The time has come for me to take my leave of the site. I no longer have the time nor interest level that I once did regarding mafia and this site in general. As such, I am also relinquishing my seat on the mafia council. To those of you that I've played with in the past, thanks so much because you're the ones that make this game fun. To those of you that I've never played with, I do regret missing the chance to get to know you as it is the community here that makes mafia what it is.

I may be back sometime in the future, but for now, *tips hat and walks out of door*.

posted a message on The Forum Rules as they Apply to Mafia
    Hey Guys,

There's been some confusion in regards to how the forum rules as a whole affect the mafia forum. I thought it would be good for me to make it more clear how we try to moderate this sub. The only rules in that are moderated a little more loose are Spam and Trolling/Flaming rules due to the nature of how the game of mafia is played. To be clear:

    1) In games, these rules still apply. However, they are allowed more leeway with regards to carding than in other areas of the forum.
    2) Outside of games, these rules are applied fully. This includes posts after a game has completed.

If there are any questions, please feel free to PM any mods of this forum or use our helpdesks.

Ah, see here's the difference between Avalon and mafia. In Avalon, players are not eliminated. Drey is correct in that you would have to mark them as VT. I might post a summary of the rules of the game later today after I get home. It is a mafia-varient without kills for 5-10 players. My gaming group likes it better than mafia because people aren't eliminated and get to keep playing through the whole thing.

As you can see, didn't put much thought in the proposal to borrow the role o_O.

You can have additional roles, but for a pure experience:

3 mafia, 9 town (1 of which knows all the mafia members)

No role shenanigans, just pure mafia play.

EDIT: To be clear, I was originally mentioning the idea just as a cop/tracker/watcher investigative replacement. However, your question prompted a potential different idea.

In talking of making basics more streamlined, I'd like to propose a role that I haven't seen done in them before, but which I think (with experience in playing the game of Avalon) is a lot less swingy than cop/tracker/watcher type roles. The role is simply thus: one player knows who all of the mafia are. However, at the end of the game, if the town would win, the mafia gets one chance to guess who this player was. If they are correct, they win instead.

To the Council: I implore you to reconsider my queue restructuring proposal to size-based instead of complexity-based. TCM's Normal sign-ups have been open for over a month, now, and other games are still having serious activity issues despite the holidays having been over for half a month, now. In addition, the last Normal was abandoned, largely due to activity issues with the playerbase. I suggest we blur the line between Specialty and Normal due to the fact that the two are largely becoming indistinguishable anyway.

...and yet again, I am still in favor of it. We also now have a couple more months of proof that our current system isn't cutting it and normals don't have anywhere near the popularity they once did. Once again, I am willing to listen to proposals on how to fix this issue (something people kept insisting was a non-issue), but this proposal seems like the best course of action. Additionally, it should be noted that I am only but one member of the council; my voice does not speak for our entirety.

My opinion on the hosting list is the same as it was (that we should move to requiring those signed up to host have a setup ready, not necessarily reviewed or what they end up running, just something). We haven't discussed the issue behind closed doors largely because there is no reason for us in the council to. Anywho, that's my two cents.

In regards to a shadow system, :thumbs up:

While I like the idea of the 2 reviewer rule:

    1) There was never a council consensus
    2) It's really hasty to be forcing that on people lined up to host in the next month or two

It seems more realistic to expect the 2-reviewer rule to apply to people 3-4 down in the hosting lists.

On a mod note: please people, cool it. This is hardly something to get worked up over

I believe the verdict right now is implement the 1 month leeway to people on the hosting queues to get a game ready (not necessarily reviewed) or be removed and any further people that wish to join a queue must have a completed game. I'm not comfortable implementing anything else right now as we don't really seem to have any form of consensus.

I'm not sure if the "large game problem" can or needs to be fixed. The problem with large games is player preference. Players just prefer smaller games due to the fact large games are unwieldy and take a long time to finish. I'm not sure you can change that or want to change. I personally don't. To me this is just a natural progression of a userbase. I believe the correct response is to change large games rather than change the userbase.

In case it's not clear, I agree with you. I'm not trying to change what players want. I'm trying to change the supply to meet the demand. I'm looking for any and all suggestions about how we fix the supply-side of the equation.

I think we're starting to lose sight of what the real problems here are:

Large games (for the most part, unless exceptional mod/flavor) are not nearly as popular as they once were. Much to the detriment of both the players of those games and the mods that run them. This is bad for our sub as a whole.

To a much lesser extent are the games being ready on time. I feel we may have at least come to a solution for this one in giving all players on the hosting list a month to get a game together or tough cookies.

My primary concern at the moment is how to solve the larger problem of ... well, large games. I'm up for any suggestions on how to help curb the problem without starting to reign in on how large games have gotten/are getting.

I would like to point out that the tiered hosting system doesn't stop you from creating whatever games you want. With a move to needing a game created before you can be put on a hosting list, you'd have to create the game first anyway and if the game is good enough, I see no reason why it wouldn't be allowed onto the sign-up list.

I don't think that it is that difficult for Mods to make setups to accmomodate more than 20 players, but make the same setup able to be run with 18. If you open a setup and 24 people apply and you know how to accommodate them all, you should be allowed to do so. As long as your game could also run with 18 people.

As far as I'm concerned, that would be perfectly acceptable. In fact, it's how I plan to design future games anyway. That way, you can pretty much always be guaranteed to start, but you have extra roles available if more people sign up.

I like the overall idea, but I don't see a reason to enforce the artificially low game cap for third games and beyond. I would rather encourage host creativity and allow games up to 24 players (but no more), with the added stipulation that hosts must be prepared to swap or abandon their large games if they do not fire.

We've already established that anything 20+ is having a hard time filling. I'd rather 18 be the max with people getting permission to create a game (or change their game) with more than that.

There is no really good position between 12 and 16. If you disagree, I'd love to hear your argument. As for between 16 and 18, I'm wanting us to try and limit most games to no more than 18 players. I could see an argument for changing the second stepping stone to being allowed to host a 12 person mini and the last step is 18 players. I still want someone to have a couple games under their belt before being able to host at the limit (barring council exceptions).

    - First game you host must be a basic

I'm looking for some other council input on this. My current proposal is:

    1) Keep the list demarkations the same. That is, Basic, Mini, Normal, ...

    2) Tell everyone signed-up to host a game that they have 1 month if they have not already completed a setup after which if they still don't have a completed setup, they will be removed from the hosting list. This doesn't have to be the setup they end up running, but everyone on the hosting list should have at least one setup available to pull out if they're needed at a moment's notice.

    3) All further requests to host follow the following rules (with exceptions granted by council request):
    - First game you host must be a basic
    - Second game you host is limited to 16 players
    - Third game and beyond, your game is limited to 18 players

My idea was just for the hosting queues. The FQT/PCQ are theoretically judged on not only their style and game mechanics, but are also judged as what is appropriated to the forum at the time.

    1) I like the idea of the setup needing to be done before you can sign up for a queue. Maybe we give everyone that doesn't currently fit that a month or so to get their games together or get removed

    2) I think the size/popularity issue actually correlates to what Ecophagy was describing. Here's another possible proposal: The maximum number of players in your game is decided by how many games you have already run. For example:
1st Time Hosting: Max game size is 12 (Meaning first game hosted has to be a mini or basic)
2nd Hosting: Max game size is 16
3rd Hosting: Max game size is 18

Anyone wishing to increase game size beyond that limit needs to get special permission (maybe with the exception that the first one must be followed).

I would like to submit to anyone still wanting to design a game with 20+ players some more evidence in the sign-ups of Arcadic's "King of the Hill" mafia. It has now been open for two weeks, and he is still 3 players short. As of right now, the game hasn't started, but I will eat crow if once the game has been going for a few weeks, he doesn't start having activity issues. Following that, needing to modkill at least a couple players due to lack of replacements by the end of the game.

It is truly my belief that, for most instents and purposes, we are past the time when 20+ player games are able to be run here. Now, there are exceptions to the rule, but they are just that, exceptions. Please, please, please think carefully about designing any games in the future with 20 or more players. The evidence has shown time and time again that these games are plagued by lack of a sufficient player base to support them.

I know I specifically communicated with Seppel as to whether there was a potential legitimate reason for DRey to be posting like he did, and Seppel came back and confirmed that there was. If this was any other game where that wasn't a mechanic, DRey would have been dealt with as appropriate, but you cannot ask he be carded over something that Seppel setup. Heck, if that mechanic wasn't there, I would have gladly just merged all the posts and we could move on with our lives. This may be a good time to ask any future post count related mechanics be vetted by a sub moderator just to ensure that this sort of situation doesn't happen again where a player is encouraged by the game to behave in a way inconsitant with the forum rules. Flame Warriors mafia springs to mind as another example of where good intentions/ideas go bad when met with the forum rules proper.

As far as his behavior/playstlyle where there is the accusation that DRey more or less gave up and was playing to lose, I will need the time to actually read the setup and the related post section.

Hello. I'm stopping in here from the Hosting Signup Thread. Iso suggested I ask here if I can open a thread with a poll to see if there is enough interest in playing a 30 player mafia game before having my set up checked. I know that 30 players is a lot. That's why I'm asking that this be a Player's Choice Game. If I can get 35+ of the sites 70+ active players interested in playing the game within 7 days, I would like permission to have someone check it over and begin the game as soon as is reasonable.

Just a piece of friendly advice: Games that have a first digit in the number of players of 2 or more have a history of needing replacements and modkills due to inactivity. I would recommend to anyone designing a game to keep it under 20 players. That's not to say that we won't allow games to be larger, we will, but experience has taught me that even though there may be vocal interest in something, that doesn't really map onto the reality of the situation well.

It's highly unlikely that it would be.

TL; DR: After this game messes up my hard drive, can i play it on a USB stick without fear of more hard drive problems?

    Thanks.

You are assuming the game messed up your hard drive which is almost certainly not the case. Playing off a USB stick should be fine.

You can, but in my experience there's a tendency there for the tail to wag the dog. People want first and foremost a good game experience. There's nothing wrong with, say, wanting to do a particular game theme, or have particular characters, but you have to avoid overdoing it.

I happen to agree with Xyre. Not even that, but I find it much easier to work on the gameplay of the game with 'generic' flavored roles then after all that is done, figure out a flavor that can be fit.

I'll add that if Xyre, king of flavor, is advocating design before flavor, it's worth sitting up and taking notice.

Perhaps a werewolf that flips based upon the number of wolves or werewolves in play?

Pffft, you've seen nothing yet. I'm on the specialty list after all.

    This game is perfectly normal.

    EDIT

    Right, CCC time...

    NAME 3GR
    Creature - Human Werewolf

Whenever this creature enters the battlefield or transforms into ~, destroy all lands on the battlefield.

At the beginning of each upkeep, if no spells were cast last turn, transform Afflicted Deserter.

    2/2

    //

    NAME
    Creature - Werewolf

Whenever ~ attacks, it gains +1/+1 for each land on the battlefield.

At the beginning of each upkeep, if a player cast two or more spells last turn, transform Howlpack of Estwald.

    2/2

Hate to be a poo-pooer of ideas, but I'm not a huge fan of this. Destroy all lands at 5 is overpowerd and doesn't really fit flavorfully with the idea of a werewolf. Not only that, but once it's in play, if two spells are played in a turn, destroy all lands again. This card alone makes the game unfun and stalematey.

But if we are listing random things It would be great for have Mafia Sec to work on I would say Player Roster.

Yeah, plan to start that long and arduous process this weekend. I'm also considering (counter to what I thought before), adding closed sign-ups to the new sub and only moving them out if replacements are required as they also tend to clutter up the space. But maybe that's just my perception of things.

I think the Numbers are necessary. I don't understand why the new tagging feature stops us from Numbering Basics(HTML wizardry?)

Nothing stops you from numbering them, but the numbering will not get the same nice formatting as the "Basic" prefix. Yes, this is due to HTML wizardry. The prefixes are only there to denote specific thread types. If you go up to the search thread feature, you can now search by prefix. In this case, that means you'll eventually be able to search by game-type. If we were to create a new tag for every basic, not only would that become unweildy in the tool, it would screw up the search functionality too.

Would direct links to soft-deleted threads still work? I know there are some games that have flavour setup in the signup threads (e.g. Ozone Underground) and would hate to have those links break.

Excellent point, they would not. It may be best then to create a new sub forum and move old signups into there. In that case, the links would still work, and we'd clean up a lot of the clutter. (Keep in mind that this would only be applied to sign-ups for games that are complete due to the reason tordeck mentioned)

If we continue with the prefixes, can we get some "misc." type prefix for atypical games ([The Family] or [Clan Flamingo] games, clan contests, etc.)?

Can do. I'll try to find a color/format that works.

Is it possible for the tagging feature to use regular expressions? If so the Basic #XX could be part of the tag.

Yes, but that would end up involving a lot more effort and skill than the people in charge of spreading it out either should be asked to do or require. Right now, you can see the example of how I've been post-fixing older threads at the bottom of page one.

To continue from a point Arcadic raised, I don't actually think we need the # part of the basic titles. It was just a standard that was picked up at some point in the past that doesn't particularly serve any need. I see no reason for it unless people want it.

Game-type colorings are now available when you create a new thread or when you advanced edit the first post of a thread. You should see me and game hosts changing thread prefixes to the new system over the coming week. I'm starting to consider that we'll need an additional one for sign-up threads as well.

As an aside, how would people feel about the soft-deleting or demarkation of sign-up threads? Right now, sign-up threads for games that have already completed do little more than clog up the forum. (Soft-deleting means more or less that the thread gets hidden to normal members)

I'll just chime in with: if someone wants to break/ruin a game, they don't need 'thank you's to do it. This is the major reason I just like a blanket "Don't be a dick" rule. I don't care whether or not you use thank yous in games I host, just don't abuse them.

More or less, use some common sense, and we'll all get along fine.

I'm going to make this an informal poll. Here are the current pending suggestions:

    Basic - Proper Game Title
    Mini - Proper Game Title
    Normal - Proper Game Title
    Specialty - Proper Game Title
    FQT - Proper Game Title
    PCQ - Proper Game Title
    League - Proper Game Title

If anybody uses a different skin where any of these are hard to see, please speak up.

My only issue with the title identifier is that blue text is really hard to read on the dark skin.

    Maybe change it to Orchid.

    Other than that good idea.

The examples were merely meant as an example of what could be done. We can chose however we want the blocks to be represented on the screen.

A new feature is being tested out/developed and I'm here to see if members/fellow council members thought it would be helpful for us. The feature is customizable thread prefixes. Basically, we can have custom HTML code for prefixes of our choosing.

From my understanding, it is an additional drop-down option when creating/modifying a thread and in our case could be used to signify game type (much like we do now, but we can customize the formatting of the text).

Say we want to color-code game types, threads would now appear in the forum like:
    Basic - Proper Game Title
    Mini - Proper Game Title
    Normal - Proper Game Title
    Specialty - Proper Game Title

Or whatever formatting you want. I thought that might work nice for easier distinguishing of games here. Anybody interested? If so, I need to let the admins know what we want and how it should be formatted.

Personally, I believe the wording is fine. Reading between the lines of the members not knowing who each other are is a dead giveaway.

Sorry to everyone that I needed to replace out. I just don't have the time that I used to for playing mafia.

I missed a few systems due to being poor. It's the one that the sequel is in limbo right? Due to licensing rights I think.

Tell me about System Shock 2, atlseal? (Also, why not the prequel?)

System Shock 2 is a hybrid FPS/RPG game that does scares the way that Dead Space should have. The horror is a lot more centered around suspense than 'boo' monsters like in Doom. Really good story. It is the spiritual predecessor to Bioshock and these guys 'get' atmosphere. I would happen to rate it pretty highly in my list of games.

As far as why not the prequel, it's just the advancements in design over the first. You have to keep in mind that this series is over a decade old.

That's fine. I'm not demanding people use it as a replacement. It is merely one use for it. We're not going to suddenly start warning/infracting for going "^ This ^" instead of using it.
