Magic is successful, at least in part, because there's no pretense that everyone deserves to play every format -- that everyone is entitled to be able to afford every card. Aside from playtesting, where it's okay to scribble on a plains just to see if the deck plays better with an alteration or not, I don't support proxies. I don't like the idea of proxie tournaments. I don't care if formats die because people can't afford to play them. I limit my Magic to what I can afford. Everyone should do likewise. There's a reason my Commander deck doesn't contain an Imperial Seal, and it's not because my Sharpie's all dried up. Good for Wizards. Standards are good.

BaronCappucino, your location is stated as hell, and I'm curious if you got there because you kicked the chair under your corporate noose?

Magic is a beautiful idea, and there is room in the community for proxies. Proxy tournaments are just proof that there is a serious under printing of many cards, and it's a real problem for the game because more people could be playing. If it weren't for proxies, myself and many others I know wouldn't even play this game. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind supporting the game and the people involved, but the "not everyone deserves to be able to play with every card" attitude is pure poison.

Magic is better when everyone is having fun. Games should be won through skill, not on one's income.

Have any of you heard the NPR report on Magic? It was very interesting for the 15 minutes it was on, and talked about how Magic eluded the fate of Beanie Babies. It did so because it created a market and then gained control of it, which was a good thing because it ensured that we get to talk about this today. The bad side of this bargain was also that... they control the market.

However, luckily for us, this is a game, sold by a game company. NPR included sound snippets of people opening cards like Black Lotus and Ugin, and you could literally feel the joy through the grainy audio. Then NPR hit upon something I knew; but never fully realized: instead of sleeving the Ugin and throwing it in a vault somewhere, the player decided to use it.

We've known there have been chase rares in each set for a while. The fact that the market WOTC controls (the primary, secondary, and tertiary) is tilted in a way that makes it so that we can pull them and use them in a draft, have been, and will continue to, means that even though WOTC's hands are tied for their fad-era sins, they still want cards in peoples hands. The collectors may have funded the beginning of the game, but now they are ruining it for everyone. Wizard's hands are really tied and I have a feeling that they would abolish the reserved list if they could. The second printing of Tarmogoyf is a step in the right direction and should be taken as a sign from Wizards about what a tight line they walk.

That said, combining inflation, pack mark up, and increased print runs I'd still say Tarmogoyf will stay where it is. NPR mentioned that they kept printing magic cards until shops eventually sold them at retail value, and I think they're applying a more evolved and even finer level of control on the secondary market now. In every industry there are tiers, (a system of extracting the most money possible from a given market) and Tarmogoyf will remain tier 1 because it's needed at tier 1.

it's typical limited stuff but that's ok. I'll play the Vial in draft any day. The zombie turtle... not so much. It's sad to see that Meandering Towershell went from bad to worse, but at least it's "faster" now.

You would think that a zombie turtle would move more slowly than a normal turtle.

You'd think so, but maybe then you'd also think that a vial of dragonfire would do more than 2 damage.
    /oh well

Maybe we selected from the 1000 year old out of date stock?

apparently so. I hope their wine is better than their dragonfire.

On a side note, I want to make a new wine and call it dragonfire wine.

On topic, is this the first time black got a 1/6?

Turn 1 perma-prowess end gamer that's immune to all of your wraths? I'm ok with this. It shouldn't need evasion or protection in counterwrath.dec. This card enables a very, very mean deck.

This and Damnable Pact are amazing! I have a multiplayer RDW that will run one or two of these for sure. If you survive the round, you probably win in a deck full of bolts and price of progress.

This is an excellent card. I'll be running it in a few decks. Maga in EDH will love this.

  • posted a message on ELDER DRAGONS ARE BACK!!!!! is that a good thing?
Why can't we look forward to this, that we get Elder Dragons that aren't dead? First, isn't an age qualifier kind of weird in the first place. I mean really -

    Elderly Ultimatum

All Elders you control get +2/+2.

Untap all Wheelchairs you control. They gain trample until end of turn.

I know it's supposed to be like Lords, but I can't get this out of my head. If it's here to stay, I guess I don't care if I see it on other stuff either.

Think about all the lands you can now drop at instant speed.

Dryad Arbor? Glacial Chasm? Kessig Wolf Run? Maze of Ith? Contested Cliffs? Dark Depths? Minamo? Nykthos?

Instant speed nonbasic landfall shenanigans at 2 mana + skullcrack? I love it.

It's cards like this that make me miss the Tribal supertype, even though it was messy. The interaction with dragon cost reduction would've made this a great card.

I personally love DFCs. DFC walkers are just a good thing, for so many reasons. I do think there will be other non planeswalker DFCs in origins, not related to the planeswalkers, but to the player. I'm actually worried that Lilliana is too easy to flip... but I'm thinking the others aren't as easy to flip, and that's why she was chosen as the Origins preview card.
