203.3. The converted mana cost of an object is a number equal to the total amount of mana in its mana
cost, regardless of color. Some effects ask a player to pay mana equal to an object’s converted mana
cost; this cost may be paid with any combination of colored and/or colorless mana, regardless of the
colors in the object’s mana cost.
Example: A mana cost of {3}{U}{U} translates to a converted mana cost of 5.
203.3a The converted mana cost of an object with no mana cost is 0.
203.3b When calculating the converted mana cost of an object with an {X} in its mana cost, X is
treated as 0 while the object is not on the stack, and X is treated as the number chosen for it
while the object is on the stack.
    My guess:
203.3c When calculating the converted mana cost of an object with a Hybrid symbol that combines generic mana ({0}, {1}, {2} and so on) and colored mana symbol ({W}, {U}, {B}, {R}, {G}) the highest possible cost is used.
I'm guessing that adding the generic mana costs to hybrid symbols, will add quite a few rules to the CompRules.

The regular way it goes is, as Xandercoon writes: you: pass, other player(s): pass, spell resolves.

If a non-active player plays something in response, it starts over roles reversed, that is you have a chance to respond to his spell.

It is a common mistake to wait and see if the opponent responds, before responding - this cannot be done under the rules; if all players have passed priority ONCE, the spell resolves (but if there are any other spells on the stack, there is another round a priorities and so on).

Note: I write spells above, but I obviously mean spells or abilities.

You're all wrong. The only logical name, what with summon obsolete, is to call it Un-play. Heh, in all seriousness, I would think that it is a completely new thing. Not just unsummon keyworded.

I think we already had the green one (pendelhaven) in the TS block.

Although it would be awesome to get something like this ;):

Oh, I love this one. Very elegant. Blood Moon + mountain is a party we all can enjoy.

Though you can make it even more elegant, by using the template from Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth. Which would make it something like:

    Shiv, Land of Fire
    Legendary Land -- Mountain
    Nonbasic lands are mountains.

Note that because the type-changing ability is applied before this card loses its abilities, it won't remove it's own type changing ability. Or rather it will "do its thing" and then be removed.

I may have been "played", but I think Wizards is trying to ease us in to a sixth color. The reason they are doin it so gently, would be that once the rumor sites have softened all the die-hard haters they could make it - just *bam* purple, would scare people away.

They've done multiple articles on Purple (two, as far as I know, where one is a Rosewarter-esque forum nightmare).

They main deterrent, apart from scaring old players, is the card backs. People keep bringing them up.
See the newest Ask Wizards: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=mtgcom/askwizards/0207

"He correctly identified the problem that if you give cards different backs then you could tell what card you were about to draw. Imagine playing a card game where each suit had its own back -– totally ridiculous."

But what if they just changed them? Made a generic cardback the didn't show colors or something, and just used that from then on. It would cause
some confusion in the beginning and, by todays rules, would count as "marked". Who makes the rules? They can just say, "you may play with these two cardbacks as you see fit". Caution to the wind. Smile

I can certainly see the issues with tournament play and cutting a deck, but that's easily solveable by either demanding a decent mix of cards with different backs (most likely in the basic land section, since all backs would have basic lands) or by forcing sleeves.

    Oh well, we'll see soon.

He is right. Conspiracy overwrites all existing creature types, thus making Endrek's thrulls into knights (and only knights). It does not do anything to Endrek Sahr's ability, which still would point to Thrulls and therefore never trigger.

A lot of people seem to think that FS will feature things from Lorwyn, but I doubt that. It's more likely that it'll have things from the next block/set that takes place in dominaria, which could be the next after Lorwyn or even after that.

On the Magi, from Devin Low's IRC interview, we learned that the Magic have the EXACT text that the original things had - if that trend is followed, which it likely is, then it should be relatively easy to deduce that it should be Magi of Enchantments or Magi of Creatures. IF they don't throw us a curveball, and do something completely different.

    *edit*
Well, it could actually be an Magi of the Aura cycle. Something like:

    Rancoring Magus G
GT: Target creature gets, "when this creature is put into a graveyard from play, return it to its owner's hand", +2/+0 and trample until end of turn.

    or it could be:
    Rancoring Magus G
GT: Target creature gets +2/+0 and trample until end of turn. Whenever that creature is put into a graveyard this turn, return ~ to it's owner's hand.

suspend is useless on that spell when will you ever see an opponent playing a creature spell during your upkeep?

As for my variation on this how about a simple:

    still birth
    1B
    Instant
Destroy the next non-black creature that comes into play this turn

I like the idea of this, but it's just too conditional. You have to know that a creature will come into play that turn, and the opponnent will probably just wait a turn to play his creature (granted the time it buys could be good).

One could imagine something like yours, that just didn't have "this turn" in it. It would set up a delayed trigger that couldn't be naturalized before working. The memory issues would probably be to prevalent, and they'll probably just end up doing:

    Stillbirth
    1B
    Enchantment
Whenever a creature comes into play, sacrifice ~. If you do, destroy that creature.

It get's around targeting issues (take that SSS). Alternately, it could say "Whenever a creature comes into play under an opponent's control, (...)".

People keep comparing it to Seal of Doom, but the important difference is that Stillbirth would only work on the next creature, where the Seal can wait longer (being activated, instead of triggered), avoiding a "chump-creature".

How do you know it's not a Timeshifted White Knight from White to Red?

Heh, I made the same mistake on the first take. It's a timeshifted Black Knight because it has Protection from White. ;-)

Considering that Blue usually get the -x/-0 spells, a blue humble sort of makes sense.

    Cardtags, please.
    fist of suns

As for the question, off the bat I would say "no", but I'm not sure.

    Edit:
    CompRules says:
409.1b If the spell or ability is modal (uses the phrase “Choose one —” or “[specified player] chooses one —”), the player announces the mode choice. If the player wishes to splice any cards onto the spell, he or she reveals those cards in his or her hand. If the spell or ability has a variable mana cost (indicated by {X}) or some other variable cost, the player announces the value of that variable at this time. If the spell or ability has alternative, additional, or other special costs (such as buyback, kicker, or convoke costs), the player announces his or her intentions to pay any or all of those costs (see rule 409.1f). You can’t apply two alternative methods of playing or two alternative costs to a single spell or ability. Previously made choices (such as choosing to play a spell with flashback from his or her graveyard or choosing to play a creature with morph face down) may restrict the player’s options when making these choices.

409.1f The player determines the total cost of the spell or ability. Usually this is just the mana cost (for spells) or activation cost (for abilities). Some cards list additional or alternative costs in their text, and some effects may increase or reduce the cost to pay. Costs may include paying mana, tapping permanents, sacrificing permanents, discarding cards, and so on. The total cost is the mana cost, activation cost, or alternative cost, plus all cost increases and minus all cost reductions. Once the total cost is determined, it becomes “locked in.” If effects would change the total cost after this time, they have no effect.
    ---

So yeah, that would actually work, as I see it.

    ---
Edit2: Ok, so it won't work. I'm contradicting myself all over the place. Smile

It is, however, possible to attempt to counter a spell that cannot be countered, to gain life. Ie. oponnent plays an Oblitarate, then you can play Overrule targeting the oblitarate - eventhough it will not be countered, you would still gain life.

Sutured Sliver seems pretty cool, but as worded it would be put into a graveyard as soon as it CIP.

It should probably be something along the lines of "As ~ CIP, remove (...)"

    @Kami.inu
That wouldn't work, would it? Ghostflame Sliver sees to that. Actually, as Megazord is worded, it would be impossible to play it, if a Ghostflame Slive is in play, as all slivers would be colorless. If it was worded with the normal Gating, it would be a CIP ability, and then you could play it with Ghostflame Sliver and keep everything in play.

    @SorcererTime
The trouble with the "One purple per constructed deck"-rule, is that people will be able to use the old versions as well (as far as we know), and in those cases the rule wouldn't apply - it's not errata, the old versions won't become "bonus-rarity" all off a sudden. At least, I hope they won't.

I, for one, am completely jazzed about Time Spiral and am going to attend four (count 'em) different prereleases - saturday and sunday this weekend, and next weekend - to snatch up as many cards as possible. I can't wait to open a booster with Avatar of Woe AND Stronghold Overseer.. mmmm..
