So my younger brother and I went to Walmart today and decided to try MTG for the first time. We bought the Battle Pack (or something like that, it was like ($9.98 before tax, comes with 2 semi random mini decks and 2 packs). We know hardly any of the rules, but we managed to "play" a little. The game seems fun, but it is also very intimidating to us, since there seems to be so many rules, terminology, and effects! I'm wondering if someone here could he so generous as to explain the basic rules of MTG. What is a token? Give me all the basics. We want to buy more stuff, but the game is so complicated, I don't know if we can handle it. We both have been playing Pokemon Trading Card Game for the last 2 years, and we are both very good at it. We wanted to try something new, and MTG seems neat, but extremely complicated. I get the whole lay one land per turn, tap cards to "use" them, use mana for spells and what not. What are the formats or rotations like? Which cards are legal? I'd be nice if someone could go in depth on the exact happenings during turns. Any help would be great. Oh, and some good cards I have already are:
Legion Loyalist (holo-foil)
Gates (don't remember the exact names, but they can provide two different kinds of mana, but one per turn)
