Yes, I have actually considered going with BG Elves. Or Mono Red Aggro. I have been picking up packs for the hell of it while I am waiting for the ol lady to try on clothes or shop for make up and... dish liquid... whatever she spends my money on lol. I have the makings of both, but the elves seems cheaper than buying into a playset of Rabblemasters and Eidolon of the Great Revel that late in the game. Anyone think the elf tribe is poised for a come back in the new standard?

We generally try and keep speculation to a minimum given the Standard Forum Rules.

However, the private eyes over at the Rumor Mill can tell you that the plane of Zendikar has elves. If you're interested in speculating what sort of elf tribal things you may be doing in the fall, I'd do so over there.

    Thanks!

    Lugger

Woah there, buddy. Let's keep the douch baggery to a minimum, shall we? I was only asking if anyone thinks elves have a place in the new standard, not what ma or may not be coming in the fall. Further more, if you don't have anything worthwhile to add to the conversation, why but in and make a smart ass post? Just because your life revolves around this petty forum, and you have not in better to do with your time than moderate, doesn't mean the rest of us have time to read your bull*****. I have already wasted enough valueable minutes here, and if you are the calibre of people who they make moderators, I think I am done here. Go ahead and drop your little ban hammer, kido. Hope it makes you feel better.

    Thanks!

I haven't played since Theros came out, so I don't have any Khans cards (except fetches, I do have those), or the second and third sets in the Theros block.

I like to play tier 1 decks (Delver, Jund, American Control, etc.). With that in mind, what decks would you all recommend I look into that won't suffer too much from rotation or are simply not too expensive to build? I don't mind spending money on powerful decks, I just want to avoid wasting money on a bunch of cards that will rotate out soon (keep in mind, I do have most of the Theros cards, just not just not the two other sets in the block).

I would really appreciate any advice the community can give.

Yes, what this guy said. I am interested in hearing opinions about what may be worth investing in. I know there are not currently many cards in BFZ revealed, but if you were to come in right now with a limted card pool and wanted something kick ass that wasn't going to lose much in rotation, or something that was cheap enough that it didnt matter, what would you buy?

Leyline of Sanctity effectively negates burn. I like to pay mono-red burn in modern, and if this card is in my opponents opening hand it is game over. The creatures in a typical burn deck will not pick up the slack against any decent opponents deck. So it got me to thinkng. If there is an enchantment to stop burn decks, one of the oldest archetypes in magic deck history, is there something that does the same thing against counters? I know there is Vexing Shusher but it doesn't really compare. It turns hard conters into soft counters, making one mana unusable if you plan on casting anything. And it is a creature, with all the weaknesses that entails. You have to hexproof him somehow. A lot less effective compared to an enchantment which is a little harder to get rid of.

Secondly, what options, if any, are there in red to get rid of enchantments? Am I doomed to run a splash of this or that? Maybe even a more creature heavy deck?

I run Boros Heroic as well. desperate stand is my second favorite trigger next to coordinated assault. I would go with 20 lands, 18 creatures, and 22 triggers. That seemed to help my draw consistency a lot and help me to keep an imposing threat on the board. I would ditch the rabble heroic like phalanx leader and rely more on stand-alone heroics. fabled hero with his double strike is very useful.

Actually, scratch that. No discount or clearance around cape fear games. There are so many companies it is hard to keep them straight.

But as for my adventuresON order, it arrived today, Saturday. 3 days later than Strike Zone. All cards were mint condition as listed. The cards were seperated into two piles, wrapped in plastic, sandwiched in thin cardboard, and wrapped in my invoice. The only complaint I have is how long it took adventureON to ship my order. Otherwise, both companies delivered just as expected.

Strikezone is killing it! They received my order Monday morning, and here I am Wednesday afternoon sleeving the cards. The package arrived in a bubble envelope. My cards were wrapped in celophane and sandwiched between two hard plastic card protectors. All cards are in mint condition, as listed.

adventuresON may have been a little slower, but they did give me a tracking number and for less shipping than strike zone. If the USPS brings their package as quickly as the one from strike zone, I will be playing my new deck this weekend!

That is great to know about the cape fear games discount! That will come in handy thanks a lot, I am planning to order from there this weekend. They are the only shop I found selling discount supplies like binders and sleeves, which comes in real handy when you have no LGS to go rumaging through their discount bins.

Sorin is dealing with much bigger things than a mad Garruk. Garruk is a powerhouse physically, but on an open battle field, superior casting will crush him. Yes he can summon beasts, but we know Elspeth can kill things like Polukranos, World Eater, so his little beast isn't that scary. Sorin will just send a horde of vamps at it or take control of it, Bolas will make Garruk even more insane than he already is, Karn will simply exile it. Sharkan will laugh and turn into a dragon, while Ajani will create a double of Garruk and let him fight himself while he casts lightning helix.

Garruk is good in his element, tight, dark, woodlands. Outside of that and he is like Kiora on dry land.

And Icy will just freeze the water in his head. Except Garruk killed him.

Garruk is really, really good at killing people now. There's a reason he has "destroy target Planeswalker" on a basic ability. And no Planeswalker bar Bolas is immune to an axe to the face.

I'd put him in a tie for second place with Karn and Sorin. As in, whoever gets the jump on the other wins. His card is in a trifecta of I win Planeswalkers with Bolas and Karn and he's very hyped up in the DotP and Uncharted Realms (and the card game, really).

As much as I like Sorin, he hasn't actually done anything yet. Beating Tibalt doesn't count and his cards wern't overwhelming either. All we have to go on are flavortexts, his cool card image and that he's old.

    Well put. I completely concur.

    Quote from Mullerornis »
Icy also was caught by surprise, so it's by no means a good testament to Garruk's supposed strength.

Unless everyone is drugged out of their minds, even someone like Tibalt is immune to Garruk, being able to severely injure or kill him before his head gets chopped off.

Let's be honest. What type of fight is gong to start out "you go over to the far side of this field and we will cast stuff at each other". Garruk is a predator. And predators do not make deals with prey. Icy should have been prepared. Liliana is in for a nice tall can of whoop ass. Jace tasted it, he knows how bitter it is. And as for being "drugged out of their minds", well, none of the other walkers he has killed or defeated have been drugged out of their minds to my knowledge. But then maybe Jace was chasing the dragon, and Icy was smoking meth. Get it? Icy was smoking ice. Hahaha....ahhhh I slay myself sometimes.

Yep, you are absolutely right Uldan. My adventuresON package was shipped today at 7:35 pm. A full 31 and a half hours later compared to Strike Zone Online.

Same day shipping or even next day shipping would have made my business experience a bit more pleasent. I live near the east coast, so adventuresON probably couldnt be too much further from me lol. I am a patient man, but both stores seem to be mega-stores that do hight volume orders, and one got my order out much quicker. I will be buying from StrikeZoneOnline again and comparing them to the next guys. Rancored Elf has unlimited standard stock and free shipping on orders over $20. Maybe next I will compare Rancored Elf and Strike Zone.

  • posted a message on Hello from South Eastern KY
My name is Trent. I currently live in south eastern Kentucky, but I am originally from Louisville. I have played magic since 6th grade, so 1996 for me. Everyone just lost interest around me and so I bought everyones cards. But the thing is, that left nobody to play lol. I played off and on through the years, but never really found a regular game. Now there are things like FNM that make tournament play a little easier to get into, and the game seems to have gotten a kick start. Only thing is my cards are too old even for modern play. So I bought a couple boosters one night and picked up an intro pack, and I am back! But, that's not the way things are done anymore lmao. Things have changed so much it is like playing a whole new game. So that's why I made this account, just looking for community and advice!

Yeah, just too many holes in this deck. I think I might scrap it and try to ise the cards in something else. The reason I wated to maybe use this one is because this card list is almost all of my standard ready cards. But the deck isn't all that competitive even in casual play. It would take a lot of work to fix this one lol. I intend to beef it up, but only for casual play now. I don't think this will ever make it to FNM.

Thank you for you help, Nev. You have been more than helpful.

Thank you for such an informative post, Nev. I really appreciate you taking the time to school a less experienced player. Perhaps what you are saying should have been a little more obvious to me lol. And I really liked the shiney angel card, too.

I really like the idea of taking from my opponents life total and adding to mine. Following your advice, I cut a lot of fat out as you called it, and what I had left was a smaller stack of white cards and a much smaller stack of black cards. And I look at what's left and ask myself "why is there only one of cards like divine favor, and why isn't there more creatures with life link coupled with abilities like flying or intimidate"? I will have to address these issues and get back with you.

Thank you very much for the replies. The new M:tG has a lot more to it than it did when I played regularly lol. I never even seen a fat pack until last week. Two or three relevant cards you say? I guess it really isn't the deal I thought it was. I guess I will be hounding the singles bins and binders sooner than I anticipated lol. I may take a few things with me to try and sell, but it is odd how attached I am to my old cards. It is like the last piece I still have of my childhood lol. Not to mention the low prices due to reprints! But then that is a double edged sword because singles are significantly cheaper than years past. Thanks again for your advice!
