A New and Exciting Beginning

The End of an Era

So I went 3-1 at locals. I am very very happy with my build, and the only things I would change are adding another Distortion Strike, and adding Hurkyl's Recall in the Sideboard. But it was fun and awesome and I wouldn't change how it went. My loss was to a Red Green land destruction deck that mained Blood Moon and a bunch of other hate cards against Infect. He won with Stormbreath Dragon. He was actually undefeated at the end of the day, so I have to congratulate him on that.

My list is in my signature.

OK, so I guess I'm an hour early for work today... So I'll just come up with a list here on my phone. Thus is what I am thinking:

    4 Elf
    4 Myr
    4 Necropede
    1 Skite
    3 Spirit Guide

    4 Assault Strobe
    3 Blessing
    4 MooK
    4 Groundswell
    3 Vines
2 Gitaxian Probe (This feels like it could easily something else.)
    1 Dismember

    4 Inkmoth
    4 Heath
    4 Foothills
    1 Pendelhaven
    2 Stomping Grounds
    2 Forest

    A couple things:

The spirit Guides are to speed up the deck so that there are more turn 2 kills. It also allows you to tap out and still use Blessing, which is why there are 3 Blessings in the deck as apposed to 2 or none. It let's you play your 2 cost Artifact infecters on turn 1. It is just overall pretty good, so I like it in here.

There is no Ghor Clan Rampager in here. I ha e no idea how to put him in. I like the idea, but he DOES require 2 mana so maybe not.

Flesh//Blood is also not in here. I also like that idea, but I don't think it's where this deck wants to be. But I could also be wrong, so please discuss.

Keep in mind that this is an All-in-one version. It isn't designed to play a long game. I'm sure it could sometimes, but that's not the intent. That's another reason that the guides are in here. I want to kill on turn 2 consistently.

Anyways, I'm looking forward to the feedback. Oh yeah, could GutShot be played to make sure they have no early turn blockers?

So I'm thinking of just experimenting with RG Turbo Infect. Tomorrow I have a locals, so I don't have to take it as serious as a bigger tournament. I know that there are going to be a lot of Grixis players and I think that I should just power through them as apposed to go get long because that's when we lose. So if I just blow my load in the first 2 turns, they shouldn't be able to do anything. I have a build with Necropede, Ichorclaw Myr, Simian Spirit Guide, Assault Probe, and 4 Blessings that I think would be nice to run. However, the build is not optimal, I have no experience with it, I'm not sure if the idea would work, and I don't have enough time to test between now and tomorrow. I'll post a build later and I'll tell you guys how I do at the tournament.

Has anyone ever tried this before? Do you think I should try out a Blue splash for Agent? Do you have opinions or builds? It would be really useful if I could get some quick suggestions before I try this.

Can you post a link to the info? It would be nice to see what the field looked like.

Also, I don't think that I'll be able to bring myself to play Sylvan Scrying...

I don't think that we will have to worry too much about Living End. I think that people played it only because Eldrazi was everywhere and it had a good match up against it.

As for Spell Snare, I have no idea. We have a bunch of counters already, so it would have to be better than both Pierce and Dispel to run it. I'd have to test with it, but it seems like a strong sideboard card, especially since it can stop Skites and Melira... God damn Melira...

Yeah, I was just kinda wondering. I'm feeling pretty confident with my build.

The locals I go to is full of Gratis Control. What are some sideboard cards for that match up?

IDK, I can't bring myself to play either Serum Visions, or 21 lands. My Dryad Arbor hates me because I always draw it or it is always removed and I'm out a land. I may try this list with 2 Mutagenic Growth and 2 Apostle's Blessing in place of the 2 lands and the 2 Visions.

Are we concerned about Artifact hate? Because I was looking at my IRL list and it still has Corrupter in it. Should we be maindecking that anymore?

If the meta becomes control heavy, maybe BG Infect is the way to go. It's much more resilient to those decks.

So this right here is my current Infect deck: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/02-10-15-modern-infect/

I want to add some of these cards, but I don't know what I should add/take out, and I don't know which combination of cards to use:

    Slip Through Space/ Distortion Strike
    Rancor
    Spell Pierce
    Wild Defiance

I want the Slip/Strike for the matchups that they have a bunch of blockers, like Abzan, Zoo, and any other Aggro deck out there. The Rancor is for almost the same reason, but to go over the top of the creatures. I have never really liked Rancor though, so maybe not that. Spell Pierce I want for the knowledge that I am not helpless in the current metagame to removal spells, or to know that I can counter stuff. Lastly, Wild Defiance is a beast when dropped. It is almost always the pump spell you need, with the added benefit of laughing at Chalice. And I like that Idea.

I don't want to squeeze all of them into the deck, but I would like to have some. The cards that I am thinking may be able to be taken out are 1x Become Immense, 1x Blessing, 1-2x MooK, or 1x Twisted Image.

Basically I think that the meta is going to be one of two thing: Almost all linear aggro decks that are going to do everything that they want to do without thinking about what the opponent wants to do, plus Abzan Toolbox. OR almost all control because of the unbannings and the fact that everyone wants to play Sword now... Plus Abzan Toolbox.

Either way, the Abzan matchup really sucks. So I am almost thinking that the change should be more targeted towards that, with a lot of Control hate in the sideboard.

So let me know what you guys think. I am going to a little tournament on Tuesday next week with Infect, so that will be interesting.

Oh yeah. More narrow than Opression and Emptiness are in yugioh, but that would definitely be considered a floodgate.

So I was originally a Yugioh player before magic, and in the competitive scene, we called cards like Chalice "Floodgates." effects that would basically shut down a mechanic of the game, or cards that would render whole decks obsolete by playing them.

They wound up being given so effective that we would as them in the main deck even if the card itself was bad for us. The trick was to go off or make a push and then activate it. I am wondering if this idea could be applied to Magic. What do you guys think?

I feel like the upcoming meta is going to be full of decks which Want to race. So I think that the meta will push infect to a lower percentage of the meta than usual because our 50 50 match ups will be everywhere.

So to get the most use out of AV, you want to play it on turn 1. Our turn 1 is more important to us that almost any other deck's because we are trying to go really fast. So ideally, we want to play an Elf or an Inkmoth. Or maybe even a Hierarch. AV is just too durdly for us.

As far as the ban list goes, I am not too sure that we are going to have to worry about Sword of the Meek with Thopter Foundry because it is just too slow to have any real affect on how we play the game. However, if we do have to sift trough tokens, do you think that we will have to start maining Slip Through Space or Distortion Strike?

It is way too early to tell anything because nobody has broken anything yet, but I am really hoping that Infect gets the spotlight this format.

Yeah basically Become Immense does the job better. It gives you more pump and if you can play a 4 cmc card, you should be able to play BI with backup. That should only be 2 mana.

Also, piracy charm is awesome from what I remember from the format before Eldrazi. Maybe it will be good next format. Now is that weird time which we are just kinda waiting for the deck to leave.
