I like resto angel, but I cant see myself playing without Lili and Elspeth XD

And I'm in favor of Sculler, love it, at it's worst its 1x1 taking the enemy removal for a clean Dark confidant

    Hi davemo
I'm building a very similar deck, here I throw you some questions:

Dont you feel you need 1 more land? Just curious, 23 is fine for you?
I own only 3 lilianas, should include a 3c Gideon there or maybe another creature in reemplacement?
If we're going 4 Smuggler's Copter, 3 Liliana of the Veil and 1-4 Collective Brutality (Lots of self-discard) wouldnt be good running something else that likes to be discarded? I only see Lingering souls having some synergy there and that wakes me at night
    Greetings from Argentina!

Are the mid-range Esper list in this thread? Or control only?

Hello everyone, I didnt post for some months in this thread but I keep reading it every week.

I've played Deadguy ale in modern for a long time, at least 3 diferent builds. Last week I was thinking in taking another direction, for fun and to try new cards I tought in splashing a third color...

I know i wanna keep playing Lingering souls, discard spells, and good removal.
So there is Mardu, Esper and Abzan.

Abzan is tier 1 I think, pretty straightforward midrange strategy, I checked some Abzan soul lists, there isnt a single one without goyf so im out.
Mardu looks very nice, you got Bolt, helix, more planeswalkers, and Kolaghan's Command
Esper looks pretty solid too, snapcaster, C.command, Esper charm is beautifull, the new Ancestral vision...

So I decided to try a Esper list, throwed some cards I like and create this:

Its the first time I do not included liliana in my first version of some deck (Im a lili fanboy)
I picked carefully my creatures, hard to kill via protection (4 colores with sword), hexproof, then tokens and snapcaster as the only target for enemy removal.

Please let me know your thoughts...

Some cards I could be missing: Colective brutality, Sorins, Elspeth, Counters?, spell's queller, lots of etc

Hey there, I am playing an Esper midrange version myself for about a year now. First of all, there is a separate Esper thread in the developing competitive section, so you are probably better off posting your list there, but here is some "first aid" advice:

    - First question: What type of game do you want to play? Your list is somewhere between midrange and control. IMO, it is better to dedicate to one strategy. Cryptic command and ancestral vision are both really good cards, but only become powerful in the lategame (even though I see the Cryptic - Geist synergy). If you want more fuel in the lategame, I would add more Esper Charm or look into something like Tasigur, the Golden Fang, both serving an additional purpose (hand disruption respectively more threats). Cryptic also makes your manabase very difficult and painful: You want black on T1 for discard, double white for Crusader or BWU for Charm on T3 and triple blue for Cryptic on T4.

    - If you want to pursue the Geist of Saint Traft and Mirran Crusader midrange plan, both of them literally scream for Elspeth, Knight-Errant. She also works well with Snappies or Shambling Vent. Another interesting card I have yet to test in conjunction with Geist and Crusader is Dusk // Dawn. Probably a sideboard card, though. The equipment package is cute, but probably to slow in most games.
    - If you play Esper Charm, not playing Lili is the right choice I feel. They do not go together well.

    - Counters and Spell Queller are sideboard material against combo and control (at least in a midrange deck). Collective Brutality is really flexible. I play it as a 1of in most of my lists.

    - Another card to consider is Serum Visions. Reduces mulligans, shuffels away useles discard in the lategame, go well with Snaps and Tasigur, etc...

I hope I could help a little Smile

Thanks a lot, I'm still working on the list, will consider all you said
    Could I see yours?
I'm looking for a midrange deck, not control

    Hello DrLockheed!

About the fetch lands. You got: 7 that look for B and 5 W fetchlands
    1 BW
    4 Wu
    4 Bu
    2 Br

Its more than enought, may be painfull if you're unlucky and need to untap 2 shocklands in a row, but its a minor problem.

The big issue is the lack of lilianas, Ive never tested witouth them... Its a dream of a card :p
If i were you, I see 2 directions to take: _Use proxys untill you get 3 lilis.
_ Play it more agressive, with more creatures. If you dont have the doble (1BB) of lili cost, you could run Brimaz and Kitchen finks that cost doble white (1WW)

Of course this is only my opinion may be the guys here have more effective lists and strategies witouth liliana of the veil.
I own 3 lilis. They were my biggest investment in magic, I tought "**** it, i enjoy playing that deadguy deck, and Legacy is more stupid every year" so i sold my unfinished UW miracles and buy them.

I made this very quickly, what i would use:

    Deck: Persecutor midrange

    //Criaturas
    4 Dark Confidant
    3 Abyssal Persecutor
    3 Tidehollow Sculler
    2 Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim
    2 Wasteland Strangler

    //Otros
    3 Inquisition of Kozilek
    3 Thoughtseize
    4 Path to Exile
    4 Lingering Souls
    3 Liliana of the Veil
    2 Sorin, Solemn Visitor
    2 Anguished Unmaking
    1 Victim of Night

    //Tierras
    4 Shambling Vent
    4 Godless Shrine
    4 Marsh Flats
    1 Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
    2 Isolated Chapel
    2 Swamp
    2 Plains
    2 Bloodstained Mire
    3 Ghost Quarter

    Display deck statistics

The first posible problem i see is too many 3 drops and... I would like to include 1 pack rat and 1 zealous persecution, but maybe there is no more room for them

Burn has dissapeared ("Dissapeared", is that a word? sorry for my english) from my meta, one guy who played it left the city, and the other has moved to Jund or Twin..

So Im removing my 4 Kitchen Finks from the deck... in consequence -3 Restoration Angel (Unless I return to Blade Splicers)... Also -4 Kor Firewalker in sideboard

I think i will go to the "Every creature is a must answer" deck.-

    4 Dark Confidant
    2-3 Abyssal Persecutor
    2-3 Pack Rat
    3-4 Tidehollow Sculler
    4 Lingering Souls

    Disruption Pack:
    3 Liliana of the Veil
    4 Path to Exile
    2 Dismember
    0-1 Go for the throat?
    2 Thoughtseize
    3 Inquisition of Kozilek
    1 Duress

    Extra:
    2 Sorin, Solemn Visitor
    2 Zealous Persecution

    Lands: 23 (6 Fetchs, 5 Basics, 2 Mutas, 2 Tectonic, 1 Urborg)

What do you think about that new land in battle for zendikar?:

    Tap: Add colorless mana
4B, Sacrifice this land: Target oponent sacrifices a creature.

So... Who do you think is better for this deck? Sorin, Solemn Visitor or Gideon, Ally of Zendikar?

I dont like the 1 of each one =P

You said a few posts ago that you were testing the shambling vent, how is it?

What would you replace in your list for Drana, Liberator of Malakir?

Yes well, the new manland... I love manlands and we finally see one with my our colors but it didnt work very well, Mutavault is just better in almost all scenarios:

    -Doesnt enter the battlefield tapped.
-Cost only 1 to active instead of 3
    -Hit for the same
    -Blocks and kills Etched Champion

For competitive games, those reasons are more than enought, nevermind, i plan to get 4 of those for fun games, because orzhov still my favorite colors in casual and randoms decks games Smile

Edit: Ah, and for Drana, I still dont know, may be i'll rework all in a diferent deck more token oriented, maybe 2 in for 2 lilianas (those going to the sideboard)

Only a 2/3 actually, dammit. Dies to bolt. Does have lifelink though.

Hey FVN, how are your Burn and Merfolk match ups?

Well, about Burn... It was challenging, i need luck or droop a Kitchen finks in the T3-5, game 2-3 are a bit easier because i have 1 lifegain card in SB and 4 kor firewalker.

And I know there is 1 guy with Merfolk deck around my meta but never face him, so i cant answer for that =P
I'm very prepared with discard + 7-8 spot removals but I dont really know
