What would be a good starter deck list to tweak if my local meta is burn, infect, gr tron, valakut, jund and 5c humans?

    Thanks.

You can't play with 3 adepts.
There is no discussion about it, 4 adepts is absolutely core.
Kira and sygg fulfill the same role. Do you need 3?
I, and many others, dislike thassa. Consider how she actually plays for you, and whether or not its something worth keeping in.
Also note that sygg giving protection doubles as unblockable in many scenarios.
You don't have a lot of permission, as you have 29 creatures. After playing with it, you may (or may not) decide to change that based on your meta.

You are playing white, you can do better than hurkyl's recall.

Most people prefer tidebinder mage to flashfreeze.
3 spellskites might be overkill, and additionally, you have 3 more protection-effects mainboard. I realize skite is useful against decks like twin (we don't really need the help there), bogles, or infect, but chalice is fine in those matchups.

Threads of disloyalty is generally better than sower, especially since sygg can't save sower.

I've like monastery siege, and I think it functions like a better and more versatile thassa.

I understand why Silvergill is core as it's a 2 mana card draw with a body.

I was thinking that Sygg would save the merfolk if I needed it to in case I couldn't pull one of the Kira's.

I'll probably end up cutting Thassa and replacing Silvergill in place of Thassa.

I thought of Hurkyl's Recall as this: Chalice of the Void = 0 & 2; Recall there artifacts in there end step to where they must discard to 7, and, whenever they try playing one of there main creatures / mana sources it would get countered by Chalice, but, what's your thoughts on the replacement for Hurkyl's? Stony Silence or Kataki? That'd mess with Aether Vial though, which would definitely be a bad thing.

As for flashfreeze, it hard counters goyf, twin, collected company, chord of calling, knight of reliquary, qasali pridmage, etc... I understand that tidemage is great, but wouldn't it be better in these terms?

I'll probably end up dropping one spellskite, but I'm not so sure what to replace it with, I'm thinking a swords in longer/grindier match ups, maybe something else, what are your thoughts?

Threads allow you to gain control of 2 mana < less than creatures, while, sower lets you gain tasigur, and a bunch of other higher costing mana creatures that are decent, for a difference of one mana, and kira, should protect it.

    Thanks for the feedback.

I decided to build this deck as it's got decent answers to a lot of stuff, I'm not sure how it will work as I haven't got to take it to FNM yet, and somethings will need to be changed, but I'm thinking it's a great place to start with U/W Merfolk.

I'm thinking about removing the Monastery Siege and Sower of Temptation as well as 1x Spellskite but I'm not entirely sure yet.

I've been debating on trying this deck list out with a splash of blue for Snapcaster Mage, as he can bring back Secure the Wastes, Path's, Spectral's, etc...

    Edit:

I haven't played around with this deck too much, got interested in it last night, I've been reading what I can, but, mainly just for my purposes, has anyone found what this deck is weak against?

The main perks of staying U/R is the consistancy of the manabase and the fact that you can play more utility lands (typically you can go as far as 3 colorless lands, where grixis can barely afford 1).

What you lose for not splashing black is a good anticreature: you have to run Roast, where grixis has access to terminate and can play dismember without paying 4 life each time.

The version I like best for the moment is Grixis but with just a dismember and a terminate as black cards main decks, and Tasigurs in the side. It allows to play the same game as UR (with thte full combo package) but with good removal and can transform in the more controllish build.

Then, there are lots of different versions of grixis: 3 twin/5 creatures or full combo package, tasigurs main deck or not...etc. It all depends on your playstyle. I personally don't like the full grixis versions that are light on the combo and run maindeck tasigurs as they feel as a bad grixis control and the combo doesn't get online as often as I like. But again, some people seem to like the build, and both UR and different versions of Grixis have strong tournament results

EDIT: another reason I prefer the UR build (or just splash for Terminate/dismember) is that you have more room for stuff like Electrolyze, Spell Snare, dispels, or additional cantrips like peek in UR. This is especially in realtion to Kolaghan's command, which is a great card and makes a lot of value at buying back Snaps or combo creatures, but it forces us to cut some number if not all electrolyzes, which I feel are great: drawing a card in this deck is very strong, a lot more than making your opponent discard, as it allows you to better set up the combo!

Exactly my thoughts. I used to advocate for a plain UR build since i like it better but Tasigur is great against specific match ups to gain some win percentages. I very much like the UR build with the 2 cards you mentioned as a splash and then Tasigur in the sideboard.
I tested with Tasigur in the main deck and they're atrocious in a lot of match ups. Having them in the sideboard as a way to get some pressure in the match up where you need them is great. I currently running a Kolaghan's command in the main deck but it does not feel too good. I think I'm gonna drop it for a Lavamancer or another cantrip or the Brutal Expulsion.

Brutal Expulsion looks sweet. I was a GREAT Venser, Shaper Savant aficionado about a year ago. Twinning him was too fun to pass. But yeah now I feel he's a little too weak in this Kolaghan Command meta. But the new bounce/shock spell got me thinking.
At first I thought it wasn't much more than an unsummon and a magma spray but the fact that it's a Devoid spell adds a whole lot more depth to the spell. Now we can deal with Burrenton Forge Tender (that prevented us to play red sweepers), Auriok Champion (that breaks the combo with Exarch and such a pain), Master of Waves and Etched Champion. Maybe 4 mana is a bit too much but the upsides are clearly here. being able to shoot a walker is icing on the cake as well.

Don't know what you guys think but I'm definitely testing this one out.

Any chance you guys could post a deck list so I can see what you're running? Been having a problem myself running the flame slash / roast and it sounds like a very interesting idea what you guys are doing.

  • posted a message on Grixis Control
    Hey guys,

I decided to change my U/R Twin into Grixis Control for this next FNM to test it out. I am looking for thoughts on my deck setup.

I do not have Snapcaster Mage at this time as none of my LGS's have any, I did order them but I doubt they will be here by this next FNM.

I got a partial build of this deck put together as I wanted to try something new. My brother who was playing affinity against me lost 2-1.

    1st match, he won.

    2nd & 3rd matches, I won.

    My deck list includes

I'd appreciate any input on this, I am going to be adding in 2x Siege Rhino, and 2 - 4 Voice of Resurgence, as well as 1x Godless Shrine, 1x Stirring Wildwoods, 2x Sorin, Solemn Visitor, and 1x Vault of the Archangel

Sorry, my deck list doesn't come up correctly, hopefully it's understandable. Thanks.

  • posted a message on DTK Collected Company fakes?
    Hi,

I bought two Collected Company cards off of Amazon.com. When I received them today, I used a blacklight to test the card, when I compared it to another Collected Company the edges were brown versus black. I contacted the seller and they stated it was from the Origins Clash Pack and had a different printing. Also next to the artist name the paintbrush was missing it's top line edge making it look like a fish, while the real one had the line connecting to signify a paint brush. I have some pictures below to compare the cards. The bottom one I know is real while the top two are the ones I received today. Any help / information on this would be very appreciated.

    Hi,

I'm curious if you have a dragonlord Atarka on the battlefield tapped and attacking and hasted Flamerush Rider, copied Dragonlord Atarka, if you can use it's "when it enters the battlefield, it deals 5 damage" ability then sacrifice the clone, instead of the actual Atarka?

    Thanks.
