Are we really on page 3 of this thread without someone pointing out <what a colossal d-bag the OP is>? Really?

Your friends are playing lands that have the potential to be bad if bounced/destroyed... and your reaction is "I should build an entire deck to punish this"?

In my view, games should be played for fun, whether you're doing it competitively or not. Land destruction/bounce should be used for utility lands like Volrath's Stronghold or Kessig Wolf Run. Destroying someone's karoo? Really? Don't be that guy.

And making a land destruction deck in EDH is the ultimate "that guy" move.

REALLY glad I'm not in OPs playgroup.

    Hello,

I have a problem where I compulsively make EDH decks. My friend and I have collaborated on over a dozen so far, and this forum community in particular has been extremely helpful in that regard. So I turn to you again, my friends!

I want to make a black/red deck but am having some trouble. It's currently a b/r vampire tribal, which is fun if you get a decent hand and curve out and very unfun if that isn't the case. There are b/r effects I'm interested in using, namely:

    Spiteful Visions
    Kederekt Parasite
    Teferi's Puzzle Box
    Underworld Dreams

The problem I'm having is that I want to make it sort of gradual and grindy, slowly pinging people... but not get hated out immediately ("let's agree to kill this guy and then go back to our multiplayer game, okay? pact?").

This led me to consider building it in a "don't hit me" direction, with cards like Dread and... that enchantment that does the same thing whose name I forget. I'm not really sold on the effectiveness of those cards in EDH, however (I feel like they are fairly easy to play around).

Anyway, I thought I'd ask all of you for ideas for any of the following: cards, decklists you'd suggest consulting, or the feasibility of this in general.

    Misc.:

    - Thinking I'd like Malfegor as the commander. Could be talked into Lyzolda, but I think her activate cost is too much for too little. Maybe I'm wrong!

    - Deck will be for multiplayer

    - That said, we use the French 1v1 ban list for our decks because it is like 40 million times more reasonable than the official ban list

    Thanks so much!

Best idea I've seen on these boards relating to this is to make the general Damia, then include synergistic parts of U and G, such as Bloodbond March,
Sphinx of the Chimes, Lead the Stampede, Tribal Forcemage and other good U and G things (counters, ramp, etc). Also some cool BG stuff like Jarad's Orders and Deadbridge Chant. I think Damia's a good choice (beyond the colors) because she'll help refill your hand with rats.

Also make sure you include Brainspoil so you can tutor for Thrumming Stone!

A WB general that can lead all the W and B clerics.

A RBG general that has synergy with Insects/Spiders/Rats.

With so many flicker/blink effects, have you considered more creatures with ETB triggers, like Mulldrifter?

EDIT: DERP Now I see Mulldrifter in your list, but I was really wondering if there were similar creatures you were considering that didn't make the cut.

I think the easiest first steps would be to:

    1. Increase creature quality. You don't need super expensive creatures to improve upon stuff like Dimir Guildmage. If I were building this, I would ditch both guildmages, the Belltower Sphinx (not good enough for edh, imo), Circu, Dimir Lobotomist (too slow), Oona's Prowler, Vedalken Entrancer, Mistbind Clique, Fiend of Shadows, possibly some others. There's just better stuff around. Like Shadowmage Infiltrator, for instance.

    2. I'm not convinced one-off mill cards like Glimpse the Unthinkable and Tome Scour are worth it. I'd rather put Paranoid Delusions on something with evasion, or use trepanation blade... stuff that repeats. I don't think stuff like Glimpse gives you enough value for a card slot.

    3. Keys to succeeding in 1v1 Commander is keeping your curve low and finding card advantage wherever possible; I'd look into maybe lowering your mana curve a bit.

    Keep us posted!

I actually messed around with making a deck like this earlier today. I think Mirko Vosk would be a better commander since he costs less, but that's just me.

Also, if you want to win via milling only that's cool, but Guiltfeeder would be good in here (I see you already have Consuming Aberration, so possibly just an oversight?).

Trepanation Blade also worked well for me in testing.

That deck is hot. Not sure how it does well in multiplayer, but I like it alot Wink

    *facepalm*

Yeah I mean I guess if you/your playgroup hate fun, this would be the deck for you.

    This thread is an abomination.

Did you try running Forbid? I've found that it's essentially a finisher in many cases.

I voted yes because I support it, even if I can't play with it.

I play 1v1 on MTGO because multiplayer takes ****ing forever.

Turn 1 Sol Ring/Mana Crypt is such a ridiculous advantage it just wastes everyone's time.

If you want to have fun in 1v1 Commander, I really think you are best off with the French list.

I like the Pillaging Horde idea. And The Weatherlight would be an awesome deck and I would make it but not using the whole crew seems really lame. I mean especially if you can't have the ship's navigator! Frown

I put a "lame" theme deck together on workstation a while back, called it "The Pumpkin Patch". Of course, Reaper King was in charge. My vision is a spooky pumpkin patch on Halloween. Everything was plant themed or at least looked like one like Creakwood Liege. Horrors and Spirits would be ok too, especially considering lots of spirits coming out in the new sets.

No expensive land base needed, it's mostly green/white, you just utilize lots of forests and greens ramp spells to fetch the others, along with some artifact mana and that you don't even have to produce all colors to cast the king, it works ok.
It also uses some fungus/saproling/token production.

    Some Creatures:
    Besides several obvious treefolk..
    .

    Some Non Creature Plant Spells:
    .

All Hallow's Eve is a nice touch for the Halloween feel, and of course, Scarecrows are always welcome.

Ha! As I was writing the other response this happened. I like this! I feel like there's definitely something here. Like I said, I'm going to see what I can come up with.

Maybe birds with Kangee, Aerie Keeper?

This is not a bad idea; maybe it can be expanded to flight? Has the added bonus of not being blue/black.

@Sanity's_Eclipse Scarecrows are waaay cooler than birds! My worry is that despite there being 20-odd scarecrows, non-creature spells that have to do with Scarecrows might be too scant (have to get to 60ish non-lands). Although... Raven's Crime, Murder of Crows... I'll go work on this and see what I can come up with.

What else ya got, folks? (and thanks again!)

If you have enough people in your playgroup, I strongly recommend playing emperor. Emperor removes a lot of the choices in multiplayer; Guard A has to attack the guard opposite him or the game won't progress. This might ease some of the frustration.

I mean, FFA Magic is just an exercise in politics + topdecking. Skill has less to do with it than normal.

I don't like to play aggro decks in EDH because 1) there's an invitation to overextend and then when you get wrathed or something it's hard to come back 2) aggro often means the majority of the cards you're playing are creatures, and you attack with them, leaving you with little to do on other people's turns. This means I get bored.

So if you don't want to adopt this more seasoned player's playstyle (which you've said is more effective than yours), maybe adopt a different deck that has more instants/abilities/card drawing in it so that you can be doing more things in the game. Might be more fun that way, I dunno.
