  • posted a message on Prized Amalgam (missed) triggers
    Hi Smile

I'm curious about what happens in the following scenario:

I'm playing Dregde in Modern at FNM.
On my turn I untap, pass through upkeep and then dredge a Life from the Loam.
I mill Mountain, Narcomoeba, Prized Amalgam.
I point to the Narcomoeba, say "trigger" and my opponent passes. I put it on the battlefield.
I then point to the Prized Amalgam and say "delayed trigger".
Then I pass the turn to my opponent (missing the Amalgam at end step).
In his upkeep, I notice that I missed the Amalgam.

    What happens?
The main point I am curious about, is what happens when I announce that Amalgam has a delayed trigger, but then forget about it on end step.

    Thanks in advance.

You can CoCo during your opponent's end step so that the time that would have hit the trigger to lose Groundbreaker that turn has already passed, so it would hang around until your own end step and get a swing in.

It is an unfortunate nonbo with the desire to cast CoCo to create surprise blockers during your opponent's combat phase, though.

If we consider all cards as having a "stat-budget", where the stats, abilities and keywords on any given card have to match up to the cost of the card (mana+other costs) then we quickly realize that having haste is a keyword that is paid for in the "stat-budget". Compare Boggart Ram-Gang to Leatherback Baloth for an approximation of the cost of haste (yes it also has wither, which muddles the picture a bit). However with Collected Company you are not maximizing the usefulness of haste, since casting it on your opponent's end step gives your creatures pseudo-haste anyway. So in overloading on haste creatures you are paying full price for keywords that you don't always use to full effect.

I would run something like this list for company:

I have run a list similar (mainly leatherback baloth over Steel Leaf) before with some decent success.

Groundbreaker limits the use of Collected Company to being cast in your own main phase. Part of the appeal of Collected Company is that it lets you play around board wipes. Overloading on haste creatures limits that effect and playing one-shot damage sources, like Groundbreaker, works directly against it.

I haven't been able to formulate a T3 kill and frankly I don't think it's possible unless the opponent aggressively fetches and shocks, in which case they're removing our creatures, and we're not getting the T3 kill anyways. Even a hand with 1 E1, 4 Geists and an Aspect is a T4 kill.

A turn three kill is in fact possible, but it is highly unlikely and takes you down a very unintuitive path. It looks something like this:

    T1: Forest, Dryad Militant
T2: Forest, Rancor, Rancor, attack for 6 (opponent at 14)
T3: Forest, Rancor, Aspect, Aspect, attack for 16 (opponent at -2)

As you can see, this line of play requires 9 cards. That's your opening 7 on the play plus two draws. So this is a pretty exact sequence with little room for variation. The whole thing is also wide open to removal, resulting in a massive blow-out that loses you the game on the spot. So even if I saw this line shaping up in my opening hand, I'd probably mulligan.

Hey Cirnu, thanks for answering my questions. That was some pretty helpful insight into deckbuilding, as well as the card specific stuff. It's a shame my ideas didn't really pan out, but I'm glad that I know early before I start trying to build around them. Thanks again!

No problem at all Smile Deck advice is what this thread is for after all. If you want any further advice feel free to post your current deck list and I'll gladly take a look.

... what do you guys think of Matter Reshaper?
... I'm not sure if that would be enough colorless mana to reliably run it, or how useful it would be. I'd like to hear your thoughts on it!
I was also wondering if someone could let me know where I could find an up to date red splash list. I have a playset of Simian Spirit Guide that I've been trying to cram into a deck for the longest time, and I wanted to see if it could work with Stompy in some capacity.
    Thanks!

To reliably cast a card with a colourless requirement you would need 8-12 colourless sources. To see an example of this, look up any list of Death & Taxes. That deck regularly splashes colourless for various Eldrazi creatures. Some lists splash for as little as the activation cost of Eldrazi Displacer and yet they still run 12+ colourless sources (yes, I know they use some of the lands for other purposes too). So your idea of splashing Matter Reshaper off 3 sources is ill-advised to say the least. It also runs completely counter to the strengths of Stompy, some of which are maximizing Aspect of Hydra, being resistant to Blood Moon and being resistant to Ghost Quarter.

As for your idea of using Simian Spirit Guide, I don't think that's a sound plan either. Having a playset of the card isn't a reason alone to use it. You'd need to have red cards you want to play, a reason why those red cards are better than what the deck already runs and most importantly a good reason why those cards should be ramped out with a Spirit Guide. Spending a whole extra card to pay for something is a massive cost and you should have a very good reason for doing so. I don't think such a reason exists for Stompy.

Aaaaand weve found this threads douche. Bravo congratulations on being mtgsalvations stompy threads douche!

Youre the same dude that had that horrible attitude with ceaseless hunger a few pages back. Bro you need to chill with your trash attitude. Nobody here likes your condescending remarks and attitude. So chillout.

What "attitude"? I am being sarcastic. It's a pretty common thing (at least where I am from). If you're unfamiliar with it then I suppose I understand why you're being overly sensitive about it. But maybe you need to examine your own reaction moreso than my perceived attitude.

What do you guys think of yisan, the wanderer bard ?

You spend your entire turn 3 and turn 4 (assuming you curve out) to get the glorious reward of a 1-drop? WOW! Incredible value.

I think that means he's playing 4 Vines of Vastwood and 4 Blossoming Defense, and he faced a deck that plays 4 Spreading Seas and 4 Sea's Claim.

I had considered it. But if that's the case why not just say so?
I would honestly not be surprised if there are isolated metas out there where people play 8 of the same card.

Um has anyone mentioned old-growth dryad. Looks like a good main deck card.

There's a discussion two pages back.

The ranger combo is actually a fairly easy set up in modern. I wonder what the rest of the deck would look like.

It would probably be Bant Allies. U/G is given from the combo colours and white has by far the best allies, while also offering good sideboard options and solid problem solvers like Path to Exile. At the very minimum I imagine the deck would run Harabaz Druid, to ramp into Turntimber Ranger, and Jwari Shapeshifter for redundancy.

Halimar Excavator could be an early blocker that makes the combo instantly kill. Because infinite 2/2 wolves without haste don't actually win on the spot. Ondu Cleric would help you stay alive and give you infinite life once you go off.

Would there be any advantage to a Turntimber Ranger / Arcane Adaptation combo over a Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker / Deceiver Exarch combo?

It naturally fits into a more aggressive deck with a solid beatdown plan. Beatdown with a combo in your back pocket has been very succesful before.

Thanks for completely ignoring my previous reply just to be a dbag.

So you criticize someone's card choice on the basis of your own complete misunderstanding and then expect them not to respond?
The very least I'll do is inform you that you've misunderstood something. If you see some malicious intent in that (or what you call being a "dbag") then that's on you.

I'd use Eldritch Evolution over Evolutionary Leap. It costs one more mana, but you can get whatever you want, and it goes directly onto the battlefield. Much better card IMHO.

Eldritch Evolution is a sorcery. It does absolutely nothing against removal.
I think you may have misunderstood the purpose of Evolutionary Leap.
