Why would you even bother to buy 6 cards worth less than 1 ticket?
At most you will get 2 tix no? And you have to sell to a bot so maybe even less.
    Please explain.

Yup. And pack rats, desecration demon, and the like were 0.10 at some point

their pricelist is set up to immediately look at online prices, but there is a button to look at the paper prices.

Interesting... The price going down when they *start* redemption? That seems counter-intuitive to me - wouldn't the supply be decreasing and thus the remaining cards be more valuable?

supply will start going down a little bit at the "start" but the people buying have a max price for a set that they will pay (a percentage of what they can get for it in paper). If they can't get it at that price they will not buy. so the price of a set is limited. From there they will be more willing to pay for high ticket items and less willing to pay for low ticket items.

since sellers want max value and the redemption buyers have a top threshold, the high ticket items rise a bit in price to balance out the loss on low ticket items. This is why Voice was close to $50 since it was carrying the value of the whole set. Now that another card is gaining price (BBoV) the price of Voice can drop to a more reasonable level without the redemption price of the set fluxuating too much.

this is at least how I've been understanding it. A few things will screw with this when a card gains a lot of hype, but sellers aren't yet willing to sell other card cheaper making the set price rise, but it will always fall back to equilibrium eventually.

To add to this, with the new payout scheme for prerelease events, does any one think pricing for Theros in the beginning will not follow patterns of old?

As to this, I highly doubt it. The amount of product opened wont change in any significant way.

Prices at release are driven by public demand. More demand=higher prices. Once initial demand is met prices drop to the secondary demand: redemption sellers. These people buy up whole sets to redeem in paper to resell. They will only buy cards if they can get a full set + redemption fees under the going rate for a paper set, so prices drop on everything but the most expensive cards. Other factors enter play if a card gets suddenly popular or something upsets the trading proceedure (massive not shutdowns or whatnot).

It usually takes about a month to level out and then after redemptions start the prices move up a bit to compensate for the loss of supply.

    Quote from Tzefick
@Beware: I was making a point that some rares have been deliberately been created as junk and there's no reason to it. Those in limited just makes the possibility of skewed power-level that much more. No sane person would look at Trait Doctoring and exclaim it to be an interesting design.

Again, you're wrong. People look at junk rares like trait doctoring or guild feud in limited all the time. Those people are new players who are learning what is good or bad. They'll play it in their draft deck, see how it works, learn that it isn't effective, and grow as players. This is why crappy rares are made (in part) . I remember back in kamigawa Maro explained why one with nothing was printed and it basically amounted to this reason.

    1. I think he was talking about the mechanic aspect, not the flavor
    2. So all people should be excited about an updated Jackal Pup? I think you need to put down your nostalgia glasses.
    3. They are good lands. Exciting?
    4. Just because it is exciting and not boring for you doesn't mean that is the case for everyone else.

    1. He specified generic NAME. read with your eyes not your mouth.
    2. I'm not excited about it either. Was never really a red player, but (using your own logic in 4.) just because your not excited for it doesn't mean the people that it's meant for shouldn't be excited.
    3. They are exciting. What is exciting to you? reprinting original dual lands? Original dual lands are powerful but FAR from exciting. In fact they are straight up boring if you ignore the fan girls going gaga over their price. Exciting is when a land does something it's never been able to do before and is tied into a theme that is also useful. Exciting isn't countered by "this isn't as good as my last lands. I'm gonna cry". If that is how you see things then I don't know how you get excited for anything that isn't a bomb mythic shiny foil hallelujah Jace reprint.
    4. I'm not bored by it because they are new. They may be updates of old card or similar to cards that already exists, but guess what, so is almost every single card printed. This game is 20 years old. It's going to recycle old ideas naturally.

how long have you played magic? I'm assuming not too long as you would notice that every couple years older card become outdated naturally and updates are brought in to shake it up.

    1) Anger of the gods is not generic. a lot of planes don't have any gods. this one is full of them. the name fits theros perfectly.

    2) Jackal pup is exceedingly outdated. This is just an interesting possible take on that. Look back in time and it's happened before (Norin I look at you!)

    3) The Scrylands are far from the least exciting rare lands ever printed. And second best for a year?!? Were you expecting them to print something BETTER than shocklands?!? That's just you being greedy.

    4) Why are you singling out 2 cards and a land cycle?? What about the gods? are they boring? The gods' weapons? How about all the other random goodies coming out?

Stop why whining and enjoy the good stuff and ignore the uninteresting stuff like EVERY OTHER SET EVER! Smile

Until theros. Also pack prices always drop this low during release events. There's more money in m14 than in dgm. Expect to see prices crawl back up over the next month.

No love for artifact color fixing/deck thinning? The pack is underpowered with only a couple double mana cards to really choose from. I'll take the fixer and run it in whatever deck easily

The checklist cards are clearly unpopular, for the reasons outlined in the original post. And as far as the above goes, people should not be asked to buy 8 of a card in order to play 4 of them in a deck. Especially for the rare / mythic DFC's (for example, Garruk). Planeswalkers already cost $30-$50 each in many cases - can you imagine having to buy 8 of them? Not to mention how the doubling of demand will further drive up prices.

If someone has to be inconvenienced by Wizards' implementation, then as much as possible: it should be Wizards. Not their players.

what the hell are you talking about? no one is asking anyone to buy 8 of a card. there is in no way a need to buy 8 of these cards unless the PLAYER wants to. either use the checklist, use the real card in the deck and flip it while in play, or use the real card in the deck and proxy the back (night) half as a token to overlay on the card while in play. the proxy OUTSIDE the deck is just like any token, you can use whatever type of proxy you want as long as it is understandable in it's intent and application. Why would anyone who isn't a complete idiot (or wanting every instant of the card to be shiny and foiled and can't stand taking it out of the sleeve [I'm being redundant with idiot here of course]) buy 8 copies just to use 4 of them?

personally I've been looking for a finisher post rotation for mono blue (or RU) control. this should be able to fill 2 spots, early lightning rod (in which case you don't care it dies as it just made them waste a card on something much more useless) and if they let it go unanswered long enough it'll make an amazing finisher (by the time it flips you'll have plenty of mana to protect it long enough to kill). playing it T2 is just fine with mental mistep to back it up for most early threats and if they waste their T2 killing it then you just timewalked an important turn for them! If they play a T2 permanent, you have bounce in following turns/a creature that most likely can block the creature early without death (I see alot of 2 power creatures for T1-2 drops).
