  • posted a message on speculating purchase of booster box of Eternal Masters
    Hi,

I am considering purchasing a booster box of Enteral Masters and sitting on it for a few years to resell it later. Just purely a speculative investment.
I know the prices of a lot of the big name cards released in the set have fallen since its release (Karakas, Mana Crypt, Force of Will etc...)
I guess my questions is does any one think there is a chance for a rebound in prices?
This is assuming that there will not be another Eternal Masters for quite some time.

I think I read in the last downtime blog update that the four pack sealed payout was changing. I don't remember the old payout so can anyone confirm this and if so what was the old payout vs the new. Thanks in advance.

Allow me quote myself from the previous page:

    A Little Tidbit
The seer looked confidaent with his dark inspiration. After all, no pain no gain.

Clearly the dark and confidaent are a reference to Dark Confidant. The inspiration could mean that this card was inspired by Dark Confidant. The no pain no gain indicates a card like Dark Confidant.

The weird spelling of confidaent makes me think that aether will be in the card name somewhere? Anyone else agree?

I could see something like a Heroic based tutor:

Some multicolor blue/black creature with heroic tutor for any card lose life equal to that cards casting cost. Probably grossly overpowered...

or maybe some like Heroic - Scry 1, draw a card loss life equal to its converted casting cost.

MTGO had very good payouts and cheaper event fees when it launched ten years ago. In fact they were too good, but they needed some way to attract users to play. Fast forward to today where the event values have decreased dramatically but I feel MTGO generates a profit for itself.

I would like to know if some of these of other online TCGs currently make a profit?

One of the strengths to MTGO is also a weakness that these other games don't have and that is the tie-in to a paper based game. The fact that the price for a digital booster is the same as a physical booster is a hindrance in my opinion. I think Wizards does this to preserve their paper based sales but if they really wanted to see MTGO grow all they would have to do is drop their prices.

You do realize that would mean buying packs from the store at 3.99 a pack to get random cards, that you then have to hope someone else wants and has what you want. No thanks.

Well I primarily play limited so I am cracking packs anyways and keeping the spoils of victory or defeat so it doesn't bother me all that much, but I do see your point.

I just think there should be a marketplace section for bots and a trading post section for people who want to trade cards for cards. That would make me happy. They could do the fractional tix and make even more players happy. So be it. Wouldn't affect me one way or the other.

    Quote from mtgnomad
Ugh, no. Not only do I have to find a bot/player with the cards I want, but they have to want the cards that I have as well? Sounds like a pain in the... I love trading in real life, but online it just sounds painful.

If people want a separate trading room, great, but there's no reason not to have a better marketplace.

I don't see it as any more painful than in real life. You can already post your haves and wants. I don't really see the difference. Its probably less painful if anything because you have a greater number of collections you can quickly scan or peruse online while in real life you have to ask person after person "hey you got card X or Y?" or flip through page after page of binders.

I don't have the various posts at hand, but iirc the main reason is that tickets were never intended to be used as a currency and only as tournament entry options.

Also, since bots use the same client you do, there'd be no way to automatically filter them away from a "no bots" page.

If that is the real reason then there is a glaringly obvious flaw with it. If you don't want something as currency then you make it an untradeable object such as war marks or cube tix. Its as easy as that, so I call BS on that reason.

To be honest (and I will probably get a lot of flak for saying this) I would prefer a trade system that doesn't use tix where its only just cards for cards much like it would be in real life. This is what trading is: cards for cards. You can say exchanging a card for money is a "trade" but it really is a sale. Like try "trading" your physical cards for money in a brick and mortar store in front of the owner and you will get thrown out real quick.

If they had a section for all bots these could be like the stores buying and selling cards. And if they made a section for players trading this could be for humans really trading and not selling.

Am I the only one that doesn't like the ~Skylasher because it feels too much like power creep?

First we had Grizzly Bears at 1G.
Then we had Ashcoat Bear and Spinneret Sliver at 1G.
Now we have a 2/2 bear with flash, reach and Pro. Blue. at 1G.

I now consider any thing less than this, Melira, Sylvok Outcast, or Scavenging Ooze obsolete. I guess the fact the those are all rares and Grizzly or Ashcoat Bear are common is supposed to make up for the difference but it just feels wrong to me.

I picked Rakdos. Sylesnia is my second choice. Simic was just a train wreck for me in GTC and I think most people would agree and avoid it.

  • posted a message on Why does glaring spotlight go so late?
My experience with the card is that I always seemed to have it in my opening hand and felt like it was a mulligan. Generally it is a dead card unless you get to the late game (turns 7+) but this format is very fast so that many games are already won/loss/decided by the late game.
It is being drafted late because there are so many more playable cards than this. Please feel free to disagree with me but I feel like Biomass Mutation is a similar card with qualities/value like Glaring Spotlight. Early on feels like a mulligan/dead draw and only good when you have like 7+ lands in play.

  • posted a message on [[GTC]] DailyMTG Previews 1/16: Thespian's Stage & Slaughterhorn
Thespian's Stage - A land that copies other lands and grants the copying ability.

Pack Rat - A creature that makes copies of itself and has the make copies of itself ability.

Just speculation I suppose but could we see an enchanment with similar copying properties? Or Artifacts? Although Mizzium Transreliquat may already count for the artifacts.
I know they are different in that the land copies another target while the pack rat only makes copies of itself, but it is kind of like a copying subtheme.
How fitting and interesting it is that Mizzium Transreliquat was printed in Guildpact.

Edit: Just realized this should probably be posted in speculation.

  • posted a message on Guildpack Dimir guild the reason for elimination of 4 pack sealed?
Looking at the Guildpact spoiler so far it is looking more and more like the Dimir guild may have had some say in why the 4 pack sealed events disappeared. I am not saying it is the only reason but it looks like you could open some pretty busted pools. Even more busted then the AVR mill decks that I had or played against.
Now I may not be the best a limited card evaluation and you may disagree with me but I would love to hear your opinions on my opinion.
Do you agree: Yes? No? Maybe?

Maro stated that he never claimed that they would work well together just that you could put them in the same deck and play them together. So basically the only thing we're promised is that the new guild mechanics wont clash with the old mechanics. Since the old Dimir mechanic involved tutoring the new mechanic can be pretty much anything besides Mindlock Orb effects.

If that is indeed what Maro stated than that is the most worthless statement ever to make. That's like saying I can put islands and swamps and play them together. wow. I can play any magic card together.

    EDIT:
I just dug up the texted quoted from Maro:

"Because Izzet was spell-centric, we tried like last time to make sure there were a number of other cards that liked being in a deck of instants and sorceries. Our goal was to make sure that if you took all the cards with the watermark of a guild from both Ravnica and Return to Ravnica blocks, the cards would play well together. These instant and sorcery enablers help hold Izzet together."

Granted he is talking about Izzet and the guilds as a whole in this quote but I think there is a difference between put them in the same deck and play them together and "the cards would play well together."

Does the fact that it was stated that of the new guildmechanics would work with the old ones still hold true in Gatecrash? So if Dimir's keyword from RAV was Transmute would the damage + mill keyword be considered working well together?

#s 1, 2, 3, in my opinion work very well together. The last two kind of don't make sense at least not as obvious as the first three..

    1. Populate + Convoke
    2. Scavenge + Dredge
    3. Unleash + Hellbent
    4. Overload + Replicate
    5. Detain + Forecast

    Transmute + ????? (Damage + mill)

I guess in a sense transmute searches your own library while the damage plus mill eats at your opponents library so there is a connection there (both deal with library) but it is very lose in my opinion. Detain and forcast don't hold anything really in common.

  • posted a message on How are booster pack's contents generated?
Yes, I understand that the contents get generated when you open the pack, but I guess the $64,000 question is what is the algorithim for generating a packs contents? The only ones that know are the developers for MTGO.

In paper magic you used to be able to see specific print runs with commons and uncommons in packs and pro players would memorize the those runs for draft. Heck people used to map boxes to know which packs had certain rares in them.

Do MTGO packs parallel paper packs in a set's print run? My guess is no.

  • posted a message on How are booster pack's contents generated?
I am not sure how to word my question/issue and perhaps no one knows the answer but Wizards themsselves. So here we go. Tonight I just did a TPF Swiss nix-tix draft and low and behold in my Future Sight pack I open a Tarmogoyf (happy dance). Ok so I go 2-1 and win two more packs.

Now I just opened a Goyf during the draft and I want to open more (as everyone wants to do). But how likely (or unlikely) are the drafts that immeadiatly started after mine likely to contain Goyf? What I mean is opening a Goyf is like a 1/60 chance or something like that, but that is around eight or so drafts before another one gets opened (in theory).

But then I hear reports of two Tarmogoyfs in the same draft so I guess there is no sequencing in online packs? Is it compeletly random? Like I can crack two boosters back-to-back before any drafts or other boosters get opened by anyone else and get the same exact rare in both packs.

And I am not factoring in foil rares because I know those kind of skew things a bit. Sorry for my long-winded post and any insight shed on this would be most appreciated.
