Me and a friend were playing at a 2HG back during Mirrodin Besieged/Innistrad (I was doing G/W weenies and he was doing Tempered Steel/Battlecry)
This guy and a kid (they probably got paired together because they both went and didn't have partners, idk) were playing against us. The kid was running some underwhelming green thing and the guy was running Delver (of course). Upon attacking (and potentially dealing lethal damage), the kid waited until after blockers were declared (there were none declared) before casting Fog. The guy was all pissed and flustered and started getting hostile to the kid telling him he can't cast the Fog because no blockers were declared and therefore there's no 'time' for him to cast the spell because it isn't in response to anything (what?). I told him that he can cast it when no blockers are declared, and the guy got all mad and called for a judge.
When the judge (obviously) told him he could cast the Fog and prevent the damage, the guy got even more mad and decided to counter the kid's Fog (on his own team) shouting that they were going to lose anyway.
That same day, we got paired with another kid and a guy we had never met but the guy was nowhere to be found. After being forced to forfeit the first round due to his absence, the guy showed up last minute to the second round, drunk off his ass from the bar across the street. The guy was playing a mill deck, and the kid was playing R/W aggro, but was being very defensive. Their strategy won out, the guy ultimately milling us out with Increasing Confusions galore. During the game, however, the guy was unfamiliar with what LITERALLY EVERY CARD DID and was really rude and grabby with our cards. We didn't press the matter though, because the kid was already probably having a weird time with this stranger he too was probably paired with.
Overall it was a weird day with a lot of rude older gentleman getting paired with children.

I want to limit the use of certain combos, excepting my Ugin's Nexus/Prototype Portal combo. I have Onakke Ancient, but I don't have very many artifacts with activated abilities.
Any suggestions for this deck anyone?

It has a simple premise, and a whole lotta cards from the original Daretti.
My hopes for this deck are to fuhgeddabout a lot of End of Turn triggers vis-a-vis Sundial of the Infinite, and, obviously, use lots of sweet sweet Feldon recursion. Some win-cons include beating to a pulp with Dragons and Wurmcoil, along with some other decent sized creatures, as well as Scrap Mastery, which happens to be a bomb in decks like these. Some cards for consideration are some goblin spawning engines and my favorite little sac engine, Goblin Bombardment.

Mindclaw Shaman is for the instant/sorcery heavy decks out there (steal one a turn with Feldon, or just look at their hand at your leisure.)
On an unrelated note, I have a silly rulings question I think I know the answer to but need to ask anyway: Can Tuktuk the Explorer be on the field at the same time as Tuktuk the Returned? I assume yes, because they have different names, and creatures don't have name fragments in their subtypes like Planeswalkers do.
I look forward to any contributions! Thanks!

I've used this deck a few times so far, with no losses yet.
Got some results thus far for my deck.
Defeated a Brago, King Eternal twice, no losses.
Defeated a Ghoulcaller Gisa twice, no losses.
Defeated a Nekusar, the Mindrazer once, no losses.

Ghoulcaller used lots of undying, Grave Titan and hella recursion coupled with discard that kept me at 3 or less cards in hand the majority of both games, and otherwise saw what was in my hand. Most of the enchantments I was able to use to my advantage, i.e. one that caused me to sac on deaths of his creatures. (recursion via Feldon Wurmcoil Engine to sac, or otherwise Sundial of the Infinite the ability away on my turns, when it wasn't advantageous. Won both times. One from beat-sticking him to death with Wurmcoil, one from using Bosh, Iron Golem's ability to burn-spell him with artifact creatures and Ugin's Nexus. He almost won one time with Livewire Lash, but I was quicker on the last hit using Epochrasite during upkeep, putting Feldon's ability on the stack to flash in Hamletback Goliath, and then using Flamekin Village to give Epochrasite haste, swinging for the win.

The easiest to beat was Brago. Turn 1, Mountain. Turn 2, Dormant Volcano. Discard Hoarding Dragon because 8 cards in hand. Turn 3, Mountain, Feldon. Turn 4, Hoarding Dragon via Feldon's ability, dies at end of turn, pull Wurmcoil Engine. Discard Wurmcoil Engine (too many cards in hand.)
Rinse, repeat, only using a mixture of Ugin's Nexus, Sundial of the Infinite, other artifacts, recursing Wurmcoil as needed, until he Darksteel Mutationed Feldon, and I had to waste my mana on Spine of Ish Sah. Steel Hellkite, swung, activated ability for three mana eliminating Detention Sphere and Darksteel Mutation. Won later.

I also had a few games in which I deliberately skipped the first turn land drop in order to deliberately discard Bogardan Hellkite to get him out on turns 3-5 triggering his removals. Pretty metal.

Cards currently up for consideration include that one dragon that triggers a win if you control twenty or more artifacts. I own it somewhere, I forget the name.

The core sets swap out with the arrival of the next core set as opposed to the next block (There's often a brief window where there are three blocks and a core set in Standard. It happened with Innistrad, Mirrodin, and Ravnica I believe.)
The core sets are typically released in the beginning of summer, like Julyish.
    HOWEVER
    There is a change a-comin'.
They are eliminating the core set+2 block format in standard, with M15 being the last 'core set'.
There's an article about the change here:
    http://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/mm/metamorphosis
    We're shifting to a two-block format instead of a two-block + 1 Core set format.
Sometime in Fall of 2015 they are going to shift out the last core set, to my understanding.

I mean, all have their ups and downs. For a newbie, I'd probably recommend core set if you're going for basic utility stuff/just general common mechanics. (they reprint a lot of older mechanics set to set. For example, in M13 there was a lot of Exalted and stuff. A lot of the sets like Theros or Tarkir will have lots of unique stuff that may or may not be reprinted/rarer mechanics like 'morph' and other things. Note that there's a lot of tri-color in the Tarkir block, if that doesn't suit you.

I'd recommend getting boosters or an event deck. Singles would probably be hard to manage getting the right cards for you given your inexperience/unfamiliarity with Standard, and a booster box is quite a bit of money to spend if you are new! (I've been playing for a few years, even did Standard, but I still have never purchased a booster box. I do purchase lots of singles though)

The thing with Standard is it can tend to be a money pit (when cards are released, if they're good in the format, they can cost an upwards of $30 a piece, and not retain their value for a week, let alone years) Some exceptions do occur a few times every block, with something like Snapcaster Mage or some other terribly powerful card, for example.
Standard format largely determines the price and perceived value of a card, albeit only temporarily, and the price rarely lasts long. Ajani, Caller of the Pride almost hit fifty dollars when he came out, dropped to like 10 within a few weeks, only to fall down to whatever he is now, maybe like eight bucks. Standard is fickle about stuff like that.

I'd definitely recommend getting a good card base through booster packs, or an event deck if you're feeling like playing immediately. Event decks are considered 'tournament ready', contain and usually have at least a few okay money cards and are fairly balanced. They are superior to intro packs in quality, and might even win you a few games at an FNM depending on the climate there.

The thing about Standard as well is that it is very meta-heavy. Depending on where you are, you might find little to no variety between decks, which can be predictable and annoying, if you enjoy playing interesting decks and having some degree of fun seeing what others can come up with. I stopped playing Standard at tournaments because everybody and their grandmother was running decks with 4 Thragtusks, 4 Restoration Angels, and a few Huntsmaster of the Fells. Like literally everyone at my store at the time.

If you ever need general tips about deckbuilding, want card suggestions, remember to feel free to post in here! The forum has everything from rulings to sections to post your decklists or talk about specific formats.

  • posted a message on Question about CMC between copies and changes in a card.
Player A has a token copy of Wurmcoil Engine and a regular Bosh, Iron Golem
Player A also plays Scuttling Doom Engine (not a token copy, the real deal)
Player B plays Darksteel Mutation, targeting Scuttling Doom Engine.
    Player B has six life.
Bosh's ability does damaged based on CMC of sacrificed artifact.
    SO
    A. Do token copies (Wurmcoil) retain their converted mana costs. Tokens typically have 0, but it is a 'copy' so to speak.
    B. Does the Doom Engine (is its death trigger neutralized? Are death triggers 'abilities'? Sorry, side question) still retain a CMC of 6, despite it becoming a '0/1 artifact creature with indestructible'? I assumed yes, given it only addressed it's power, toughness, and abilities.
    C. If, hypothetically, Purphoros, God of the Forge were on the field, and we were talking about, say, Hellkite Tyrant in regards to Darksteel Mutation or a token copy, would I have the devotion from Hellkite Tyrant, or would I lose that?

In the game I was playing, we assumed it was more likely than not that the CMCs of at least one of the creatures were retained (he had no chance of winning anyway at that point) but we weren't certain.
    Thanks!

    1. In my personal opinion, the Deckbuilder's toolkits are better for a good base of cards than an Intro Pack, though you might not be able to piece together something as well. I personally think that for a beginning player some form of one color aggro is the best choice/easiest to run. Green or white, typically I think. A mill deck is also in my opinion wholly impractical/nigh undoable in Standard right now. Mill in Standard (the format FNMs play) is rarely a thing, though it can be depending on what's in it. I started out playing Standard, but I'd recommend learning Modern first just because more cards available and stuff, but it can be done, obviously, because I did.

    2. It varies store to store, player to player. Some players can be real ********s, but most should typically be more than happy to teach you rules as you go along. You should be able to watch as long as you're not doing anything like looking at everybody's hands and talking about what's in them and general stuff. It's a tournament, just make sure you ask whoever is running it before you run around talking a whole lot about people's games. Feel it out first and make sure people are cool with it. Most stores also have people casually playing around in the store not during tournaments as well, so that may be an option to watch as well. At every store I've been to, the owner has been more than willing to play as long as they aren't busy.

    3. Okay:
Each year a Core set is introduced at some time. (I.e. M10, M11... M15, etc.) The latest one is part of the Standard block. The most recent 'block', i.e. in this case 'Khans of Tarkir', Fate Reforged, and some other set that hasn't been released yet are also Standard. Also, the one before it, (in this case the Theros block) is Standard. A block is composed of three sets, typically taking place in one 'plane' in the Magic storyline. Tarkir, Theros, Innistrad, Mirrodin/New Phyrexia, Kamigawa, what have you. Modern is several blocks before that, and there's also vintage and legacy.

    4. As for forums and websites, I find this forum pretty helpful. I personally learned how to play because I asked some of my friends if they play it at all, and I happened to ave a friend who plays it, and he basically taught me. I think peer-to-peer learning through various games is one of the best ways to learn. I use other sites, usually through searching (insert card here) "rulings" to find out specific events that happen involving that card or answer questions about it.

Hell, some people might be willing to Skype in games for all I know. Maybe I'll make a basic 60-card deck and show you a bit, if you'd want and were free tomorrow or the next day.
    Happy playing!

So regardless of the toughness of the defending creature, when trample is involved, a second hit still happens?
Thanks for the quick response by the way!
    Posted in: Magic Rulings Archives
  • posted a message on Doublestrike/Trample interactions questions
What happens in the following situations:
Player A attacks with a 5/5 Doublestriker with Trample.
    Defending Player B blocks with a 0/4.
    OR
    Defending Player B blocks with a 0/5.

In both situations, defending creature dies. In situation 1, defending Player B blocks with a 0/4, takes a minimum of 1 trample damage. Does the second hit go to the defending player? I'm pretty sure it doesn't, but I want to cover all bases here, especially considering creature of Player A has already begun doing damage to the player, I want to know if that changes things.
In situation 2, the same thing happens, except there is no damage dealt to defending player in first attack. Does the creature stop there?
Also, suppose we have lifelink instead of trample as the keyword.
If he blocks with a 0/5, is the full lifegain in effect, as if it were a 0/6 and necessitated the second attack?

It's because I only get sleeves with images on them lol
I like my decks to be purty.
I have a set of angel sleeves (60), a set with black scales on them (100) for Oona, a set with all the mana symbols kind of tan-looking with the swamp symbol in the middle (100) for Alara, a set with what looks like a Nazgul on it (100) for Prossh, and a set with a flaming bird/phoenix on it (100) for Feldon. (not a dragon haha)
    I'm fairly poor
I'm actually balls deep in credit debt on Amazon because of mah addiction. Most of my Magic stuff I buy with credit debt, my refund checks, and from working on campus/at mcdonalds (blurgh).
And yeah, I've already started posting all over the place with rulings questions, soliciting and giving help, etc.

Hello! I'm not sure if this is the right place, but I do have a question.
Here's what I'm looking to do:
I play casual EDH, and I have a Feldon of the Third Path deck. I like to have foil commanders, but obviously Feldon was never printed as a foil, as he was a new card printed for the red EDH deck and was never printed in another format to my knowledge. I would like to, if possible, find a means to foil this card.
    HOWEVER
I'm not looking to print him on another card. (i.e, the method where you scrub off another *****ty foil you have with acetone and just print on that) I have no printer (aside from the school computer center printer at my college, which is probably a big no-no) but plenty of janky foils. Is there any way to foil him without making a counterfeit? I'm aware that a fake foil version of him won't be tournament legal, I just want to use it to play with my friends. I like the artwork on it, and I think he's make a cool foil. Thanks!

I have a total of four at the moment. I have a thing where I am wholly unable to play Magic unless I sleeve the deck, hence I only own how many ever sets of 100 sleeves I own haha.
I have a Child of Alara, a Prossh, Skyraider of Kher, an Oona, Queen of the Fae, and a Feldon of the Third Path.
I have a non-EDH that's more a deck I made for my girlfriend to learn Magic. It's a token spawn G/W Avacyn deck themed around giant uncounterable creatures and cards that exclusively depict women. (I.e. Thalia, Avacyn, Emmara Tandris, Trostani, Crusader of Odric, etc.) Her 'meta' is her brother and his friend Jayden who both play casually and typically play Dimir with lots of counters.

I like your avatar, I'm actually considering making a Jhoira of the Ghitu EDH as soon as I find a card to replace her in my Child of Alara one haha. Definitely up there in one of my favorite cards. I'm gonna make it basically revolve around board wipe and big creatures. I.e. play something hella extreme like Worldfire or Decree of Annihilation with a suspended creature.

My avatar is my cat sitting in between my arms while I play PS3. He literally always does that.

Well, I always seem to find myself getting linked here whenever I google random niche rulings questions in the middle of a game haha, so I decided to join! I'm a little low on the 'people to play with' department, so I decided I'd come here to talk about Magic, since I find myself at a loss for people to talk to. I was fairly active under Tappedout, but I found myself never receiving constructive suggestions for my decks I'd throw together. I'm still feeling it out in a sense regarding the non-rulings sections, and I am a little hazy on typical forum etiquette, often finding myself either posting repeat threads, finding myself in the wrong sections, etc. etc.
Trying my best to avoid that haha.
I also enjoy that there seems to be more understanding of casual playstyles here than in my typical setting, which is occupied almost exclusively by Spikes.
(I'm a little more of a Johnny haha)

I can never have fun with overly competitive meta-gaming/extremely competitive games i.e. League of Legends, as I solely play virtually everything to have fun. That being said, of course winning IS fun, but it's just as much about the deckbuilding/characterbuilding/etc. or whatever any particular game entails for me.
    I'm a filthy casual and proud! :p

Also I heard you had snacks. Cookie

    ~Thanks for the answer ISBPathfinder!
