Quote from gamble629 »Hey all, looking to get into Burn on MODO for the first time.
What does everyone consider the stock list for someone to get started with?
I'm looking at this list that recently 5-0'd and I like the choices: https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/1189573#online
(I'd rather avoid Ensnaring Bridge for budget reasons, but I could probably be talked into it)
Once you get to flex cards, there isn't a stock list anymore but rather a stock set of cards to choose from.
This is the core set of cards you're pretty much always playing (this leaves 13 slots).
DeckMagic OnlineOCTGN2ApprenticeBuy These Cards | |
---|---|
19 Lands 4 Lightning Bolt 4 Lava Spike 4 Rift Bolt 4 Boros Charm | 4 Goblin Guide 4 Eidolon of the Great Revel 4 Monastery Swiftspear |
Some combination of the following generally fills out the rest of the deck:
- 1 Land
- 2-4 Lightning Helix
- 2-4 Searing Blaze
- 2-4 Skullcrack
- 0-2 Grim Lavamancer
- 0-1 Shard Volley
As far as the sideboard:
- 3-4 Artifact hate (I generally play 4, never less, sometimes more, maybe cover enchantments as well, via Wear//Tear or DRev)
- 2-3 Path to Exile (I always play 3)
- 2-3 Graveyard hate (I always play at least 2)
- Probably finish the playsets of what you pulled from the main for flex slots (if Blaze/Helix/Skullcrack)
- Maybe Exquisite Firecraft
- Maybe Deflecting Palm
- Maybe Searing Blood
- Maybe Ensnaring Bridge
- Maybe Grim Lavamancer
The core sideboard things are the first 3 in that list. The rest comes down to what you like and depends on what you expect to run into, and there isn't anything "stock" about it. Personally, I like 2 Firecrafts for control matchups and they also serve as a generic red burn spell if I need to side something out and "any burn spell will do". I don't like Bridge because it's too expensive and may just stall before you lose anyway. I don't like Palm, but I play it sometimes. I like Blood if I'm expecting a lot of small creatures and already have 4 Blazes in the main.

Im currently playing 2 O-Stone´s and 2 Ugin´s main for that as my anti-aggro package.. works good for me tbh - but I have also thought about a 1/1 split of O-Stone/All is dust... wasn´t able to test with that yet.

Sure.
I am currently playing my list i´ve played in Frankfurt earlier this year.

Just went 4-0 at my local FNM on Friday .. again.
2-0 E-Tron
2-0 Goblins

Anyone here who has any ambition for bigger competitive play this year?
I will take U-Tron (if nothing is banned, or the meta is 100% against us) to the following events this year and hopefully make Day2 at a GP:
GP Amsterdam (Sides)
MKM Series Hamburg
GP Brussels (Sides)
GP Prague (Mainevent)
GP Stockholm (Mainevent)
Hope to see some fellow U-Tron players around Europe this year.

Well, I like the approach in general and if it works for you, stick with it!
But what I was thinking about is, if Trophy Mageis really worth it, especially mainboard. In G1 it can only tutor O-Stone so it can be a dead draw really, really fast. The first option would be putting him SB and boarding him along with the other 3cmc artifacts you put in.
The second option would be replacing him with a fabricate, which also improves tutoring all other artifacts - I don´t think the 2/2 body is that important in your specific list with Hangarback walker and stuff.
What do you think?

I can share your experience here regarding the online meta, I am currently playing a 1-main 1-sb splitof Mindslaver and I am currently testing a lot of things online for the next bigger tournament (>500ppl) in January like a second Ugin, Gearhulk and even Karn.
My FNM meta is perfect for slaver, a lot of mid-lategame Decks. I finished 3-1 last Friday and won 3 games with slaver..
@GrimDucky I am currently running 2 Dismember MB (mainly against E-Tron) and 2 Contortion SB.

When talking about Mindslaver.. I´d just wanted to show you what arrived today from Volkan Baga himself:
2
as written before I played the Modern Side @GP Brussels yesterday.
My list was the following:
1 Forest
2 Swamp
1 Dryad Arbor
1 Kessig Wolf Run
1 Overgrown Tomb
1 Stomping Ground
1 Blood Crypt
1 Sacred Foundry
2 Blackcleave Cliffs
4 Copperline Gorge
3 Bloodstained Mire
1 Wooded Foothills
2 Faerie Macabre
1 Pale Recluse
1 Jungle Weaver
3 Simian Spirit Guide
4 Architects of Will
4 Deadshot Minotaur
4 Fulminator Mage
4 Monstrous Carabid
4 Street Wraith
Instant/Sorcery
4 Violent Outburst
4 Demonic Dread
3 Living End
3 Beast Within
2 Jund Charm
3 Ricochet Trap
1 Dismember
2 Shriekmaw
3 Ingot Chewer
2 Brindle Boar
2 Gnaw to the Bone
At first what I probably want to change within my deck for the next tournament:
I will replace the mire´s with catacombs one for one as far as my budget is allowing this, because I do want to get Dryad Arbor more reliable since I feel this card is very important against different matchups.
A second Pale Recluse is imaginable but I dont know what to cut in my list, I am thinking about an architect but I am not sure to swap a 1 mana cycle for a 2 mana cycle.. what do you guys think?
Besides that I am pretty happy with the mainboard. The sideboard was fine for me this time.
Matchup breakdown:
Match 1 Burn:
G1
I lost the roll, he took a mulligan to five, I had a good hand with 2 fastlands and 5 cycle´s - I kept the hand trusting to draw into cascade, which I unfortunately did not. 0-1
G2
I started and kept a pretty good hand with 2 lands, cascade, creatures including brindle boar and shriekmaw.
He played a guide T1 which gave me a third land - I evoked shriekmaw and turn 3´d the boar into a outburst turn 4. 1-1
G3
I was a little afraid to let him start again but I had a pretty solid hand with shriekmaw, violent outburst and a few cycles.
He stuck on one land, which I could blow up turn two with spirit guide into fulminator - a cascade turn 3 sealed the deal. 2-1
Boarding:
-4 street wraith
-2 faerie macabre
+2 Brindle boar
+2 gnaw to the bone
+2 shriekmaw
Match 2 vs RG Tron
G1:
Game 1 and Game two were pretty much similar, I had a couple of Fulminator Mage and beast within in both opening hands which he could not handle. 2-0
Boarding:
-1 demonic dread
-2 faerie macabre
+3 Ingot chewer
Match 3 vs Elves
G1: He won the dice roll and played nearly his whole hand turn 2, which I cleared turn 3 after cycling 2 monstrous carabid and 1 deadshot minotaur. 1-0
G2: He took a mulligan to 5 and drew pretty bad - nothing to do here for him after me blowing up his two caverns, he was without any land´s for the rest of the game. 2-0
Match 4 vs RG Tron
G1 Pretty bad match for me, I kept a hand with 2 lands, 4 cycles and an demonic dread- I didn´t draw into either foothills, outburst or dryad arbor himself which was followed by Ugin, the spirit dragon which I could not answer. 0-1
G2 I had to take a mulligan down to 5 which still left me with just a copperline gorgewhich should be my only land until he played slaughter games naming LE on turn 4. 0-2
Boarding:
-1 demonic dread
-2 faerie macabre
+3 Ingot chewer
Match 5 vs Griselshoal (can someone please advise me in this MU?!)
G1: I totally messed up giving him his Griselbrand and Borborygmos Enraged onto the battlefield with my cascade into living end - but I had an one turn kill in my grave and did not know what to do otherwise - he probably would have finished me the turn after anyhow. 0-1
G2: I managed to discard Faerie macabre to get rid of griselbrand and Borborygmos Enraged and killed him 2 turns after that. 1-1
G3: Fine turn 2 kill 1-2
Boarding:
-1 jungle weaver
-1 demonic dread
+2 jund charm
Match 6, Infect:
I really can just remember that I won round one, he killed me turn 2 or 3 in the 2nd game. I kept a very very clunky hand game 3 and lost because of a missing swamp-source. 1-2
Conclusion:
In the end I went 3-3, I am pretty happy with this result since this was my third tournament with LE at all, playing it since the mid/end of october now.
I faced a lot of good players and pretty viable and strong decks, which I obviously expected - I am getting more and more confident and that is all I wanted for this GP-sideevent.
Since this is my first more detailed tournament review I am more than open for any constructive suggestions.
Greetings from Germany
Max
