I played against dredge on MTGO competitive league five (!!) times in a row, that was about a week ago. I think people picked up their grave hate so dredge dropped out a bit but it was definitely played online.
Elves got their Sylvan Messenger and even if Ringleader is not in Dominaria, it can make an appearance in the core set. I also feel like Matron is too good for Modern in wotcs opinion as you put the card in your hand and not on top of the library like Forerunners. We already have a 3 mana tutor in Boggart Harbinger that sees little to no play. I guess top of the library is the new tribal tutor.
Speaking of other possibilities; Sharpshooter could be introduced, but Gempalm seems like a reach as we just had a cycling set and who knows when the mechanic returns. I guess Goblin Lackey will never see the green light in Modern, but some fringe stuff like Goblin Settler or an improved Skirk Drill Sergeant could be possible. Another card I would be happy to try in Modern is Grenzo, Dungeon Warden, but it won't be in Dominaria and might never be modern legal as we speak.
I'm kinda high on Ringleader reprint, looks more realistic than Matron. Anyhow, even if we don't get anything spectacular in Dom, we still can hope for Core set to include some goblins.
I know that the metagame is about to change but regardless I published an article regarding Modern Vial Goblins, for any interested give it a read and let me know what you think about the "japanese" Modern Vial Goblins.
Yea sorry for the late reply bud, I hadn't had a chance to try it yet! I wanted to give it a go next monday but after seeing two RB Vial goblin decks in Modern, I'm set to try that instead. Always wanted to play vial goblins in modern and up to now, it was just bad.
Seeing two decks (not one) succeed in above average tournaments gave me hope. Sure, it might be outdated now but heck, I dont care. Here are the two decklists: one went 4-0 at GP Kyoto (side event probably), the second one went 4-1-1 at some weekend tournament in Hareruya (4th place or so). Bear in mind that this was last summer, but still, I would love me some vial goblins in Modern!
I feel the need to say this out loud: Firebrand is not a strictly better Mogg Fanatic, but more "a strictly better" Raging Goblin. That's a fact.
However, don't get me wrong: I'm not arguing which of the three is better or worse, just stating that Fanatic and Firebrand have differences. Some of us might play with 4 Mogg Fanatics and 4 Firebrands while others may go for 4 Firebrands and 4 Raging Goblins. It comes down to haste vs additional reach.
I believe Mogg Fanatic might be better than Raging Goblin in 8-whack decks, but in Atarka Goblins (4-whack + Atarka's Command) Raging and Firebrand might be a better fit since A-Command doesn't grant haste. I can see players going for 4-8 slots for Raging/Fireband/Fanatic, depending on their preference and build.
Speaking of Goblins, did anyone try them after RIX became legal? Cheers!
Something in-between I guess, but I like it nonetheless. If I go back to playing Goblins in Modern, I'll probably try it in addition to Fanatics (4-2 split).
4 Aether Vial
1 Tarfire
3 Mogg Fanatic
1 Legion Loyalist
2 Skirk Prospector
4 Mogg War Marshal
3 Goblin Piledriver
3 Munition Expert
2 Goblin Cratermaker
4 Goblin Matron
1 Goblin Chainwhirler
3 Goblin Chieftain
3 Goblin Warchief
1 Krenko, Mob Boss
1 Goblin Trashmaster
1 Wort, Boggart Auntie
1 Siege-Gang Commander
4 Bloodstained Mire
4 Cavern of Souls
4 Auntie's Hovel
3 Mutavault
3 Blood Crypt
4 Mountain
Also hoping for Ringleader and Gempalm!!!

Anybody care to talk about those two decks?
