    • The Commander tax applies only when you cast your Commander from the Command zone.
    • The Commander tax only counts the number of times your Commander has been cast from the Command zone.
This applies to all Commander casting situations.

    THANK YOU, Merestil!

Remillo is responding to Kryptnyt's complex sequence of card moves by pointing out that, at any point where the Commander moves to either the Graveyard or Exile zone, its owner could stop the sequence dead by putting the Commander in the Command zone.

Ahh, I get it now. Thanks again.

For each time you cast it from the command zone, it costs 2 more to cast from the commander zone. If you cast it once, the next time it would be cast from the command zone, it would cost 2 more. If you cast it from your hand, reanimate it, etc, it would be for normal cost and would not count towards the cost additions.

So far, so good. Thank you.

With Kryptnyt's scenario, assuming you actually let it get destroyed or exiled and not return it to the command zone, it would only cost 2 to cast, assuming all of that ends up happening on the first time you cast it.

Forgive me, but now I'm a little confused. I'll be specific: I'm planning on using Glissa, the Traitor as my commander. She costs BGG, not 2. Let's say I've already cast her once, then I allow her to go to my graveyard instead of back to the command zone when she dies. I then use Disentomb to return her to my hand. When I cast her a second time, this time from my hand, she'll still cost BGG and **NOT** 2BGG, right?

If your commander would be put into a Graveyard or Exile from anywhere, you can choose to put it back in to the command zone. So all of that would stop after the first Exile if the player were to choose that option.

Forgive me for being so slow on the uptake, but when you say "all of that would stop," all of what would stop? Paying 2 more for her, or **NOT** paying 2 more for her?

    Dear forum:

Let's say I'm playing a game of Commander and my commander gets bounced to my hand. Clearly I've already cast it once; in order to cast it from my hand (as opposed to from the command zone), do I still need to pay 2 extra, or can I cast it for its printed casting cost?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Before I knew that some rares were more valuable than others, I traded away 1x Wrath of God (6th Edition) for 3x Pikachu and some Electricity energy (from Pokemon, of course).

Before I knew that Tempest-era and earlier rares also had black expansion symbols, I donated an Ebon Dragon to the commons box. I later saw it in the store's display going for $5.00. D'oh!

  • posted a message on How do two copies of Parallel Lives work?
    Dear forum:

There's a chance this scenario could occur today, so I need to find this out in advance.

Let's say I have two copies of Parallel Lives on the battlefield. If I cast Lingering Souls, do I get six tokens (because each copy of Parallel Lives triggers from the single Lingering Souls), or do I get eight tokens (because one copy of Parallel Lives triggers after the other one does)?

Thanks very much in advance for any help you can give me.

StClaus: Thank you for making the Insect token! That's one more down.

    Quote from Kei Maheara
Why are there spots on the list for tokens of cards/effects that make copies of other cards or themselves? Let me specify. Spawnwrithe makes a token copy of himself. When a token copy of a creature is created, it copies ALL ASPECTS of the copied creature. This means that the token would look exactly like the original card, mana cost and all. There are a few 'named' tokens on the original list that shouldn't be there or (if you just want to list everything that makes tokens) at the very least shouldn't have a token image unless its just a picture of the original card.

That's because tokens have the added property of being immediately removed from the game whenever they go to a zone other than the battlefield. Hence the need to differentiate them from their parent cards.

    EVERYONE ELSE:

This project has been updated to include Avacyn Restored. Enjoy!

As for my personal fav ... I know Ravnica is pretty standard as far as "best land" goes but man, this island! The perspective, the colors, it's just so incredible ...

When you say "this island," to which Island are you referring?

  • posted a message on Teaching Beginning Magic Is Not As Easy As It Looks
I've taught so many people how to play Magic that I've lost count. Here is the method I've settled into:

    1. I first explain that both players are powerful spellcasters, and both start at 20 life. The winner of the game is the one who reduces his opponent's life total to 0 first.
    2. I show them the back of the card and explain that there are five colors of Magic, and each of them does a different thing (White is the magic of protection and defense; green is the magic of nature and balance, etc.). Then I explain that if you look at any color in that design, the two colors next to it are its allies while the two across from it are its enemies, etc.
    3. I tell them that the deck of cards is your "library," while your discard pile is your "graveyard."
    4. I next explain that there are two types of cards: Lands and spells.
    5. I then break down the individual types of lands and spells, showing them where on the card it tells them what it is. I make ABSOLUTELY SURE to tell them that it's okay if they don't memorize all of these right off the bat.
    6. For creatures, I explain what "power" and "toughness" are and demonstrate the numbers you compare when any two creatures meet in combat.
    7. Then I explain what a casting cost is and how it relates to land.
    8. I then show them what "tapping" means, explaining that it's nothing more than an accounting method to show each player what's been used and what's still available for use.
    9. Then I show them the steps that are taken in a turn, in order.
    10. Next I write up a list, showing them what spells can be played during whose turn and during which steps. I give them the list afterward for their reference.
    11. I am careful to explain that the game isn't so much about buying up all the best cards; it's about synergy: Finding out which cards work together to enhance each other's effects. In other words, the idea behind deckbuilding is to make 2 + 2 = 5 or more.
    12. Last of all, I play a sample game with them with both players' hands plainly visible. I walk them through what they can do and advise them what they SHOULD do and inform them why they should do it.
    13. Repeat that last step until the person feels comfortable playing on his or her own with our hands concealed, like normal. Even then, I ALWAYS let him or her take back obvious mistakes and tell him or her why it was a mistake and give them suggestions for better plays. I keep doing this until he or she is comfortable living with his or her mistakes and insists on learning the hard way.
If you're unsure of the best way to teach people Magic, hopefully the above list will come in handy for you.

I just wanted to say that I think this is a wonderful thread/project and I really appreciate all that you (everyone who contributed) have done.

    Thanks!

I enjoy most of the token art, I just wanted to know if maybe you could make printable versions or is there a easy way to do this that I dont know about?

Saving the image to a graphical editing program and then resizing it to the correct proportions is the only thing I can think of.

ALSO, is there a symbol or something you could put beside the tokens that are OFFICIAL artwork?

When there's an official token available, that's the one that's linked.

Finally, whats with the Red XIII token art (can't remember which one is was at the moment)?

I don't know what you mean here.

EDIT: oh yea! forgot to mention, do you ever plan to make different tokens for tokens with the same characterisitics? for example suppose you have something that produces a 1/1 blue flying spirit token from Innistrad, and another that produces a 1/1 blue flying spirit token from a Kamigawa cycle (this is JUSt an example, no specific cards). Although they are basically the same thing they would probably look alot different, with Innistrad's token probably looking more like a "scary" ghost while the token from Kamigawa looking closer to one of the crazy looking Kami. See what I'm saying?

Yes, I see what you're saying. At the end of every bulleted item, look for the "ALTERNATE ART" link and click on it. Voila!

I just appreciate this topic b/c it brings the tokens to life instead of them being represend by boring beads or six-sided dice.

    You're welcome. Smile
