Yeah, it could definitely use some prettying up. I'll probably try to think of a better way to organize it later. Top 10 is pretty restrictive, though, so probably not that. Maybe top 10 creatures, top 10 spells, and top 10 non-creature permanents or something.

Sanctum seeker is a lot better than that - he's more like a 6/4 since he hits all opponents, and ofc he triggers with any other vamps you have which could be solid even if you just have one or two. Though I agree he's questionable.

I think he meant top 10 for each color set.

Jhoira is an instant combo general. Like any combo general you can build it another way but you gotta convince people first that that is what you're doing

Every time I play Kurkesh. I HAVE infinite combos, but my policy is if I'm playing "casual" that I won't search up any infinite combo pieces.

Understandable, but a reactive ability is not always of the opponents doing. If her ability was passive as you state, it would resemble and function as a static ability like Linvala, Keeper of Silence.

Such as if Jhoria 2.0 had a static ability that stated: "Each historic card you own or control has 'Draw a card when you cast this card.'"

I would classify Linvala as "static", but Jhoira as "passive", but we're getting waaay off topic now. I think my problem with calling it "reactive" is that the ability isn't particularly active - it just sort of happens whenever you cast Historic spells; it doesn't require you to pay any cost or give you any choices to make.

Of course, we're discussing word choice now instead of the card, so I'm gonna drop it.

It's not that she's bad, she's just not the r/u artificer I was looking for
I think that this edit is a far more true statement, since you really should avoid speaking for the majority (though I'm just as guilty of doing that from time to time).

There's nothing wrong with being disappointed with Jhoira, and I would love to see a UR artifact-centered legend with a more complicated ability someday soon, too. Variety is the spice of life and all that. But since there was no universal call for a specific ability that the UR artifact commander should have, no matter what they printed she wouldn't have been the "artificer that most people were looking for". And to be honest, if she had the Mirrorworks text stapled onto her, people would be disappointed that she was just Mirrorworks on a stick just like I'm slightly disappointed that Jodah is just Fist of Suns on a stick.

At least she expands on Vedalken Archmage's ability by including legends and sagas and has a slightly more significant body. And free card advantage from your Commander is something that should never be underestimated.

"On a stick" means "on a permanent." So Mirrorworks and Fist of Suns are already sticks, lol.

Making every single permanent spell in your deck replace itself if you build around her is a significant ability that you probably shouldn't handwave. In normal Commander, you need to limit the number of inexpensive creatures you run because they simply don't have the strength-to-card cost ratio to be worthwhile, but Jhoira completely negates that - all artifacts and legends suddenly lose the opportunity cost associated with card advantage.

Nin doesn't really cost less since you need to spend at least 1UURR and 1 turn before you'll get anything out of her - sure the initial cost is pretty low, but once you actually use her you're either spending a lot of mana (and often a creature) every turn or not getting as much card draw as Jhoira would be giving for free. (Don't get me wrong - Nin's amazing, possibly even better than Jhoira, but comparing the two is apples to oranges)

Tbh, Breya does nothing for me. Her abilities are nicely flexible, but they're inherently card disadvantage without using mass token creators or whatnot. The fact that a lot of decks seem to use her either as a combo piece or primarily for her colors just doesn't appeal to me at all. Which is unfortunate because I love the art and would probably buy a second, non-foil copy of her if one was printed even if I don't know that I'd ever use it.

I'm not going to say that you need to love Jhoira, but I think that running her at the head of either Eggs Storm or Ravager Affinity is reasonable as she can significantly improve the number of cards you see on any given turn without costing any extra mana. If those sorts of archetypes aren't your jam or aren't competitive in your meta, fine, but they are things that can exist that gain a lot of value from her.

If I was going to build storm, I'd just add black and run Kess, Dissident Mage, because she doesn't require me to build around her at all whereas I lose a color and have to run a higher artifact count with Jhoira (she's also harder to disrupt). Jhoira is neither exciting nor filling any role we don't have filled already. There's better artificers and there's better storm commanders. I guess if you want a nice tier 2-2.5 casual deck, she'll be a good (if uninspired) choice.

She is filling the role of U/R artifacts matter, which we've never had before.

On a positive note, she does allow for making builds where you've been wanting to try artifacts or planeswalker where you might want a home.

I really love the transform into lands cards, so it's nice to have a commander where I feel justified in playing them with nothing but upside with able to draw. Got Azor's Gateway, Treasure Map, Thaumatic Compass, Search for Azcanta, Vance's Blasting Cannons, Storm the Vault. Red/Blue has very few land ramp options, so it's nice to get extra lands into play.

I'm really excited to run Storm the Vault.

I almost wish she'd had like a Welder or Master Transmuter ability.

Perhaps. I just wish Breya had been more...interesting, I guess. It seems hard to make her fun and good without massive combos, where Daretti and Kurkesh just synergize very well, and then get you to infinite status eventually. I think that Jhoira will be, for me, just a casual deck. Very simple, but also reasonably powerful. I'll use her to play with newer players I think, who aren't as prepared for infinite combos or complex strategies.

I guess that's another point is that since she's simple, it's really easy to build a deck around her, so she'd be a good choice for newer players.

So Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain was spoiled. Artifacts are my favorite things in the whole game. Darksteel is my favorite set ever, and Mirrodin, Scars of Mirrodin, and Kaladesh are my favorite blocks ever. I'm obsessed a bit. But anyway, I've been wanting a UR artifacts-matter type Legend for a long time, especially since Saheeli Rai came out. Breya, Etherium Shaper was boring to me, and so were all the options for Partners. I like a commander that adds real tech to the deck. Daretti, Scrap Savant and Kurkesh, Onakke Ancient are two of my favorite Commanders ever. Now, personally, I think new Jhoira is also kinda of boring, because all she does is draw cards. But, I also think she seems pretty powerful drawing cards so easy, and she rewards you for playing planeswalkers and cards like Padeem, Consul of Innovation. So I'm kind of excited for her! What do you guys think?

Good card for Alesha, Who Smiles at Death.

Good, but not great, since its ability trigger on attack, so it won't trigger the turn you recur it with Alesha.

You also want some enablers besides Roon. The two best are Deadeye Navigator and Eldrazi Displacer. After those two, you'll want to look at Mistmeadow Witch and Conjuror's Closet. The Witch is Handy because it can target creatures you don't control, so you can exile pesky creatures your opponents controls until end of turn, or protect one that is helping you more than your opponents. You should also consider creatures that blink, like Felidar Guardian and Restoration Angel. Those may only give you a single blink trigger, but of course it doubles with Panharmonicon, making it that much easier to abuse or even go infinite. The Guardian is even better than untapping a permanent, too, because it works on any permanent, including your opponents, so it has a lot more potential. And throw in a Gilded Lotus too. It goes infinite with Deadeye, and either an untapping dude, or Felidar. Lastly, I would include one dude that returns a permanent to your hand, as a final protection and to reuse something like the aforementioned World Breaker.

EDIT: Don't forget one of the best cards Bant colors gives you: Wargate. I LOVE that card so much. It's amazing. Sometimes, it's 3 mana for any land in your deck. Sometimes, it goes and gets your biggest, baddest permanent. It's so awesome.

  • posted a message on Glorious Reprisal - Red graveyard exile
Glorious Reprisal would be more fair if it said instant and sorcery cards, but then it's basically just a (generally) better form of PiF. However, something that might be more flavorful but still different, is if it was 3R to cast, and said something like, "Exile all cards from your graveyard. Until end of turn, you may cast red cards exiled this way." That makes it distinctly different from PiF, but still fair.

Here's my idea: maybe make it a 1/2 flyer for 1UB, or even just UB, and only cast cards Delve'd by him. That way, he's only really useful once he's been cast from your command zone one or twice already.

Or: you can cast nonland cards you own that you've exiled this turn using Delve abilities.

She has some stops political power in multiplayer. "Oh you just played [any legendary Eldrazi, or any other major threat], and no one has a board wipe? Let's keep you off that until someone does." Especially if you can defend yourself from it, then you can turn to your other opponents and say, "I'll keep that threat busy, if you so [thing] for me."

  • posted a message on Can you use a spell in response to someone selecting it with a discard ability?
    Quote from HR_19 »
No, because when it is selected the effect is already resolving, and you cannot interrupt a resolving ability or spell, except with mana abilities or morph (since they don't use the stack).

Almost, Morph is a special action but you still need priority to turn face up. So you can't interrupt abilities with it.

Oh cool. That makes more sense.
