I would only really bother picking up singles from Theros rather than buying sealed product. Save the sealed product opening (if you are someone who likes to do this) for Kahns.
It's hard to say what cards you should look out for come rotation because frankly no one knows definitively what will be good and this is like the worst site to get that advice.
Can anyone help me out with figuring out how much land to run based on avg cmc of a deck?
Didn't the responses 6+ years ago do a sufficient job with answering your question?
If you have read them, you know that they only address how to determine the breakdown of lands between colors, and they don't discuss how to determine the # of lands in the deck.
Obviously, if you have more expensive spells, you might want to run more land, but I was wondering if anyone has specific methods they use, or if there are curves that show the ideal relationship between avg cmc and # of lands in a deck.
I acutally think Mono Green Devotion would be a really good deck to start investing in. The cards in it include some of what will probably be format staples for at least a few months after rotation in the form of Courser of Kruphix, Sylvan Caryatid, Elvish Mystic, Polukranos, World Eater, and Voyaging Satyr/Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx. The only real cards in that deck that are going to rotate is Garruk, Caller of Beasts, and you can probably get a few on the cheap and just run it with maybe more beaters like Arbor Colossus. You could also run the Eidolon of Blossoms package and maybe splash black for some gods or something, kind of like Gerry Thompsons list that he ran at the invitational.
I used to play alot of MTG awhile back--mostly type I and some type II about 5-10 years ago.
I'm thinking about picking it up again, but not sure what is the best place to start. I see that M2015 is coming out soon, and a google search shows me that the following is currently in standard:
