If he casts Genesis Hydra, can I cancel the hyrda and the ability altogether, or if i cancel the hydra he still gets the monster from the ability, and then can I cancel the monster being summoned from the ability if I allow they hydra to be summoned.
I counterspell it with cancel, and he swears up and down he gets the 4 1/1 Flying Hornets to swing at me for 4 in the air.
I said that would only happen if I was using a spell like Lightning Strike or Stoke the Flames on it, because I have to allow the creature into the battlefield to do the 3 or 4 damage to it in the first place, thus letting the static ability activate.
Whereas, in this case, I'm counterspelling the summoning of the creature, so he never enters the battlefield so the static ability does not trigger.
I've had this thought for a long time that I want to build a deck that uses the opponents deck against them. Sort of a good budgety deck that I can play against my friends for fun.
I pulled a clever impersonator and it seems that a deck like what I want was made to be built around this card!
I guess you could kind of call it a control deck.
If he plays a creature, I want to be able to copy it or take it.
If he plays a planeswalker, able to copy.
If he plays an spell, able to counter and/or send it back at him.
If he attacks, use it against him. (Polymorphist jest seems hilarious for this)
If he defends, use it against him. (Polymorphist again)
I had some cards picked out for a possible blue red deck w/ Impersonator, Act of Treason for taking/copying creatures and a Bident of Thassa, Polymorphist Jest combo, but had trouble putting cards around them to keep the theme of the deck going.
i like chandra a lot...she just cant do much if she on her own
the situation i was in where my friends cut was abyssmal for me trying to get creatures....i did get 2 chandra and i had no choice but to put her out and try something or to at least deviate him from swinging at me
i got a measly 2 dmg off on him before she died both times
whereas sarkhan wouldve prob had 8 dmg thru the air
and elspeth would have created six tokens prob couldve just kept defending herself until she got to -8 land and then things would turn around if i had any tokens left
anyways, i do believe chandra is amazing if she has stuff to protect her....her +1 is so good at getting a creature through to the opponent, and her -7 in a spell burn heavy deck like this usually means game over
i tried running sarkhan and elspeth on cockatrice....and it went well, had both out at the same time and elspeth wasnt letting any creatures hit her nor sarkhan...i was just creating tokens all day and burning with burn spells and sarkhan for 3 turns, it was fun
i may go all out on game 1's with sarkhan and chandra and then sideboard elspeth in when they know whats up and try to control for the 2nd win
I have thought about 2 Sarkhan and 1 Elspeth....just for the win condition.
and about the lands, yeah I'm currently running
4 Monastery (Tri)
4 Swiftwater Cliffs(R/B) - this should be Temple of
4 Wild-Scarred Crag (R/W) - this should be Temple of
6 Mountains
3 Islands
3 Plains
I am currently at 3 over on the deck list...which probably would be the deflecting palms unless I play a green deck.
Titan's Strength is too good man. Makes seeker of the way a 6/4 with lifelink, or the Goblin rabble token a 4/2, or rabble himself a 6/3, or my Mantis a 6/4 flyer. I also get to scry, for just one red mana.
So I am running your cookie cutter Jeskai Tempo deck:
4 Mantis Riders
4 Rabble
4 Seeker of the Way
4 Jeskai Charm
4 Lighting Strike
4 Stoke the Flames
4 Magma Jet
3 Deflecting Palm
2 Dig through Time
3 Titan's Strength
2 God's Willing
3 Chandra
the question is what Planeswalker's should I use?
Sarkhan is assumed to be mandatory, but he is mostly used as a 4/4 flyer, indestructible, to be a free stoke the flames on the player, if it isn't clogged up, or he's an enemy Planeswalker killer, but do I really need more burn?
Chandra is extremely popular because usually if you -7 her, it's game over.
I think Elspeth would also be a good choice because I'm not exactly creature heavy, and then if I -7 her, my Mantis rider is a 5/5. Seeker is 4/4, 5/5 with lifelink w/ spell casted. Rabblemaster is a 5/4 w/token, and his token each combat is a 3/3 goblin. Oh yeah, they'll all have flying too.
I did find a fatal flaw in my deck just the other day. It lost to an intro Abzan deck because I kept drawing burn spell after burn spell, which I was using on the creatures being cast by my opponent to keep the battlefield somewhat clear because I thought I would get a creature soon, which is how I'm supposed to play my tempo. I didn't but I did draw two of my three Chandra's, but she couldn't defend herself so she got blown up both times.
This is why I am thinking about running 1(MAYBE 2) Chandra and 2 of the other Planewalker, but I'm having trouble deciding on Sarkhan or Elspeth.
In the one instance where I lost to Abzan....Sarkhan, would have the same problem as Chandra if I get him out alone. He will more than likely die in two turns, granted that is 8 free dmg for me. On the flipside, Elspeth can create tokens, and I can use those to block for her until I can get her -7, then I have a ton of 3/3 flying tokens, if I didn't have to block with a ton of them, and all of a sudden the game has changed, even though I wasn't drawing any creatures. I could also just keep spamming her +1 and -3 to keep blockers on my side and keep their beefy creatures off the field until I can draw a Mantis Rider or something, or while I continuously burn them.
If he casts Genesis Hydra, can I cancel the hyrda and the ability altogether, or if i cancel the hydra he still gets the monster from the ability, and then can I cancel the monster being summoned from the ability if I allow they hydra to be summoned.
It was 3(me) to 5(him), with me able to swing for 8 on him the following turn.
In a desperation move, he summons Hornet Queen.

Was I right in my understanding of the rules?

Anyone got any ideas?

He is not a consistent threat. He doubles your burn card effectiveness early game, but sucks late game.
Whereas, seeker(could potentially be a 6/4 with lifelink in my deck), mantis(flying), and rabble(token, +power) are.
Once you get past turn 6-7, he is basically a meat shield, where I would much rather have seeker.
