I feel like Goblin Dark-Dweller is hell of an underplayed card... think about it, you're getting back a free spell and a 4/4 Menace body, it's the Red Snapcaster Mage. I think it's a good card for grindy matchups and a must in Skred Sideboards, it's a good card to bring in when you don't need your Relic of Progenitus.
The Eternal Scourge weren't amazing, i feel like this card could be replaced.
Round 1 : JUND 2-0 : I Blood Moon the guy, and keep the graveyard in check with Relic, and Pia does a lot of work, game 1 i Anger away two Grim Flayer which was a very good start.
Round 2 : Grixis Control : he dosent do a lot, bunch of 1 mana draw cards, i Pia and put pressure with 4/4 from Koth, while burning the creatures. Had Blood Moon both games but he fetched into basics.
Round 3 : Infect : I destroy him both game via turn 3 Blood Moon, and burn away his guys, deck was on fire !
Round 4 : Jeskai Flash : Game 1 i Blood Moon and he can't deal with Stormbreath, also Anger 2 for 1 for value, and Pia makes good blockers. Game 2 i get stuck on 3 lands, dies to Resto Angels. Game 3 i throw away a few threats and he counters them so i can play a turn 5 Dragon safely, i play a late Blood Moon that stops his manlands, he double bolts dragon then i draw Pia and put more pressure for the kill.
Fun night, Relics were amazing, honestly the deck played perfectly, not a super fan of the 2x Eldrazis, i feel like Rabblemaster could be better in the mainboard. I need to work on the sideboard also, ive not played Modern for 3 years just came back in the format.
Boo hoo hoo this set is worst Magic set ever. The rares are all jank and the set sucks bro. The mechanics are all jank and every thing in this set is garbage. At least they put full art lands in here. (sarcasm voice)
Every set has its doubters and even haters gonna hate and say this is the worst set in magic history. Isnt every set the worst set in magic to some? Hey I like this set and think that standard is gonna be different this time round. I look forward to limited and look forward to seeing what new decks popup. I cant wait for it!
Thank you, i didnt know this forum had other sane mtg players. People *****ed about Innistrad's Lili when it came out, called it horrible. People thought Delver was a trash common. 90% of players don't know how to evaluate cards.
No.... Champions of Kamigawa was the worst set. This set has some of the worst rares and mythics though. Just like the first Zendikar, i'm more excited for all the commons and uncommons. And lands.
Yes. Champions of Kamigawa's mythics were horrible...
People are all unfavorably comparing BFZ to Khans, but there are so many crap rares and mythics in Khans it's not even funny. Take away the fetchlands, and what is Khans? Siege Rhino? A couple of blue spells that got insta-banned in the non-rotating formats? The fact is that people ragged on some of the biggest hits of Khans before it was released (I specifically remember arguing with people about how Siege Rhino will replace Polukranos in every green deck, and so many people telling me that I was crazy).
tl;dr: People complain about cards that don't instantly resemble older cards that they want to play with in Standard. There's a reason why so few players are skilled deck-builders: Card evaluation is very difficult for most, but that doesn't stop those players from doing it anyway.
Anyhow, the set's fine. There are some definitely powerful cards that people are overlooking.
So Khans of Tarkir is full of crap cards ? Are you insane ? The set is filled with playables !!!
Sorin, Solemn Visitor, See the Unwritten, Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker, Dig Through Time, Anafenza, the Foremost, Siege Rhino, Monastery Swiftspear, Wingmate Roc, Rattleclaw Mystic, Hordeling Outburst, Ashcloud Phoenix, Mantis Rider, Utter End, Crackling Doom, End Hostilities, Murderous Cut, Crater's Claws, Abzan Charm and so on !
I'm happy to see a flash Journey to Nowhere. But it will likely be hard to play in standard with D-Command and costs too much for modern. (At WW it'd have been likely quite playable in both, even despite Dromoka's command.) Whatev. Gideon's possibly modern playable, but don't want to spend $20+ just to test him, ha ha.
Overall there are some interesting cards in this set and I get the sense that standard could actually change quite a bit. That said, it's very hard to see how it all plays out until we have the set reveal since it seems a lot like everything is 2 factions with a lot of interlocking mechanics. So far this inclines me mostly toward draft, since it's unlikely that cards with a high reliance in set-specific synergies can break into other formats.
On the fringe, the main things that seem to have inherent potential modern playable offhand are any well-costed devoid instants, since they can likely enhance various decks while ruining the typical color-specific hate you have to rely on in modern. If we get really unlucky - or lucky, if you have a different view - this set could make cards like Phyrexian Crusader or Apostle's Blessing completely unplayable in modern. So more Spellskites, I guess?
That said, there are two big card opportunities for modern playable cards that really really got blown and have kind of ruined the set for me.
First, Shambling Vents. I don't care what the activation cost is, if it'd been a 2/4 it'd have been instant modern playable. As a 2/3 it's just marginally better than Lavaclaw Reaches, which means not good, but maybe you play it if you can support a manland and there's nothing else. And then you just feel like Wizards spit on you when someone else plays a Celestial Colonade. Or even a Stirring Wildwood. And your manland becomes worthless.
The other thing that disappoints me is Drana not having haste in addition to her other abilities. Her abilities are solid, but she could have been a rare as stands. And without haste, she's likely utterly unplayable in modern. (Vampire Nighthawk doesn't see really any modern play, can't really see her in a different light - bolted before attacks.) But I think *with* haste she could have been an easy playable in some sort of modern deck and maybe lead to some deck-building innovation in modern. I don't even think that'd have hurt standard much outside of making any random potential haste-granting ally worse.
But whatev. Evidently people will buy this by the crate just for foil lands. I'm personally disappointed, though.
How you approach a set is completely wrong, they dont print card so they can go in a modern deck, thats absurd!!! Cards are made for standard and some cards can eventually pierce throught eternal format.
They dont go like, lets make Drana overpowered so she can go into modern.
I love this thread, its the one i put in my bookmarks so i can comeback in a few months and laugh. Every set its the same thing, you guys are terrible at evaluating cards, you probably said the same thing for mtg origins anyway.
All you guys wants are lili and snapcaster reprint... aint gonna happen...
Standard is like a huge limited pool, we play with what were giving, thats the fun of it, you guys want overpowered cards and die to them??? Having normal well rounded cards is actually healthy for the game, when they make too many powerful cards, its hurts the game.
Ive been playing standard since Tempest, each year its the same story....
Yasova Dragonclaw strikes me as a win-more card or a sideboard one-of. By the time you can get her ability off for something decent, you should already be beating face.
Prophet of Kruphix is easily one of my favorite cards. But I don't play her competitively. Because when you use her you NEED her. And anything that you NEED to win that can be waxed by a lightning strike isn't reliable enough for me.
Temur Ascendancy is awesome. But it isn't Jeskai Ascendancy. You drop J.A., you win. The end. T.A. at best gets you some shaky card advantage. And the haste thing shouldn't make a world of difference given how punchy-facy Temur already is.
Temur sans mana dorks isn't Temus at all. For SHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAME.
Temur Ascendancy is awesome indeed, it's an excellent sideboard card you want to bring it vs Mardu or Abzan heavy removal build, you then can drop hasters into their planewalkers, and they can't advance their board because they want to hold up removal-mana, it's quite effective.
Here's the version i'd like to build so far, not sure if i want to invest in the deck thought, waiting to see if people at the store take the format seriously.
You board it against aggro decks or in general, any deck that will provide you a consistent stream of creatures for it to stay alive. It's also very good against Geist since it can kill it without targeting it (in which case, you're okay losing value to kill Geist because it's hard to kill).
I really hate the fact that it's at YOUR upkeep... they can always play something else, and keep on beating you or make more tokens via Pyromancer, i'm not a fan of the card, but i like the rest of the sideboard.
