shifts into an offense based strategy post board against blue based control. Freedom to play more liberally on YOUR turn.
Here is my current working and testing list:
4x Treasure Map
4x Seal Away
2x Cast Down
2x Moment of Craving
4x Mortify
4x Kaya's Wrath
4x Vraska's Contempt
3x The Eldest Reborn
4x Karn, Scion of Urza
Creatures
3x Angel of Grace
1x Lyra Dawnbringer
Land
1x Orzhov Guildgate
2x Detection Tower
4x Godless Shrine
4x Isolated Chapel
7x Plains
7x Swamp
The Cards of Orzhov Control:
Mortify: All purpose killer that doubles as premium answer to Rhythm of the Wild, Wilderness Reclamation and Search for Azcanta.
Kaya's Wrath: The best argument to go straight BW in a simple to cast turn four destroy all creatures nuclear blast.
Kaya, Orzhov Usurper Stablizes against creature attacks gaining us life and forcing a response from the enemy. Kaya also removes recurring threats from the graveyard like GutterBones, Arclight Phoenix, and anything Find // Finality may want.
However, Kaya interferes with The Eldest Reborn. So you will most likely not want both in your strategy.
The Eldest Reborn: Functionally a planeswalker. Removing enemy combatants. Hand disruption. Returns combatants to our side of the fight.
Karn, Scion of Urza: A turn four planeswlaker with high starting loyalty that helps find cards. And can immediately put creatures in battle to attack or defend.
Treasure Map: without blue mana, this artifact provides the draw and filtering. Doubles as synergy with Karn.
Angel of Grace Supreme finisher. Turns the tide quickly. Grace does not have to be flashed in only when you are facing lethal. An EOT Grace followed by Dawnbringer Angel is such a big swing that it may even be worth playing second Lyra main deck.
Detection Tower: Shrinks those hexproof green monsters. And renders dive down inept.
The Sidboard of Orzhov Control
The strategy shifts into offense against blue based control opponents with the following from the sideboard
Other aggressive options can include Adanto Vanguard and History of Benalia
Note: All online testing performed on XMage best of 3

4x Kaya's Wrath is killer. Been running them in BW Control.

Over in the UBx Control thread, someone mentioned Kaya, Orzhov Usurper and Consecrate // Consume. After testing against mono red aggro and mono white aggro, I can confirm these cards help you stablize your life total.
It would be nice to have both Kaya and Karn in the setup. But Im not sure how to fit both.
Current testing list:
4x Treasure Map
4x Seal Away
2x Cast Down
2x Moment of Craving
4x Mortify
4x Kaya's Wrath
4x Vraska's Contempt
3x Consecrate // Consume
3x Kaya, Orzhov Usurper
Creatures
3x Angel of Grace
2x Lyra Dawnbringer

1x Orzhov Guildgate
