Quote from MorrainTheCorruptorYou know the funny thing is after I posted this I looked at the card again, went crap I did read the rules wrong! I was thoughtless when I read this (ergo didn't realize complete rules of rituals). Oh well accidents happen! What are your thoughts on Tormented Soul?
It's an unplayable card. There's no 2 ways about it really. First of all, it's important not to think of this as something that you'll always draw on turn 1. Even if it were, at a 20 tun clock per player, it's not exactly impressive. Still, the card becomes exponentially worse for every turn that passes. Like, you draw this on turn 5 and you 100% ripped something worse than any land or any spell in your deck (castable or not). As a standalone spell it's just not powerful enough to significantly affect the board and that's why I would never field it myself.
Now, I get what it "can" do. If you throw a Loxodon Warhammer on it, hey, things are looking up! I get that, and I get that some % of the time you can make this card a "something." The problem is that the card is horrible in every instance where you can't beef it up. I have the choice of playing good creatures such as Vampire Nighthawk who I can beef up with good equipment to make it better. I'm fine with that because I know that my Nighthawk is still good even if it gets 0 support. What I don't like is pairing an extremely bad card with a few good ones. Even if you'll combo them together some % of the time, in every instance where you don't you're basically down a card for no good reason. Every card in your decks should matter, and this just isn't ever going to be one of those.
I do not like it and I would never recommend playing it.
8x Forest
4x Swamp
4x Overgrown Tomb
4x Temple of Malady
4x Golgari Rot Farm
4x Gilded Goose
4x Woodland Champion
4x Savvy Hunter
4x Gluttonous Troll
4x Wicked Wolf
4x Feasting Troll King
4x Golgari Signet
1x Find // Finality
4x Giant Opportunity
1x Beast Within
2x The Great Henge
Something close to this. Woodland Champion is the first card in the deck that should be replaced if cuts are needed. Giant Opportunity is the second.
Witch's Oven + Cauldron Familiar, Chittering Witch and more removal/interaction can be added as desired. Beast Within tends to be my go-to removal spell in G/x decks because it's relatively cheap and hits anything so I'd play 4 of those before mucking around with virtually anything else. Abrupt Decay is also stellar but quite costly at this point which is the only reason I don't have 2 copies included.
My favorite curve in the deck is turn 1 Goose, turn 2 make a food, turn 3 Giant Opportunity, turn 4 The Great Henge + Gluttonous Troll or any other spell. It's not an overly common draw or anything but it's hilarious.
Cauldron Familiar + Chittering Witch is an extremely powerful removal engine in these types of shells so if your meta is filled with small dorks I highly recommend it. You don't even need to add Witch's Oven (and/or you can run a small number of copies) to make it work either.
The card is busted in Affinity/Bogles decks and will definitely be a $2.00 card someday. I'm grabbing whatever copies I can for bulk values for trade/buylist fodder down the road.
Every Blue deck can play 4 of these no questions asked. The effect is absurd. Love this card as a long-term hold. When Foils bottom out I'm going to be all over them.
I don't mean this maliciously but I laughed way too hard at this given that FoTD is already banned lol. Needless to say I'm willing to double-down on my initial assessment . Still, I maintain that Field of the Dead is a messed-up Magic card and that people should snag chap copies when they can. It's going to see tons of play in EDH and Modern (much less in Modern but still a competitive inclusion) while being a casual all-star. I absolutely love the long-term trajectory of this card's value.
Fires of Invention allows you to ignore color requirements.
Or if you're behind on board you can find Languish/Damnation/Pestilence. Or if you need more gas you can find Syphon Mind. Or if you need an immediate answer you can find + cast Massacre for free. Or if you need some hate you can find Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet/Leyline of the Void. Dimir House Guard brings so much consistency to the deck that it's not even funny.
Oh good point lol. You're right as rain.
Just so we're clear I specified that I was talking about the special versions of the card. Extended art copies and such. I don't expect those to dip much since most people don't pimp out their Standard decks. I completely agree that regular copies of the card are best left until rotation. With respect to EDH playability I agree with you; I don't think that it's an especially powerful card. However, I still maintain that it will be part of the top 2 most played cards in the set alongside Arcane Signet. Power-level won't drive the price but demand will. Right or wrong tens of thousands of EDH decks are going to include it and that's what makes the "pimp" versions of this card such safe investments.
Cyclonic Rift wants to know your location.
Sure it does! You just tap your 5 lands and pay the Kicker cost. It's not like they're doing anything else :P.
Brawl Decks
Dump asap. The next wave of these will be gargantuan and prices will tank. If you have any Arcane Signets get rid of them asap because they're going to plummet. Get whatever you can for whatever you have. Once the next wave hits Arcane Signet will be a solid pickup but it's too much of a known quantity to make anyone rich so don't go too deep on them. Much like Sol Ring they'll be reprinted into oblivion and settle in the 3-5 range. Still great trade fodder and perfect for any EDH deck but this isn't a golden ticket or anything. Long term the best of the Brawl Commanders will be Alela, Artful Provocateur which could push staples such as Skullclamp, Anointed Procession, Bident of Thassa, Coastal Piracy and Divine Visitation even higher. Also, the fact that her deck comes with Smothering Tithe makes it the most profitable by a sizable margin. Alela currently goes for around 10, Signet is around 10, Tithe is like 8, so that's $28.00 already from just 3 cards! Won't stay like that forever but there's a reason why these are being gobbled up and sold for parts.
Throne of Eldraine
Generally speaking the ToE Collector's Boosters were opened in obscene quantities which have flooded the market with product. Prices are low and realistically stand to dip a bit further since I don't expect there to be nearly as much demand for a premium Standard set that most people envisioned. Still, as far as we know "this is it" in terms of supply so don't expect prices to stay low forever. This isn't going to be like Ultimate Masters or anything.
Fabled Passage will be the most played card from the set and "special" versions (foils, extended art, etc.) won't be getting much cheaper since most of the Collector's stuff has already been opened. It will dip as rotation looms a year from now but not by an insane margin. If you can get any good ideals (20% off etc.) this will probably be a decent time to grab them.
The non-Red Castles are all great pickups if you can find them in the $1.50 range. Good trade fodder, good playables, they'll all gain value over time, etc. The special versions are also solid investments that aren't likely to dip much further.
Mirrormade and Faeburrow Elder seen like the standout specs. Copy spells always gain substantial value over time and tend to settle around 5 bucks and you can current acquire playsets of Mirrormade for 4. Faeburrow Elder I've seen as low as 50 cents but the card is nuts in EDH for the same reasons as Bloom Tender. Turn 1 Elvish Mystic, turn 2 Faeburrow Elder, turn 3 [Commander] + [Spell] is always a busted sequence. Midnight Clock is a decent target if you can get them for 25 cents but the card has been panned by the EDH Community as far as I can tell.
With respect to Uncommons, I'm buying/trading for as many Deafening Silences, Drown in the Lochs and Syr Konrad, the Grims at bulk prices as I can get. Foils, non-foils, everything since it's all free money. Others that I'm trying to grab for bulk prices and/or cheap foils are things like Tournament Grounds, Inspiring Veteran, Heraldic Banner, All that Glitters, Into the Story and Kenrith's Transformation. There's currently tons of supply and very little demand for these cards so if you keep your eyes peeled you can essentially grab them for free and they're all going to rise to "real card" prices.
In terms of Commons Mystic Sanctuary is going to be the most sought after card in the set so try and grab copies/foils for bulk prices. It's not going anywhere but up so I'm grabbing them at bulk prices wherever I can. The runner-ups are Witch's Cottage and Thrill of Possibility which are significantly less powerful and exciting.
Commander 2019
Expect another big wave of product to hit the shelves and for card prices to tank even further. Dockside Extortionist and K'rrick Son of Yawgmoth haven't hit their bottom yet so I'd hold off on buying them for the time being. The 3 new cards that I'd recommend trying to trade for/acquire cheaply are Bone Miser, Ohran Frostfang and Idol of Oblivion since these are best "money makers" from the set in terms of long term gains. I've been able to grab playsets of Bone Miser for less than 2 bucks a pop and I fully expect it to be a $5.00 card this time next year. Safe reprint investments include Chaos Warp, Bojuka Bog, Reliquary Tower which can often be snagged for 1-2 bucks and always rebound to 3+ within 6 months. More good trade/sell fodder.
Core 2020
The top 3 cards from the set are Field of the Dead, Vilis, Broker of Blood and Scheming Symmetry as the distant 3rd. Field is about to get banned in Standard so grab them on the cheap if you can for EDH. Vilis, Broker of Blood is going to tank once Game Night 2019 hits so grab some if you missed the boat the first time around. These cards will tank hard then steadily rise over time so be sure to grab them as soon as they flat-line. Scheming Symmetry has already bottomed out so if you can snag them for 3 bucks or less go for it. Other decent specs are Lotus Field ($4.00), Shared Summons ($1.00) and Icon of Ancestry ($1.50). Lastly, Veil of Summer is a bonkers Magic card and will continue to rise until it's reprinted. I don't think you'd lose money if you bought them for $6.00 and traded/flipped them 6 months from now but I'm personally shying away from that one at this point.
Modern Horizons
This set was printed to oblivion and is still being opened which is why prices have done nothing but fall. Still, I think that Generous Gift, the non-Green Signets (Talisman of Creativity, Talisman of Conviction, Talisman of Hierarchy) and all of the sac lands (Nurturing Peatland et al.) are good investments. The signets you'd want to grab for 50 cents or less, Gift no more than buck and the lands you'll have to pay "market value" so to speak but they've been stagnant for awhile now and I don't see them dipping much further than they already have. I can't envision a world 12-18 months from now where you could regret having bought a playset of Fiery Islets for $9.00 a pop.
Game Night 2019

There's no money in these terrible decks so don't buy them. This will tank the price of Vilis, Broker of Blood who is extremely popular in EDH so try to grab some of those on the cheap. RIP my spec on those :(. Fiendish Duo and Earthshaker Giant both seem like potential specs if they can be grabbed cheap enough but they won't bottom out for close to a year so feel free to ignore them for now.
Game Night 2018
https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/news/introducing-magic-game-night-and-updated-gift-pack-2018-08-27
Prices for Rot Hulk, Goblin Goliath and Avatar of Growth are going to bottom out once the last Game Night 2018 stock is dumped to make room for Game Night 2019. Anyone still looking to grab them will have their best opportunity to do so. I'm personally trying to grab Rot Hulks at 5 bucks and Avatar of Growths at 2.50 since I expect them both to experience significant gains over time.
As far as I'm aware all 4 triggers trigger concurrently and can be stacked in any order but when in doubt it's best to post these types of questions on the rules forum.
Glen Elendra Archmage is a superb choice so I'll +1 that suggestion. Card is amazing at protecting you from any spell that matters. It's also much better than Ertai in games where things are going poorly and/or you're behind.
Tutors such as Burning Wish, Cunning Wish, Fae of Wishes and Mastermind's Acquisition are obscene because they enable you play every card that you own. Just fetch + cast the spell immediately for degenerate value. This is the best of all worlds because you don't have to pick; you just get to play with everything .
Sphinx of Lost Truths is my current go-to 5 drop over things like Mind's Eye because a 3/5 flier that draws 3 cards is pretty busted. You do have to pay the Kicker cost but that's largely irrelevant.
Make sure to play something like Castle Vantress in your manabase to act as a mana sink. The card has been stellar for me in my testing. Search for Azcanta works well too.
Goblin Goliath and Inspired Sphinx are both mana sinks that scale well in multiplayer so be sure to check them out. I don't know why MTG Salvation doesn't have them added but just google them.
If you want a 1-card win condition use Godo, Bandit Warlord + Helm of the Host. Turn 6 you cast Godo, tutor Helm, pay 5 to equip Helm, swing with the Token, untap the token and repeat ad nauseam.
Duel or MP? If MP, have you been using Chittering Witch? You're getting a scolding if you forget to include her in your MP Woodland Champion deck >:( ! Gluttonous Troll would also be acceptable if you have uses for food. Namely Wicked Wolf who is a disgusting combination of Flametongue Kavu and Progenitus. That card in INSANE lol. I play 4 of them in all of my food decks.
Nope. If I wanted more cheap removal I would toss in a couple more.
That's fair and fine. There's room to add more removal and/or blockers.
The deck can realistically be any colors and Grixis is a great combo.
This is a fantastic PWer deck and I routinely play versions that include them. The only reason why I tend to dislike them is because they're extremely difficult to protect but that's trivially easy when you get to cast multiple spells per turn. You can do some extremely nutty things with Mastermind's Acquisition and/or Fae of Wishes where you setup combos such as Doubling Season + Liliana, Dreadhorde General or Chandra, Awakened Inferno + Jokulhaups. The Elderspell, Contagion Engine and Planewide Celebration (Proliferate 4x for instant PW ults) can also work too. Heck, even if you throw "I win" combos out the window there's nothing wrong with Damnation + Nicol Bolas, Dragon-God on turn 5 or assuming that you went Fires of Invention + Damnation on turn 4 then turn 5 can easily be Nicol Bolas, Dragon-God + The Eldest Reborn. Don't forget about Karn's Bastion either because PWers love Proliferate and you have plenty of mana to spare.
Burning Wish, Mastermind's Acquisition and Fae of Wishes are definitely the best cards to be playing in Fires of Invention decks if anyone wants to build something ultra-cutthroat because then you can literally play with any card in your collection. After all, you get to tutor and cast the spell on the same turn. So you can build a deck full of tutors, Fires, ramp, etc. and then use a pure Wish "board" to play the perfect spell every turn since your deck will be playing 12+ 0 mana Demonic Tutors that can fetch any card in Magic (that you own). So if you want the meanest possible Grixis build there you go. It's stupidly powerful but also horribly unfun to play against .
