I have been thinking of a new deck to build, and I want to go a more casual but still possibly competitive route. Hellrider has always been one of my favorite cards since I played with it during Avacyn? Standard I believe. Let me know what you guys think! I am on sort of a budget, and the mana base has taken most of that budget thus far, but all input is appreciated =D
Damn man thanks for all of the input, I'm pretty new to the modern format so I don't know quite as many cards. I forgot about cavern of souls, would work well, and I would love to get aethervials they are just currently a little out or my budget. Given I normally like creature heavy decks I should probably consider snagging some.
When I get back to my computer I'll do some list changes, what would you suggest taking out?
Also how competitive do you think this list could be? I main a death and taxes type list but think this could be fun and good
I am new into Modern and have been thinking of making a tribal deck just for the fun times.
Spirits is a very uncommon tribal deck as far as I'm concerned so I figured I'd give it a shot, let me know what you guys think and if you can think of anything better!
It very much looks like a Jund Dredgevine. For what it's worth, I think it looks promising.
Also, personally I could find it meaningful to go 4/4 on Varolz and Death's Shadow. As in, go all in or null.
Lets hope it works, just ordered all of it but the vengevines overgrown tombs and bloodghasts. (my tax return went mostly to a long ass tattoo session and my sultai control standard deck or I would have gotten the whole thing hahaha)
Ah right! You know I actually knew that combo, I was like "Doesn't this combo with some golgari troll?" and I actually read Varolz' rules text, went "Well it only grants scavenge, what good is that for" and then I posted my idiot comment. I have no idea what went wrong there. Think my brain melted.
Haha everyones brain melts from time to time =P I actually redid the deck quite a bit, and I'm not sure I want to make a new thread because of how close it is to being a "dredgevine" deck, but I will post it here and let me know what you think!
Do a gatherer search. Try for green and black warriors (select type as your search, then warrior as the thing you type in) and let it's output be in ascending order. You'll find everything I would have suggested and much more besides.
To be blunt: you're in black green essentially aggro or aggro control. You don't need vials or mana dorks, because you have something better in thoughtseize, which will kill your opponents cards that would force you to run those things in the first place (primarily counters and removal spells). If you're playing in anything like a competitive meta, I would definitely maindeck all 3 scavenging ooze, possibly even a fourth. Reasoning? They shrink goyfs and nullify snapcaster mage to some degree. They also get counters of their own if you eat creatures (combat does that) which makes bramblewood paragon useful for him, too.
Ashenmoor gouger is a pretty big beefy guy...and he's also supremely bad since he costs (for this deck) BBB. Something for that kind of mana, even with vialing him (won't happen sooner than turn 4 and that's if you even have one) that can't even block will likely get you killed.
If you're going to do the warrior subtheme, why not pick a tribe that has some useful warriors? Elvish warriors or goblin warriors are pretty obvious, but you could also do potentially allies as a small subtheme. They already enter with counters and in black/green there are a couple of 2 drop allies that enter with counters, making paragon a good topdeck and the allies themselves on curve. You could even add a few more 2 power one drops like vampire lacerator which makes another option a possibility, though not immediately obvious, in mardu skullhunter. If you've already domed them, you can then get a relevant creature type on the battlefield that takes a card and has at least parity power/toughness for mana cost.
Other than that, obelisk of urd seems bad. at best it's going to come down turn 3, and that means you're wasting mana on it (and creatures) rather than swinging for the fences, which is what this deck wants to do. I will concede that wolfir silverheart as a 2 or 3 of is a great curve topper, however.
On the mana thing, with gatekeeper of malakir, have you given any thought to a couple of urborg, tomb of yawgmoth?
Urborg should definitely be a thing I forgot about that, also if you have a better set of warriors please let me know, my modern knowledge is very limited and any help is greatly appreciated. The reason I think vial will work so well is often I can use it for the creatures, while keeping mana up fot disruption and buffs
No Problem yeah u use only 2 colors.. u need no fetchlands
but AEther vial had also first to stack on as much counter.. and u use 1,2,3,4,5 CMC creatures
I made a few changes and like the list, I think it has good mana curve to go with the aethervial while being able to keep some mana up for disruption and buffs
I dont know. I think its to mana intensive. i would play 1 playset MAna Dorks. Birds of Paradise or Wall of Roots...
The Landbase is budget or? for budget is it good enough I would think if I play abrupt decay mainboard instead of batterskull (5CMC.. slow and not very well against each deck)
I had 4 birds in here at first and thought maybe with aethervial I could get away with adding more beaters maybe they should come back in. And yeah the mana is definitely budget to a degree. Catacombs are a littttle too expensive for us right Now lol I def agree with the abrupts over the batterskulls. I just used to use batterskull in standard during innistrad and it won me maannnyy games. I'm very new to modern though.
