I was playing some guy online. Just a casual game so I didn't really care or bother asking about it but I played a spell (I think it was a creature) and he played a card in response I don't remember what it was called but it had delve and it was something like look at top 7 cards and draw 2 of them. I'm assuming he was looking for a counter but didn't find one and after he drew his cards he said "it resolves" so I think that was the case.

Anyways question is, can you even do that? Play a draw spell in response to an opponents spell, draw a counter and then play it before the opponent's spell resolves? I haven't been playing that long and the stack is still a little bit confusing to me but my understanding is that the draw card would have to resolve for him to draw cards and then wouldn't my card resolve right after that and thus wouldn't be able to be countered anymore even if he drew a counter?
