A New and Exciting Beginning

The End of an Era

Out of the new core set Alpine Moon has me pretty excited. It seems like a nice sideboard option for us but I have some concerns about it and was wondering what other people thought.

Pro: One mana solution to scapeshift, tron and any other pesky man lands That doesn't hurt our lands.

Con: it slows down tron, doesn't stop it.

I think this card is more meant for the smaller aggro based zoo not the more midrange zoo deck. The one mana helps with the surge cost of Reckless bushwhacker. The card for big zoo as I said above just slows down Tron and actually gives Tron an out to cast their Natures Claims to stop the hate. Am I missing a step of logic with this argument?

Zulander, I agree with your assessment of Voice. For a long time I felt like voice was subpar. Whenever I talk to control players and think back on the matchup Voice doesn't have a very visible impact but it does change the control player's play style to play at sorcery speed which limits the impact of counters and also the body after verdict/wrath really helps with our rebuild ability.

However I do see Lugger's point. Some U/W/x decks have a lot of planeswalkers and are already going at sorcery speed so voice is just a 2/2. That is a case you just side them out. I still think you keep voice main. It just fights sooo many decks.

Also side-note had a great game against infect with voice on the battlefield. Was doing what you are suppose to do, and killing the creatures during my turn to minimize the impact of their pump spells and kept getting those elemental tokens and bashing face. Never had such a great time against infect.

I was toying with the idea of running some combination of the new cycle of triple mana costed Dominaria cards; Benalish Marshal, Goblin Chainwhirler and Steel Leaf Champion. They seem very good and I know people jumped to the green one but the mono red and white ones seem more like what our deck would like to do. Either pump the team with an anthem effect or sweep away tokens. The triple red seems like the hardest to hard cast but the triple white seems reasonable with a deck running nobles but the dream is cascading into these targets or even move back to a coco list. I won't be able to test any lists for another two weeks sadly so wondering if anyone has had luck with the cycle?

I feel like the shell you want with Zoo is pretty set with:

    22 lands- 10 fetches, 5-6 shocks 3-4 basics and 3 utlity lands
    14 One drops: 4 bolt 4 Nacatl 4 Nobles 2 path
    10 Two drops: 4 goyf 2 voice 2 ooze 2 helix
    6 Three drops: 4 KoR 2 smiter
    4 Bloodbraids
    4 flex slots

This seems to be the general mold people build around. Basically four flex slots to make the deck your own.

Good mention on the Aven Mindcensor can be flashed in to dodge anger and other removal while not sacrificing our mana base. Also seems a like a better card against a lot more matchups. I only get out to play modern once a month pretty much so I'm in the same boat DiscardThisCard, I've only played the matchup a couple of times. But building a sideboard for a blind meta it seems like going 2-3 spheres with 2-3 Mindcensors seems like a good call.

With Damping Sphere, I really don't see the reason to go back to Blood Moon. The thing is that Blood Moon in Naya Zoo is not as free as in many other decks. We also get heavily taxed by it, therefore it is only good when it shuts down our opponents game 100%.

I agree completely with this idea, but Lugger comment about scapeshift is very true. I feel without blood moon the matchup requires us to curve out perfectly and for them to stumble. If people have another plan that doesn't involve blood moon I am game.

I have been wondering about the dampening sphere vs blood moon sideboard slot. I get that dampening sphere helps in two ways, taxing spells on turn two and fights Tron lands and Eldrazi temple a turn before "natural" tron is assembled. My main issue is that blood moon can fight valakut and mana greedy decks where sphere can't, increasing the value of moon in the sideboard. On the other side taxing storm and control decks is nice but it doesn't apply any pressure. Running Thalia or Teeg are just better options I think against storm and control decks. Keeping the pressure on and slowing down their hand is the best path to victory for zoo decks. I know it can be meta dependent but just running blind into a meta I feel like running moon, Thalia or Teeg are a better choice. Trying to get a read from other zoo players on sphere's role in the sideboard and what people have noticed?

Why has Greater Gargadon been slowly ticking up? Only deck I know of that it sees play in his restore balance deck but thought that deck was at best fringe.

Voice is great but $60 great... must be a buy out or some one is expecting all the ex twin players to go more control/tempo route.

I would very much agree that it seems more of a midrange card so a jund or junk deck seems like the best bet. Junk would seem the best bet to play with Gideon or Elspeth and the oath is card selection and a way to cast walkers.

might be better in a naya prowess deck... If such a thing exists.

has anyone started testing with Oath? It seems sweet but seems more of a midrange card and collected or Domri would be better in a zoo like deck.

How does the Naya charm fair? It seems like an odd pick. Is it just a way to clear the way?

I was wondering if I could make a request for a Gifts Ungiven? Huge fan of all the work everyone has done on this forum.
